How many of you out there hunt with traditional gear, or do you just like to shoot at targets?

Myself, I own several recurves, but I don’t actually shoot any of them, yet. I’m still getting all set up.

I do hunt with a compound right now.

Kyle, I haven't hunted for several years because of heart disease. My cardiologist has gotten me stabilized at the moment and I just recently finished a backed Hickory Bow that shoots wicked. I plan on reducing the hog population in Florida this summer and fill up a freezer and if I get too much then I will donate it to a local food bank.

I don't neccessarily call my equipment trad, it is what I like and it is all wood, my bow and arrows were cut from a tree.

It is going to be fun getting back into it......Thanks for the post, Ron

All I have it trad gear, I hunt and shoot 3’s with all but two of my bows. Those two are wall hangers.

From: ShadeHaven
Date: 21-Jan-18

I hunt and target shoot. I hunt as much as I can with a bow. Sometimes taking it for small game or even groundhogs. 3d shoots are a blast as you'll see from most guys posts on here come summer time.

From: Bowlim

I've been hunting for 40 years with trad gear, but at a very low intensity rate. For a long time I was very busy in a big city; then I was pretty banged up; and generally I don't have access.

I am considering going over to rifle hunting. The big difference with rifle hunting is you can make things happen. You will read these two stories about a guy stalking some animal, and the difference in the rifle story is it took an afternoon, and the bow story took a month of trying. Based on their expectations both events can be difficult to pull off. The main difference is time. Sooner or later if you stick at it you get close, but I don't have land access to spend a month patterning and stand setting, or a year. It's just an idea I have. I probably won't switch.

I actually own a huntable property, but I can't hunt it due to residency regulations. That has slowed me down also, in part because of the work I do on it. And in part because I keep figuring some day I will go there and get to hunt it, so it is kinda an excuse. I need to get my stuff together...

I left compound shooting 4-5 years ago, shoot recurves and longbows now. Hunt everything from elk to squirrels. I shoot 3- d's to indoor spots. You don't have to impress anybody but yourself, just as long as you're having fun.

From: Sipsey River

I hunted for years, but recently have lost interest in killing. I shoot my bow almost daily and shoot as many 3d events as I can get to.

From: Babbling Bob Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Haven't been for a while either but would like to I'll Get-R-Done next fall if I can. Have a great short bow on the rack. Hoping anyway.

Know there's lots of turkey around the corner on that back road to town 'cause when my wife's driving, she keeps dusting them off. Bet there's two with shorter tail feathers.

From: Longcruise
Date: 21-Jan-18

I'm a hunter and have bow hunted for over 60 years. I have owned two compound bows and enjoyed shooting them but they were too complicated for me in the hunting woods.

I don't shoot 3D and haven't shot any organized events in many years. Nor am I a bow purist. I hunt with ML guns and modern guns too.

From: Woods Walker
Date: 21-Jan-18

I hunt as well as target shoot with just recurves and that has been the case now for about 15 years. I still have 2 compounds but they haven't been out of the case in at least a decade.

From: soap creek

Been bowhunting for 37yrs. Always used Trad gear. Nothing against compounds just not my thing. Shoot as often as I can. Go to a few 3ds every year seldom keep score, just shoot for fun. I don't need a score card to know if I'm doing good or not. Like shooting with friends and making new ones. Don't hunt as hard as I did when I was younger. The kill is not as important either. Still enjoy being in the woods trying to out smart some critters.

Hunt and target traditional only. 51 years old and I've never shot a deer with a firearm. My wife had to kill one with her car one year (accidentally) because my preference of hunting:)

I've been a hunter since 1958..legally. Prior to that I was too young to get a license. ) At 72 the killing side of it has waned considerably though I still bowhunt. Only hunted five years with the compound 76 to 80. I started with recurves in 1964 and still shoot them, but have no qualms about using an old compound if I need to. I have a 78 Jennings Super T and a same year +/- Martin Cougar Mag. Love watching arrows fly and love shooting field archery...also since the 1960's.

Hunting isn't a religion to me though, but is just something I always did.

From: 2blade

been hunting with a bow since I was 15. gave up the compound in 2000. now I have about 30 recurves and longbows. I make bamboo backed longbows myself now and took my 1st deer with one this year. I go to denton hill and Baltimore every year. they are a lot of fun. luckily I hunt public land that's bow only. so I never have to deal with gun hunters. I plan on hunting, making and shooting bows for as long as I can.

I try to hunt but, where I live, the hunting just isn't very good. Well, I guess it's good for the folks who own good land but that isn't me.

Yesterday, the weather finally warmed up a little so I spent a couple of hours walking around state hunting land looking for rabbits...no rabbits here.

Hunter wannabe here. But I have grown to love traditional archery in all of its facets. I shoot target , 3D at a club, and want to get out of the city rove/stumpshoot. I don't have much opportunity Nowadays to hunt t's very expensive to get a lease Here in TX. But it's all good . Archery in and of itself is tremendously addictive And rewarding to me personally. Spend some time and really learn to shoot. You will agree.

Hunting doesn't make you special, it just means you hunt. Been doing that for sixty years with nothing left to prove. Archery is about shooting arrows year round at whatever you like to shoot at, including animal, foam, paper or stumps. What you hunt with is only a choice, nothing more nothing less.

I am not very successful but I hunt some every fall. This past fall, due to work, it was only 3 days with rifle. I hunt deer some, moose some, but my focus these days, because of seasons and tag availability is elk. I have been a hunter for 50 years.

I only hunt with longbows. If you are rating one over the other for justifying the use for hunting, there are many variables that come into play. since i did not shoot at him, I was a buck watcher this year, I could not get myself to shoot any other deer. I took it out on the small game instead, still am, them waskily wabbits, I am very thankful for the January thaw, but small game is done best when one has a few more options on what is and what is not a shooting possibility.

I've been shooting and hunting with recurves or longbows for 48 years ( since 1969 ). I did miss a few hunting seasons when I was stationed overseas with the U.S. Army. Shot competition from 1988 to 2002. I shoot every day either in my yard or basement. I never owned a compound. Been building my own wood arrows for over 20 years. Love building my own arrows, and hunting or just shooting my recurve bows. I use to own and shoot a bunch of different brand bows both production and customs. For the last 20 years have been shooting Bear bows only. I've hunted whitetail deer, muledeer, elk, wild hogs, turkeys, black bear, and small game. There are a few other animals I'd like to hunt before I get to old. Moose is number one on my list. :)

From: casekiska

I have been bowhunting legally since 1957 when I turned 12 years of age. Took my first deer in 1964 with a Bear Kodiak Magnum bow and have taken many since with other recurves, a longbow, and compounds. To me the type of vertical bow one uses does not matter. I get irritated however when someone uses a crossbow and then calls it bowhunting.

Ben I am also 67, never lost the burn in the belly, doubt I ever will,,,,, had heart surgery last October, bust my ass every day in the gym and in the pool, I just want to hunt for as long as I can,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, of course that mean't no more beef or pork or beer,,, ha ha

I'm 71, been huntin' and fishin' since I was about 7 or 8 yrs old. Still in pretty good shape, thank the Lord! Made my 1st bow at 8, and killed a cottontail, (willow limb and sharpened stik) hooked since then! Shoot recurves, longbows, compounds, cap and ball and centerfire, enjoy and shoot them all! All my practice is geared toward huntin', although I do shoot some at 3D shoots, mostly stiks w/ woodies, w/ my archery club. I do love backyard practice just as much. Have recently been building selfies, and really love doing that! Very satisfying and just overall fun! Will be huntin' w/ the "snakey osage" this year, 1st hunt w/ a selfie! Can't wait! From 1980-92 I shot longbows only and went to a lot of longbow shoots from Michigan to South Dakota but now usually only make 2 shoots a year our clubs trad shoot and the Coon Rapids, MN shoot. I like venison so shoot mainly does, sometimes big bucks. Over the years I've found yearly bucks to be the stupidist deer in the woods so I stick with does.

I hunt with trad gear...only targets I shoot are in back yard or with friends every now and then...but I do not compete.

I used to do a fair bit of 3D shooting but when it got too competitive for scores...I stopped keeping score and would just go through and mark a KILL- +5, a WOUND- -5, and a MISS- 0 points. Some places did not like that being done...not sure why.

keep em sharp,
