Has anyone got their hands on the new Samick Discovery R1 bow? Its a ILF bow that comes in 58, 60, and 62 inches. Has a very good price on them just wondering how fast they shoot and what dealers are going to be selling them.

It sounds like competition for the Titan and Satori. I think the riser sells for $239. Bow with wood and glass limbs $389.

The video review said it's machined from a solid block of T6 air craft aluminum. Black anodized finish. Is T6 good? Does it have a Trump tariff?

Comes in 3 colors, black , platinum , muddy water. 17" riser with black limbs. Limbs it says are ILF,carbon and wood. Sure would like to know what kind of speed these bows will produce. I guess Ill keep my eyes out for one and see what the reviews say about them before I get serious about one. The price is pretty good though. $389.00 and free shipping.

T6 same as 6061 according to internet. A lot of metal risers are machined from this stock. 7075 is harder but dulls cutter bits to fast according to an old timer I talked to at the metal shop. I have seen another low priced metal riser from China. It looked and felt nicely made, no rough edges, decent finish as well. How do they hold up? Really to early to tell need a couple more years to see if they can withstand as many arrows as some shoot.

I just received a black Discovery riser from Farmington. I wanted a set of their 50# limbs and a brown riser but it would have meant a three week wait. I like the heft of the riser so far and with a set of tradtech wood/glass limbs, I'm happy with the set up so far. I'd call the grip a medium wrist grip. I prefer a low wrist so I took the plastic grip off and now I like the riser even more. I can wrap that with tennis or hockey tape for a little cold weather insulation. I'm new to ILF bows but feel that most would be pleased with this riser, especially for the cost.

I never asked how fast a bow was before I bought it. Any normal recurve setup of a certain design will be within a few fps of others of the same design, so I look for that antiquated thing called shootability. The classified is full of fast bows that people didn't want to keep. Maybe find out if it fits well and shoots accurately in your hands.

Is anyone here shooting the Samick Discovery off the shelf?
I know it is set up for an elevated rest & plunger but if you are in Ontario, Canada and going to shoot Recurve 3D, the OAA Rule for that division is;
22.19.11.6 The arrow must be shot from the shelf or hand with no elevated rest. Only a piece of leather or similar material 1/8 inch thick or less is allowed on the arrow shelf

Mike there isn't a dimes worth of difference in the speed of any 2 bows of similar design and construction.
That being the case that bow will shoot as fast as any of them.

I would shoot the rest setup you shoot the best, regardless of what IBO rules say, unless you're intent on shooting in the class that disallows it.
Never understood such rules that won't allow a simple stick on rest on a 1959 recurve, but will allow lateral adjustment of a sight plate on modern target bows.

You're right, I did think of that but was erring on the side of caution, but the rules do not say anything about the side plate and it would not be like a plunger is being used so I can't see any room for complaints if a hard material or thick leather was used..
George D. Stout
I would too, except I want to shoot OAA Trad 3D
I don't agree with the rules and think they should be written to encourage more trad shooters, not eliminate various models of bow, but it is what we have and I need to work around them if I want to "play"

The rules for OAA for Traditional are like this:
The arrow must be shot from the shelf or hand with no elevated rest.
Only a piece of leather or similar material 1/8 inch thick or less is allowed on the arrow shelf.
That Bear weather rest is an elevated one, no matter how much you cut it.

I think I missed your point: You are using the part you cut as side plate. Yes, in this case you are right. But I can tell you from my experience shooting 3/16 cut past center bows, with normal diameter arrows the bear rug and side plate will put the arrow where is needed.

I've been shooting a Discovery with ILF LB limbs for awhile. I don't get to excited over ILF bows (metal handle) they're just a tool and that's what I like about them. Set them up like you want and your good to go. Here's a pic with Uukha recurve limbs on the riser. IMO, I think it's a good looking riser. I heard they going to release a dark green riser for 2019. I shot it of a leather rest, furniture pad rest and now have a Bear Weather Rest on it. No issues with any of them but I do get bullet holes with the Bear rest paper tuning.

I am liking this riser more and more. Every single ILF riser I really like or want has some huge flaw for me.
W&W Black Wolf (which I own) has no sight bushings for the bow quiver I prefer
Hoyt Satori 17" also has no sight bushings so they could squeeze in Fred Eichler's stupid signature on the bow
Elite Origin went proprietary limb fittings like idiots

It does have mounting holes for a quiver on the reverse side of the sight window. My only critisim of the riser is that the sight window is a little small which could be a factor for some shooting styles and if you want to use a plunger, I don't think it's cut deep enough. I couldn't use a NAP Center Rest. Both are non issues for me. It's been many years since I've used an elevated rest but I'm going to continue with the Weather Rest for the time being. Yesterday while tuning I was getting excellent arrow flight using Beman Classic Hunters 340's cut to 30 inches and a point weight of 145 gr. to 200 gr which will give me plenty of broadhead options.

Go to 3 Rivers archery and look at the support video for the R1. Mr. Karch shoots the bow off a machine with both sets of Samick limbs, with 8.4 gr arrows and 10.4 gr arrows for hunting. Shoots pretty fast. 50# wood core Samick limbs avg 194.6 with 8.4 gr arrows,183.3 with 10.4 gr. The foam core limbs avg 197.6 with 8.4gr and 182.5 with 10.4 grs. that is shot through crono with machine. With human hands that would be little different. But not whole lot of difference in limb efficiency. Should be a flat shooting bow. Price is pretty good too.

Got my Muddy Oak yesterday from Alternative Archery in England.$189.00 and only took 8 days for shipping. Everything arrived in fine condition. Used Pay Pal for buying . No problems. Set it up to shoot off shelf with 36# short limbs from Sabastian Flute $89.00. Got them from Lancaster along with rug rest which is 1/8 thick and used part of it for side plate. will start tuning today to see how it works out. Made my own B 55 flemish string at 58 think it is somewhere arround 46 at 58". Will try 500 at 29" see how they fly then 400 at 29" if the 500's dont do well. At some point may try flipper rest and button but for now just going to get used to shooting a ILF style bow. $278.00 for ILF bow not bad gives me some playing room. Will set up for hunting later on with another set of limbs or just cover these with camo tape.

Ludy, if the side plate on that bow is 1/8" thick and made out of soft material you decreased the dynamic arrow spine tolerance by 2 at least 2 full spine groups. Just something to keep in mind.
Also, just so you'll know there is nothing differnt about shooting an ILF bow than shooting any other kind of bow. You are likely going to enjoy it a lot.

I couldn't get mine to shoot quiet. I tried the Samick wood carbon and some wood glass limbs from Cartel. Brace height from 7 3/4 to 83/4. Perhaps I had unreasonable expectations from shooting longbows or I missed something. It sounded like a tuning fork at times. Sold it on the bay.

I don't normally add to these posts. I have a Samick discovery riser, and I love it. Mine is set up with a set of Tradtech wood/glass long limbs in 40#. I have the strike plate built out with 1/4" furniture pad. I shoot full length Beman CS 600's with 125gr points. I get perfect arrow flight with this set up. It was a little noisy, but a set of cat whiskers quieted it down well.

Will try the furniture pads. Seems to shoot GT trads 28in 600's the best with 125gr tips. Not as noisy as I expected but I think I can quiet it down a little more with limb tamers and pad the limbs with felt pading or wrap the string with wool. BH 7 3/4 but string is still streching and when it stops Ill see where it shoots the quietest. Its pretty fast and shoots good but not used to site picture yet. Only shot 55 arrows through it Saturday was suprised to get that many shot since having shoulder surgery last Feb. Wasn't very acccurate past 15 yds.

How many turns do you set the bow at on adjustment? I did 3 and then went 3 more full turns till both tillers were even at 8 in. Y tube said to shoot 3 under you had to have even tiller on limbs. I dont know that for sure though. It's fun to fool with though.

The buzz I discovered is the locking nuts not being tightened in the riser. Tighting them up will stop the rattling buzz sound, since it tightens up the limb bolts. FYI
