New format for 2018 IBO Traditional World Championship, Pipestem, WV, July 20-22, 2018 The IBO mission is to offer a true world class competitive event that also promotes fellowship of family and friends.

Beginning this year we will offer four shoot times to complete 30 IBO World championship targets. Shoot times will be 8:00 AM and 11:00am Friday and Saturday….shotgun start!

“Everyone" (except Cubs and Eagles) shoots final 30 targets Sunday, 8:00AM shotgun start. Awards immediately following. There are two, thirty target ranges ….A & B. Classes shot on course A – REC, RU, TH, FREC, FRU, STRAD Classes on course B – MLB, SLB, SB, LB, FLB, YU Cubs & Eagles will shoot with their guardians on either course.

Also new this year: Archers may shoot 2 classes, (a class on each range), but may only choose one class/one bow to compete in on Sunday. Bowhunter Challenge format stays the same. In addition to the "Trad Tech Sadie Hawkins" Team Event, and the 3Rivers Showcase Shootdown event, we are excited to present a new event the "Last Man Standing".

In order to preserve the integrity of the sport of traditional archery, the IBO is continually striving to enhance their tournament format. We look forward to a fantastic event this year in West Virginia. Questions contact: [email protected]

Good stuff! I'm glad to see them making changes to create an event better event. Kudos to the IBO!

From: Tal McNeill
Date: 20-Apr-18

I rally like the idea of being able to shoot two classes. Wish I could make it this year.

From: Bownana
Date: 20-Apr-18

The peer grouping does not change. On Sunday, archers will continued to be peered as before: 1-5, 6-10, 11-15, etc...for the championship day. The invite for all to shoot on Sunday adds to the IBO Championship experience for all archers, and promotes more archers participating and shooting their bows. Archers will be able to come for the weekend and stay until the award show. In addition, all of the IBO courses, and rounds are shot in "like" peer groups, with "like" bows...you will be grouped by an IBO official to shoot any of the IBO courses, hence the shotgun shoot times of 8am and 11am. The Bowhunter Challenge range is for socializing, friends, family, etc. and you may group yourselves.

We will be there!

From: Mo0se
Date: 20-Apr-18

I'll be there...my 5th year I think. The only fly in the ointment I see is no mention of a separate championship "Sunday" only course. We gonna shoot the same course twice? At Twin Oaks there were 3 courses A, B, and C for obvious reasons. I'll miss seing Pappy at the Trad Worlds this year.

From: Barebow52
Date: 21-Apr-18

Looking forward to this location

From: Bownana
Date: 23-Apr-18

Hi Moose. IBO officials will not allow archers to shoot the same course twice without changing the range, like having another course, or possibly moving the stakes. At Twin Oaks, only white stake shooters shot course C, and the orange stakes were always moved for the final day on a previously shot course. For the championship courses at Pipestem, the IBO will not let you reshoot a course, it will be different, and probably more difficult, lol. Thanks for the question. New venue, new format, new questions. Looking forward to July!

From: Demmer

Some nice changes. Hopefully it all works out to make another fantastic IBO Tradtional Worlds. Looking forward to seeing everyone there. Now, what classes to shoot ??????.

From: Wild Bill
Date: 27-Apr-18

I find it interesting that in seven days this thread has only ten posters.

Then again, the frequent railing against "aiming, scoring and competition".....well to me it speaks loudly about where most traditional shooters feel comfortable discussing their chosen sport.

I can see why IBO doesn't run qualifiers to participate in a "World" event.

From: M.P.
Date: 27-Apr-18

Its a great shoot to see how you do against the best shooters and also to have fun .The only pressure is the pressure you put on yourself . I look forward to seeing this event ay Pipestem this year

From: DanaC
Date: 28-Apr-18

Too many shooters afraid of 25 yards, to ay nothing of 30...

From: Big Dog
Date: 28-Apr-18

You can say what you want about the term "World" but IMO the IBO goes to great lengths for the traditional shooter ie. all the different classes and such. I for one enjoy what they do and appreciate it. The wife and I have made a tradition out of going every year and like the competition and the friends we've made. In addition, I think the reason there aren't a lot of posters on this thread is there is already another (same title). In my life experience, the percent of people who shoot for fun vs. the people who shoot to compete break down about the same across traditional and compound ranks. Regards

From: M.P.
Date: 28-Apr-18

There is not a club that puts on this shoot at Pipestem State park. I think this is larry Cade and the Ibo.I am sure several volunteers will be helping.

From: THarris
Date: 28-Apr-18

Well, all I know is that when the IBO Traditional World Championship first came to Twin Oaks, I attended not knowing what to expect. I didn't know if I'd find snobbish traditional competitors or what.

I couldn't have been more mistaken. I met and shot with some top competitors while shooting on the Hunters Challenge range. HAD A BLAST!!! They may be serious competitors but they love to have fun like any other Traditional shooter.

In my opinion, the IBO is a great organization that truly knows how to put on a great World Championship event, not to mention, super organized. TOP NOTCH!!!

" IBO does not come to their own shoots like ASA with 25 member ASA paid workforce with equipment. "

No, but they do bring a great crowd in. We hosted an IBO shoot last summer, doing again this year. Between shooter fees and kitchen profits it was about break-even the first year (We had toi buy some new targets.) This year we'll get well into the profit zone.

Work? Yeah, but the trail work benefits the club in many ways, club members get their work requirement in, and it beats going to the gym ;-)

Did some preliminary trail planning yesterday, logging on the grounds will push us to make some changes, so we'll make it new and better.

With the 2 class quals this year, which 2 are you guys planning to shoot? I'm shooting longbow so tradhunter seems like the easy choice since I can just shoot my longbow and woodies as they qualify for TH too. But I'd really like to give RU a shot as well...Decisions, decisions...

Does anyone know if we can pre-register for our shooting times and if so how to go about it? I'd guess maybe you'd have to choose times and classes when you register and pay, I wont arrive until Thursday afternoon though. Just wondering, cant wait to see what Pipestem is like.

From: Wojo14
Date: 10-Jun-18

I plan on going and shooting in the RU(recurve unaided) class. Anyone know what the max distances are on the orange stakes? 35? 40? 50?

~Wojo

From: Jim Casto Jr
Date: 10-Jun-18

Orange stake is 30 yards.

From: Pappy 1952
Date: 10-Jun-18

Good luck with the World, we really enjoyed doing it as I know you will. You get to meet a lot of great people and yes from all over the world. The IBO is good to work with once you get to know them, we were use to using TwinOaks rules so that was a little different but the good thing is if you win the World you really won the world using the format that use. From: Witherstick

Sounds like it could be an enjoyable shoot. Unfortunately, it isn't one that we will likely every enjoy. My wife, now young adult children, and I have enjoyed shoots since the children were born. We went through the whole scoring phase and enjoyed some success. Along the way, it became a real family thing for us. It is more thsn just showing up together. We enjoy shooting together just as we enjoy hunting together.

Now don't get me wrong. We also enjoy meeting new people who also shoot stickbows. The idea of shooting a course individually is just lost family time in our minds and that happens enough in everyday life. Being limited to just the hunter challenge course is just not enough to justify the trip, although some of the hunter challenge courses that we have shot were decent.

As I mentioned on the Cloverdale thread, the really truly popular 3d shoots like ETAR, Compton, and the Tennessee Classic are either noncompetitive or cater to both. Yes, some might just be too intimidated to compete. But some just plain enjoy the atmosphere and shooting.

From: skunklady
Date: 10-Jun-18

Just to clarify to help you understand the difference in the two organizations: The IBO is a nonprofit organization with the sole purpose of protecting and promoting bowhunting. IBO uses archery events to help fund this mission, giving the host clubs the opportunity to enhance their revenue. The IBO puts back into the sport we love and is not a for profit business with a paid workforce.

From: skunklady
Date: 10-Jun-18

As Pappy said, "If you win the IBO Trad World, you really won the World." And more importantly if you didn't win the World, you walk away knowing you shot a legitimate event, with every effort made to retain the integrity of the sport. You only shoot the championship 30 targets one day with your peers, and the final day 30 targets with your peers. All other shooting can be with family, and friends, as there are many fun, competitive & novelty events, including the Bowhunter Challenge course to enjoy. If you want to come out and fellowship with others the IBO Trad World has a place for you. If you want to test your archery ability against the best shooters in the world, this event offers that as well.

I started the 2018 IBO Trad World Championship thread on Jan. 30th. This thread spells out Traditional. Check out the first thread for more info and a larger list of Leatherwallers planning to attend. I am Dave Moulder, aka Lost arrow, ( name given me by friends because I spend most of my shooting time looking for a lost arrow). I would really like to meet fellow Leatherwallers. I will be at the Christian Bowhunters of America set up part of the time. 73 year old, short, fat rather bazaar looking fellow. I live in Princeton and will be staying in the Park campground.

Yeah, I shot it several years ago. There was a massive thunder storm just before we were supposed to shoot. I was confident we were going to get struck by lightening.

I am focused on the 50m Target State Champs this coming Saturday, so I didn't want to go up there and not be able to shoot my barebow. After Saturday, all focus turns to IBO Trad Worlds.

My big challenges will be...

1. Making the 12hr drive up and 12hr drive back...alone.

2. Traversing uneven terrain for 30 targets two days in a row.

3. Making it back home with all the arrows I left with.

But I highly suspect I'm going to have a great time no matter what the outcome of anything! :)

From: M.P.

No problem Jinkster, you may be held a little longer at the traffic lights. I go into town a couple times a day and it just takes a little longer than usual. I see no need to change your plans.

Awards for the two class shooters. 90 target total score on the IBO courses shot. Lots of shooting to be had next week!

From: Bownana
Date: 13-Jul-18

The "Last Man Standing" is a new event compliments of the Traditional Bowhunters of California. It is great as any level shooter can participate and win prizes or cash. The host/MC will call a shot, if your arrow is in the called area, you move on, if not, you pay the pot to continue on in the game, say $5-$10, or whatever the host/MC calls. The host may call out of the ordinary arrow placement to win cash/prize etc. This will go on for some time, as archers will drop out, and soon it gets down to 2 or 3, maybe 5 archers, as the ante$$$ to continue, goes up. The winner will take all the money left in the pot, and other awards allotted. It is a big hit at Chamberlain shoot in California. So fun, the IBO wanted to have it at Trad Worlds.

A friendly note to Jimmy Blackmon:

Be advised that the use of Injun or Injun trophy is offensive to at least one Native American.

And I am not crazy about the trophy, either. I hope the tournament Committee will consider changing it next year.

Success to all participants!

I chose the native American trophy for the Last Man Standing event, as a display of superiority, valor, and honor. I knew this trophy would be given to the winner of the "Last Man Standing" event who was highly skilled in archery. I have always held native Americans as honorable and superior, and give them utmost reverence. I have tokens of beautiful native American feathers, dream catchers, and beading on my quiver as well. This was never meant to be at all offensive, and I hope whomever wins this will proudly display it.

Went there today to pick up a BLOB target. Weather was perfect while there, mid-60s and overcast. Arrived 0830. Left at noon. Several vendors there. Scores were posted, but I did not take too close of a look. I had a truck full of peeps and no room for bows, so we vendor shopped and came back home. Had no means to protect our bows from the predicted weather. It never did rain on us. Oh well.

Over the years, I’ve been to several Traditional Rendezvous’, local shoots, and state shoots. Since I semi-retired the last couple years I’ve taken in our states IBO circuit and the Traditional World shoot last summer in Clarksville, TN. I don’t shoot very well and most likely will never compete with anyone, but I do like to shoot and meet new folks.

I can honestly say this IBO Traditional World shoot at Pipestem was the most enjoyable archery related weekend I’ve experienced. I tip my hat to the IBO for a fabulous weekend, at a fabulous venue with PERFECT weather to boot and from my perspective, all the events went off like a well-oiled machine.

I couldn’t believe the weather; the forecast was for rain all day Saturday and Sunday. No rain at all Fri. and Sat. and it started to sprinkle today, but only as the last shooters were leaving the range. Temps were in the upper 60’s in the mornings and mid to upper 70’s during the day. I guess that's why they call it, "Almost Heaven, West Virginia."

Wojo,

Same place next year; I didn't camp, but the camping area was next to the registration and vendor area. Looked to me like there were several spots available so you wouldn't have had to reserve a place this year. Campground looked real nice to me.

This is the first year I can remember the Hunter challenge course being more difficult than the Championship course. I had a great time! Weather was perfect! I'm with Hedge Hunter, I've never seen an orange stake in front of a white stake before.

From: Mo0se
Date: 26-Jul-18

Lol I’m with ya they were trampled! I still had a great time! One thing I’d like to see discussed is moving the Championship rounds to Friday and Saturday. The long drive home on Sunday is brutal! My mental game was off the first 30, wish I’d had the same mental day I had on the Hunter Challenge course over the two Championship courses. Managing the mental game is the only way to be successful at these events.
