For those of you who hunt, what are you using for a quiver? I’ve looked at a few and want to see if there are any other options. I would like a bow mounted, because I don’t plan on sitting in a stand often.

I don’t want anything that bolts on to my bow. It needs to be slide on or with a strap. I’ve seen selway, great northern, and the older bear guiders.

I like the idea of the slide on, but I don’t like the idea of spending 100+ on one. Are there other slide on manufacturers out there? Pictures always welcome.

I have a couple of strap-on Thunderhorn Bow quivers that I use. They are economical and work well for me. One is a 4 arrow leather hooded model, and the other is a black plastic hooded 6 (I think) arrow quiver.

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 14-Feb-18

Even the 'used to be cheap' plastic slide on quivers are in the $70.00 range. I have an older spring arm Bear that I use for a bow quiver. I do use others though from back quivers to an asbell style that I made from a Delta bow quiver. Never can have too many.

I’m not so sure a back quiver or hip quiver would work for me in the elk woods. Gets pretty thick and nasty! Plus, I’m always carrying a pack with me while hunting, so bow mounted would be the best for me. I’ll be watching those classifieds like a hawk

I have a Skookum single arrow bow quiver on my bow, and then I have a Catquiver Mini slung over my shoulder for the rest. I don't like shooting a bow with a bunch of arrows on it so with the single I have the primary arrow on the bow but it's not there when I shoot it.

I leave that single arrow quiver on there all year so I;m used to shooting with it.

From: Mike E

I'm looking to get myself a strap on quiver from Big Jim, probably next week. Never held one and don't know anyone that uses one, but the price is right and his reputation for quality is solid. Watched his video and it appears to be what I'm looking for. Just have to decide on the size and color. I use back quivers and plains style, Looking to make myself a side quiver with a cut out sometime this month. As George stated, you can't have too many.

I'm coming back to traditional archery after about five years, shoulder issues. The last time I had troubles with a bow quiver attached to my bow. It just didn't work for me. So this time I wanted to go with the clean longbow. I tried the Lakota quiver but that style just didn't work for me.

And then I found the Powderhorn Stalking Quiver. It's made by Art Vincent of Cedar Ridge leather. It holds six arrows, and he makes one that is 4 arrows. I went ahead and got the bigger one because it was only $20 difference. It also has a broadhead file built into the quiver. It can be a side quiver, a back quiver, it can hanging on a tree. Or hang in you're blind. It's just a really versatile quiver. Each one is handmade.

I haven't got the email yet as to when he shipping. That's probably because I added a cruiser Side quiver, for target shooting also. And then he's doing some artwork on them. But boy was he reasonable. He's making them and doing artwork on it for the same price it will cost me for good quality leather. I'll put photos on when I get them.

I have a big jim strap on and great northern adjustable strap on. I like how light the big jim quiver is but I LOVE how stable the great northern is on my bow. I would tip my hat to the great northern.

I have both the Thunderhorn Boa and the bolt on, in both 4 and 6 arrow. I really like them. The Boa’s are really secure and quiet. You can go to Thunderhorn’s web site and find them under $100.00.

I made my on version of a sidekick Quiver out of a side mount black widow.I like it because I can let hang to the side or grab it and pull it front of me or push it up my back.I don't like bow mounted quivers.its just a bino strap on it works for me...

From: PEARL DRUMS

I've tried and own all you mentioned. Hard to beat the GN for a solid, quiet mount. And they are the most durable when it comes to hood design and foam. You can find them used on here for much less than the $110 they cost new.

I have always liked a bow quiver. I'm too fat for a back quiver and Side quivers get hung up too much in the woods. Recently, I picked up a '72 Bear Grizzly with no quiver bushings. Wanting not to drill holes in the bow, I looked at strap on and slide on's. Big Jims was the least expensive and he had a Christmas special with no shipping so I ordered one of his. I really like it. It is 2 halves, top and bottom. Each straps onto the bow and when you fill it with arrows, you can take it all off in one piece. There are several options in size, color, and logo. I highly suggest looking into it. There are youtube videos on mounting the quiver and its variants.

Started in '69 using an Bear back quiver and never looked back. My John Schulz heavy latigo has been with me since 1977....still using it today. 90% of the time it's the back quiver, rainy or snow days, I use the Catquiver 3.5

"Not sitting in a Stand" to me is a bigger argument for not using a Bow Quiver. I disliked adding weight and bulk to my bow that was going to be in my hand all day.

SafariTuff is a good all around solution for me. Fletches covered, easy to carry, easy to find different points, easy to pack mount if you want to, durable, quiet..... Made and sold by nice people.

From: SdDiamondArcher
Date: 17-Feb-18

I guess some people didn’t care to read my original post. Back or hip quivers won’t work for me. I am already carrying a 3000 cu in pack on my back and a bugle tube. Running up and down mountains chasing after bugling elk, I need something mounted to the bow.

Sounds like I need to take a good look at the Big Jim quiver

From: Bushytail Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 17-Feb-18

One bad thing about a slide-on is, if you want to take the quiver off for shooting, you have to take the string off and pull the arrows out to slide the quiver off. Strap-on you don't. Easy to do, Strap on, strap off.

From: JustSomeDude
Date: 17-Feb-18

I did....5 or 6 arrows mounted on your bow with exposed fletchings is just more likely to get caught up in brush. And do you really need all of your arrows right there while hiking? That's why I quit using bow quiver (thick briar/ tennessee woods). I was having to crawl up hillsides and slide my bow through crevices.

The SafariTuff will clip right to the side of your pack and you can unclip it and use it as a side quiver for stalking if you want to.

You might look into a single arrow quiver,.

From: fdp
Date: 17-Feb-18

Sd...there is a myriad list of quivers that will work in conjunction with a pack. Folks been doing it for years, Not saying you have to, but the options are there.

There are several versions of the Cat Quiver available that will allow you to carry as much gear as you are likely to need during the course of a day, or over night.

There are numerous tube type quivers that can be attached to any descent pack on your draw arm side that allow you to retieve arrows from the bottom of the quiver.

A standard Cat Quiver can be easily adapted to attach to a pack.

I'm with some of the other guys, not a real fan of bow quivers when hunting on the ground, regardless of the terrain. And the more gnarly it is, the less I like them. No protection for the fletching from thick brush, or weather. Fletching is out in the open where it flags every time you move the bow. And the thicker the country, the more you have to move the bow.

For just stump shooting or small game hunting I like a back quiver.

For serious hunting where I have to go through thick brush or crawl on my belly only a bow quiver will do.

Just depends on your needs and the terrain you are in

Another vote for big jims quiver. Very affordable. Invest in one of his accessory brackets that allows a ton of adjustability and can help balancing the bow

From: ga bowhunter
Date: 17-Feb-18

Great northern adjustable strap on is the best bow quiver ever made IMO will not move period once on bow the only downside is they are not the most user friendly because of the way you load the arrows

From: StikBow
Date: 17-Feb-18

Side quiver. Homemade with knife and file pockets sewn in. When carrying broadheads i add more foam in the pocket and a rubber arrow spreader to keep the arrow held tightly. Small game-the spreader and foam are removed. Unlike others, i encased a 3 inch wide aluminum piece in leather. This is stitched on the top of the quiver and allows me to put arrows back without threading them thru the ‘eye’ most side quivers have. It can be strapped to a pack or easily moved around as you stalk even in thick sage. I have back, bow, hip, pocket and side quivers, but use the side quiver gets used the most. It can carry over a dozen small game arrows or a half dozen broadheads

I know it's not what your looking for but hasn't let me down in 20 years figured I'd share. Its a kwickee kwiver for still hunting stalking I wrap my belt around it for a hip quiver of course there's the bow bracket & I have a bracket with a lag for screwing into trees. One quiver 3 applications very versatile

I use 3,4,and 6 arrow Kwikee Kwivers, 4,and 8 arrow Bear single spring arm quivers, and two hip quivers. The one hip quiver is a Kwikee Kwiver bracket mounted to a piece of leather with a belt slot cut in it. With this set up I can remove the kwikee kwiver easily if I want.

Sorry I mounted a Bear Hug quiver bracket on the leather so I could use my Bear Hug quiver. But you can do the same thing with a kwikee kwiver.

Traditions Leathercraft out of Oklahoma makes a very nice and light strap on hunting quiver. Only holds up to three arrows and only two blade broad heads, I think. Perfect for a light longbow, and the gentleman was a pleasure to do business with.

From: Longcruise

I use this type of quiver. Make these myself for friends, family and me.

Very rarely am I hunting without a day pack on so this keeps the quiver off the bow and easily slung and unslung.

for an actual bow mounted quiver I found the great Northern bout the most functional but just can't get along with a bow mounted quiver

and run with a back quiver most of the time

This Saxton Pope style is very handy when having something on your back (stand, pack, pack seat)

I've tried Great Northern, Selway, Eagles Flight, Kwicky, HH style back quiver, & Safari Tuff side quiver. Out of all of them Big Jims strap on works best for me. Easy on & off-quiet-easily adjustable-& doesn't seem to make my bow "out of balance"

From: Gifford
Date: 27-Oct-19

Many years ago, I used a back quiver, looking back, why did I carry all those arrows; but then most folks did. Later I tried a quiki quiver but didn't like the broadheads being exposed but it did work for blunts and field points.

Fast forward to the 1990"s I made a plains type quiver, based on the one shown in Jim Hamm's book, Native American Bows, Arrows, and quivers. Later on made a hip quiver that held 4-5 arrows, great for roving and shoots. At MoJAM in the early 2000's I got a yucca quiver from Sal that makes a great show-off quiver for shoots. I'm thinking of making wone out pvc and birch bark, either over the shoulder or the back.

Like others have said use what is comfortable for you for the type of hunting or shooting you will be doing at that time. It may take more than one type depending on your particular situation.

I resisted bolt on quivers for years, for no good reason. All strap on or slide ons would wiggle and eventually move. I bought a Bear TD, they have the quiver inserts installed. It’s the only way to go , all my bows will have quiver inserts from now on. I bought inserts and installed them in my Widow.
