I use cedars with glue on tips. I am about to buy a half dozen various sized foam 3D targets to create a course through my woods. Over the years I have shot up and repaired many a foam 3D deer target with field points and short periods of broadhead shooting for testing or around the beginning of hunting season. On occasion I have shot them with Zwickey Judo tips, but don't find them all that kind to the target material. The targets are a substantial investment, and as this will be a course in fields and woods the chance of losing arrows will go way up (and that isn't cheap either).

Can anyone give me a creative idea as to how to use glue on field tips with some adapter so as minimize target injury and arrow loss?

Thanks

There is none, unfortunately. There are some targets with replaceable kill zone. Buy those to cut the loses.

Theres no happy medium in your situation but I might suggest hanging carpet remnants behind your targets to cut down on loss and stick with field tips.

Shooting any foam target with anything other than a field point will tear them up prematurely and ruin them. Put your target where there is a clean area behind it or a backstop to prevent loss and use the judos for stump shooting.

Field points are the only way to go. Good advice already provided re grooming the area to make it easier to find arrows that miss.

On the other hand, if you frequently miss entire targets, you might consider shooting at closer ranges.

No Judo points on foam and no blunts either. That should be obvious after a shot or two. If you want to shoot other than field points, make some 2D cardboard deer targets.

Any point is hard on foam targets. If I recall IBO does not allow the bullet type point like target archers use cause it’s almost a blunt. Our club repaired the 3D’s we had on our members range. We also didn’t waste time with small targets, except the Baboon, we hated it. You might also consider putting the targets in the shade. We found the McKennize targets deteriorated in the sun. We would also rotate the targets when we saw the kill on one side start to get shot out. Another way to keep arrows from skipping when you miss is some hale bales placed about 5 yards behind target. Or dirt burms. 3D’s an’it cheap, they require maintenance, also some thought on how to use them without shooting out the centers right away. Yes, I used to moan and groan when I saw our targets being abused, course I was club treasure and wrote the checks. It was nothing to spend $10K on targets and replacement parts each year.

Target points. Only thing better is toe points. lol

Pile of sand behind the target works well. An arrow rake also helps along with the brightest fletching and wraps or cresting paint to ease finding the arrows.

Screw on Slick Tips. Yeah I know you said glue on but had to point out the best.

I'll second the bullet tips being harder on 3d targets than others.I belive the saunder combo tip may be the easiest on my deer target but they are screw in dont know if they make glue on in that style?

Thanks all for the thoughts and comments. Some grooming behind the targets, and some placement in front of mounds does seem like good ideas. Maybe even a pile of older wood logs to help. The point about the shape of the field tip is a new one on me..I will take a look at that too

Combo field points seem to cause the least damage.>>>----> Ken

I know that the topic is the front of the arrow but I find the back may help in finding the arrow. I shoot a pink wrap with pink and purple fetch. This makes the arrow stand out in just about anything. I take a little razzin but loose few arrows.

Unfortunately, we only focus on a teacup sized area on our 3-D targets. It doesn't take long to shoot it out, making the target useless.

I do shoot for the kill zone for hunting practice but will also pick a spot on the neck or rump for general shooting. Since doing this, my targets are lasting for years in stead of weeks.

I can't say my bullet points have caused more damage than field points. The bullets don't drive in as deep. I totally switched to bullets a few years ago and my targets may have surface wear but the deep piercing damage has been minimized. Plus, bullets are easier to pull from trees. :)
