I am working on a board bow.It is my 4th board bow.The others I made the top and bottom limbs the same length. On this one I have made the top limb 1" longer than the bottom. My question is do I tiller as if the limbs are the same length? Do I strive for an even tiller? Do I make the bottom limb stiffer? Just don't want to mess this one up.

You rest the bow where it will be held and you pull it back where you will be pulling it back. The arrow should come pretty much straight back like this so your tiller will look pretty even.

Like Badger said, hold it where your bow hand will, and pull it from where your string hand will. The nock point should come straight back, or straight down if it's on a rope and pulley type tillering tree. A vertical line drawn on the wall behind the bow that indicates perfect fulcrum or nock travel is a good reference. If the nock point drifts to one side of the line, it is drifting toward the stronger limb. Weaken it until it pulls straight. Keep doing this as you progress with your tillering. When you're done tillering and it's balanced and pulling straight at full draw, let it go back to brace height, and THEN measure your tiller.

The tiller will be whatever it ends up as... a 'result' not a reference. In other words, it should be a result of your efforts to balance the strength of the limbs at full draw relative to your fulcrums, not an ambiguous measurement at brace height that you decide on ahead of time.

Yes, even tiller. But when you draw the bow try to sense the handle pressure. Make sure it is even. Jawge

Thank you gentlemen, I just added another great piece of advise to my repertoire.

I'm going to drag out the plumb bob and make my line on my tillering device.

Wow Jeff. That’s an ah ha moment for me. That makes a lot of sense. I have never made a bow other than finishing a blank, but I’ve read many books and follow threads here. Your statement just tied a bunch of stuff together for me.

Throw away the building books, that was the best tillering advice ever.

Yep.....Jeff Durnell convinced me of that a year or a little more ago. Makes a world of difference in your finished bow.

And, it works the same way on glass bows as well.
