Oh yeah that's a good solid character knot. This is gonna be the riser. Limbs are gonna be maple with maybe a Osage core, topped with green glass back and belly. It's gonna be a great shooter and looker. JF
I bet you are Barber. LOL ANY bow Jeff builds looks amazing, but the truth is they shoot even better. I think the last few bows have been Osage (bo'dark) cored???
Jeff......nice wood! I love making risers out of chunks most guys would burn. I have a few new risers you'll like........I'll take some photos and post them later today. Richard
I love working Bacote. That sure will be an interesting piece. I just cut a piece of walnut to go in a riser that most people wouldn’t use it for that, I will put a beam in the bow to alleviate the stress. Looking forward to see how you deal with that knot.
This knot, being in Bacote. I have no worries with it. It doesn't even go through to the other side. I'm hoping that it is a little bit open when I get the riser shaped. So I can fill it with some turquoise powder :-) JF
Was wandering what was going on, now I see. Beauty in the making. :) You best be careful posting such amazing craft, or Iowa' Superior Sticks is going to be a real deal.
Doing a little dry run and marking,so I know where I want to start tapeing it down, before I inflate the hose. This makes everything go better when covered in smooth on. JF
I don't believe I have ever seen a "kit" with such perfect fit or long tapers, or PERFECT woods. This one should really be something when it comes out of the bakery..
I'm chomping at the bit to get out and check for mushrooms, maybe tomorrow. The weather has finally gotten just right now we're month behind for rainfall and temperature. Now back to the bow, limb tips and overlays today. This piece should make a sweet accent to the riser.
Small update today. I had to go and check on the mushrooms, nothing :-( The grip overlay is shaped. Next blend sand into the glass surface and on to the Tip overlays. JF
A little progress. Sanded the epoxy sealer with 320-400 grit. I gave it three more coats to make sure it will be glass smooth. It's looking great :-) JF
Barber and I did a trade with him last year. He's having issues now too. So I traded him the Maqokita Revenge bow and built Joey this green glass Longbow. I remembered he said he likes green glass bows :-)
Mountain Man , that beautiful bow is mine : ) Jeff is a heck of a guy and makes Awesome bows ! I can’t wait to get my hands on this bow and sling some arrows through it .
Are you sure that bow does not need to make a detour through Texas? You know.. Quality assurance and all. Strictly looking out for your best interest. :D It would match my new fly rod reel nice...... Jeff that bow looks amazing. All funning aside congrats to the both of you. What's the future for the Maqokita Revenge bow?
Scott, I know leather wraps feel good in hand but ya just can’t cover up these awesome risers Jeff does ! Wait till y’all see the cool string he made for the bow. This thing just keeps getting better and better
I know Jeffro is the Jackson Pillock of longbow ; )
As long as i know whats under the leather thats all that counts! I told Jeff last bow he made for me,,"Think of it as squeeze'n a nice rack in a leather bra"
Scott, I normally agree with you, or at least mostly agree with you. HOWEVER, you can't cover up something as nice as Jeff's riser. Maybe you have a problem with wood... :D If the other bow is waiting on a grandchild, then I have no further questions. Barber, whenever you get that stick you have to get a little blood on it, and show it off.
And Scott, BTW- We had two hogs in the field directly behind my house last night (not far from the archery lane). We have never had them here before, but that only means I don't even have to get in my truck to find one.
Dry Bones, It will definitely get some blood on it before the year is out :). I have only shot a time or two in the last couple of months because of some shoulder problems. Needing a bow of lighter draw weight to really began shooting again. Shoulder should be back to normal again says doc but will be a while. So Jeff is taking care of me on this build. I use to keep a lower poundage bow around and for some reason a couple years ago I decided if it wasn’t my hunting weight of 50- 65lb I thought I didn’t need it. I have killed a few deer with the 40lb bow I use to own. This bow Jeff is building me will be my main bow . It is around 42lb at my draw. Still have some heavier bows around 50lb if ever need them but have sold everything else I have over 50. Keeping bows 40-50lb. No need in anything more. Hopefully shoulder will last longer. Sometimes our profession is rough on our joints. He wanted the other bow back for his grandson. It is one awesome bow ! I killed 2 deer and a coyote with it .
Barber I have yet to bag a yote with the longbow, but it's darn sure on the short list. Congrats to you and hope the shoulder really heals up like it is supposed to. I currently have a 68#'er that I think should go to a new home. I shoot it just fine, but IF I get carried away with shot count then my collar bone feels it the next day. Old woulds seem to never fully go away.
Dry bones, I know about old injury. That’s part of my shoulder problems. I did karate and mixed martial arts for about 20 years. Some things come back to bite you later in life . Lol
I've had big hammers in my paws/sausages and tend to hit the wrong nail time and again. Also have a tendency to get my paws caught between a rock and a hard place...literally. John
