I call dibs on buying the one in the front left when you get her trained to shake those tail feathers and talk shameless and trashy on command...she's going to be a "Cindy Crawford caliber" hottie hen when she hits puberty! Looks like my Avian X is going on the swap thread.

Reminds me. I was mowing my orange grove a couple days ago and disturbed a hen and her chicks. I pulled out of the area and watched her calling her chicks to her. But, she was acting very weird, running back and forth for twenty yards or so raising all types of cain. I figure she was mad at me, but then she flew up toward a tree on the edge of my groove and tried to "spur" a hawk sitting there that I had not seen. Pretty cool. I just hope she got the kiddies all back together.

We hatched some wild turkey eggs that the nest had been destroyed when I was a kid. We put them under a chicken to incubate them... haha

But when they hatched, they were wild as all get out!!! no taming them. They eventually died. I would have never thought they would have been wild like that. Go figure...

Now's the time to put your ghillie suit on around them.... :)

One spring while gathering maple sap i saw a hen turkey get Up and slink off, sure enough she had a nest with 8 eggs. I stole a couple and boiled them for breakfast next day. They tasted bland,.i prefer chicken eggs. Sandy

Wow Mike is that all of them. That's so incredible. Whats the plan to let them loose again and how soon to be sure they can handle it.

From: David McLendon
Date: 23-Apr-18

The less they see of you the better, after about a week get you about a half a tube of Crickets and drop a few in at a time, they'll catch on pretty quick.

From: 4nolz@work
Date: 23-Apr-18

They are noisy.

I'm not sure of the final plan.Ive never had them live past 2-3 months old.

We raised one from the only egg left in a damaged nest. They imprint on you immediately. We couldn't get 3 feet from him when he was a chick, they want to stay right under your feet. Then he progressed to sitting on shoulders and heads. By 7 years of age he was a mean aggressive gobbler - willing to prove how he was in charge. He lived 9 long years.

From: Babysaph Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member
Date: 23-Apr-18

That is neat. We would get arrested for that in Wv

From: 4nolz@work
Date: 23-Apr-18

Yes I expect the gobblers just like bottle raised bucks can be really dangerous. Its a quandry.

From: hvac tech
Date: 23-Apr-18

Red oak is right they are very aggressive when they become full grown the gobblers . i had a neighbor that raised one and till he was 4 years old he had to butcher him he just was to nasty to be around you could not turn your back on him he would try to spur you peck at your legs then in the spring like now he was just not safe to handle .

That looks like fun! I found a nest in my yard and watched. Hen got run off and killed. I wanted to hatch them and called game and fish. I was told they would arrest me if I proceeded. Common sense???? Wish I would have just gone ahead and did the right thing.

That's a famous book by Naturalist Joe Hutto called "Illumination in the Flatwoods" the hardcover is hard to find and $$ but a paperback version has been released by turkey icon Tom Kelly on his website.

Dude that’s awesome

From: TrapperKayak
Date: 27-Apr-18

Nice! I bet they can already fly. I've seen partridge chicks fly barely a day or two old, and baby turkeys like that fly. Looks like they are getting wing feathers already.

From: 4nolz@work
Date: 27-Apr-18

Ive always heard if wild chicks dont get caught by something by 5-6 days old that they can roost in bushes/scrub

That's cool. Keep the updates coming. Jim

From: David McLendon
Date: 05-May-18

They are not going to calm down a whole lot, turkey chicks are hot. hey are going to need more space pretty quickly.

From: David McLendon
Date: 05-May-18

Your going to need an outside pen with hardware cloth 24" up from the ground, They will do a lot of stupid things with chicken wire, it's ok above 24" though. Depending upon your game plan whether or not you'll need a roof. Where I live Coyotes and Hawks would find them pretty fast.

From: 4nolz@work
Date: 05-May-18

Yep

From: RymanCat
Date: 05-May-18

Very cool all I have only wanted was one Tom as a pet and you get the raise all these. Beyond cool. Keep showing us pictures Mike though please. I'm sure we all would like to keep checking them out too.

From: 4nolz@work
Date: 05-May-18

None of these will be pets.Im not sure what the plan is but wildlife rehabilitation fails if the animals are kept captive.Theyve imprinted on people which was unavoidable. Usually these type projects fail in the long-term.

From: BATMAN Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 05-May-18

Hope that this project will turn out OK. BLESSED BE! BATMAN

From: David McLendon
Date: 05-May-18

They'll make it around your place if you supplement them, and if nothing eats them. They won't be tame and can't make it totally on their own, but they won't be wild either as you know. The mature Toms sure as Hell won't be friendly so having one as a pet is pretty much out of the question. It's what you get into, they are caught between two worlds and don't fit into either.

From: Iwander

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

That's really cool. Too bad about the momma. It's interesting to see the light color variations in the early poults. That will be a bittersweet separation when you let them go.

So much for raising a rafter of comfort animals!

They call if veal for baby calves, what do they call it for baby turkeys?
