Not wanting to high jack another thread, I will start this one. Thanks to all who commented previously. Ok! Here we go! As you will see from the pictures, I need the grip reconfigured to fit me better. I've been reading the TBB, PA, and surfing the web for ideas. One I really liked was the idea of old braided fishing line for the grip. That idea came from TBB vol.1. Any suggestions for a rest and plate are also welcome. I have some ivory and either mother of pearl I was planning on using for a plate as well. The finish on the bow is string wax, I'd like to use something else that will deepen the color, but believe the wax should be removed first? The bow is black locust, picked up from a fellow LW'er who attended a James Rempp build along. Hopefully he'll chime in as well. All comments and suggestions welcome, thanks in advance to everyone who chimes in. Regards, Chad

Horn tips and some character

I started with some pencil lines to figure out where the bow fit best and the darkest line is where the shelf would go, btw, I'm a righty.

Being a righty is probably obvious. I'll get more pics of the bow strung and at anchor soon.

Just get yourself a 4 way rash and make the handle fit your hand. There is a curved and straight parts-rough and smooth. But easy does it on the wood removal.

I don't cut in shelves but I just used some leather pieces.

There is a handle covering build along on my site.

Thanks George, I was actually just checking out your site. It's on my home screen now. Great stuff, a buddy and I have been talking red oak board bow.

First off the string wax isn't a good choice, it wont do much at all and is probably about worn off already. I would gently sand it with 220 grit, wipe an even coat of Bullseye shellac on it as it will stick to anything, and then seal it with spray poly after your done adjusting the grip. Do you want to shape your grip or just cover it with something? Its a straight grip so you can stretch about anything you want around it and get a great fit.

If I have a handle that doesn't suit me I glue on wood pieces, they will be hidden under the leather and invisible.

In the picture I am gluing on a palm swell.

Thanks for the replies. Not planning on cutting in a shelf , but leather or wood for a rest for sure. Wax was what came on the bow, I'll sand it lightly then was hoping to apply tru oil once I get the grip figured out. The biggest issue I'm having is the lower section of the grip digging into my palm.

You see how the back of the grip appears slightly dished out making the top and bottom side rise up? Knock them down smooth so you cant feel any of it. It wont change the bows performance or function. But it will make your hand feel a lot better. I'm not seeing anywhere you would need a build up of cork. A wine cork works great for a rest. It will bend and conform to the side of your grip and adheres nicely with Loctite SG. Check out my osage billet RD build along for pics. It simple and very effective.
