As a bowhunter I've always felt your first shot of the day is the most important. There has been a lot of discussion lately on "hunting accuracy"..."top level archers"
ect... this was my first 3 shots this morning.
shot 21 arrows most of them were in the cardboard, the rest were either touching or on the very outer edge. 3x6".
I'll settle for that as good enough to hunt, but I still strive to improve.

My thoughts are that anytime someone post a group they should include how far they shot from and bow specs.
Nice shooting shade mt

sorry..i was about two steps in front of my 20 yd mark, so probably 17 or 18 yds which is probably 75% of my hunting shots, or maybe even slightly less.
The bow was a 55# T/D recurve, I draw 28" the arrows were 30" carbon 175 gr tip, 5" parabolic.

SM, good shooting. It's nice to know how far and what weight for bow but it really doesn't matter. There are days I can't miss at 30yr + and days I can't hit worth a hill of beans at 10yr or less.
As long as you had/have fun that's why I shoot.

. Well trapper I'd like to tell ya I did that every single time, but I'd be lying.
I can however keep them reasonably close, but this morning was just an exceptionally good morning.
Tomorrow they might be 4" apart.

Hunters, who are pretty good shots to start with, seem to have that second level of concentration when the time comes to take game. I know I do for sure. The outcome of a shot on a deer is a big deal and all that training with the field courses, or 3D, stumping, etc., will pay off when that time presents itself. When I'm hunting, I don't ever expect not to shoot well. I think most here are like that.

George, your comment reminds me of what I was told by a member of the MN Archers Hall of Fame. We were getting out of the car to shoot a 3d match and I made some comment about hoping I had a good day.
His response was that when he went to shoot a match, any match, he got out of the car with every expectation of winning the match. Said he wouldn't bother unpacking his gear if he thought otherwise. And yeah, he almost always did.

I guess for me, my first shot of the day is always at a target no matter if I go hunting, or not. Before I go to my stand in the morning, I set up a target outside my garage and shoot 20 +- arrows. If I'm going for an evening hunt, it's my main target plus stumping on the way in.

I find I generally shoot better also if I have taken a few "warm-up" shots, whether it be at a bag target in my yard before I hunt my property or at a few stumps on my hike in if I'm hunting the mountains on public grounds. Like said above, my "first shots" are rarely at game.

The first shot, can be very difficult and very elemental, as in do we eat today or not, or Ready Or Not, Here I Come.
