I met him in the 1970's at Bowhunter's Warehouse in Wellsville, Pa. He was there with his wife and talking with folks and signing his book "In Pursuit of Trophy Whitetails". I had bought the book and stopped to have him sign it and talk for a bit. He was very humble about his hunting feats and that impressed me.

Some years ago Roger spoke at a West Virginia Bowhunters event and then took questions. A young fellow there didn't have any idea who Roger was and asked, "Mr. Rothhaar, what kind of broadheads do you use?" Roger was so very kind and didn't act at all like the guy had asked a stupid question, but kindly explained he used those of his own making. We are losing some good ones too soon.

Roger came from the generation of bowhunters that gave back more than they took from the sport. He was a frequent guest speaker at state bowhunting organizations. He only asked that his travel/lodging expenses be paid. Never held out his hand asking for a speaker's fee. He contributed articles to the Professional Bowhunters Society's quarterly magazine because he supported our organization and what we did/stood for. He served as an officer in several organizations. Roger was quite active in the promotion and protection of bowhunting, especially in his earlier years. Thank you Roger for all that you did.

He went to his garage and came back with half a bucket of snuffer and put them into my car. He said, "Finish school!" then he smiled and winked. I still have a few of them.

It is truly amazing how many lives Roger touched..Count me in as one of them. I learned about Roger through his articles and then his books which i cherish and re-read to this day. I consider myself a pretty darn good woodsman and bowhunter, but Roger was in a league of his own. I learned so much from his writings and later on over the past 15 years i had the pleasure of speaking to him periodically on the phone. We would sometimes trade whitetail harvest photos via US Mail. Not only was he a brilliant deer hunter, he was a great person. We talked for hours each time we connected. I would ask a question and he would have the answer. He was passionate about family, archery and bow hunting. I called him 10 days before he passed. I feel truly blessed to have had that opportunity. We talked deer hunting, his neighbors, land values and the correct arrow spine for my Black Widow bow. He told me to try a 500 spine and put my 400's aside. I am going to buy the 500 shafts and build arrows in memory of Roger. I was shocked and saddened when i heard the news. I am still bummed. Sorry for rambling but i have many fond memories of Roger.. I will miss our conversations. My heart goes out to his kids and family..

Thanks to all who shared memories of this fine gentleman. I saw Roger at a sportsmans show once long ago, he had those monster racks with him. The deer are impressive, the hunter even moreso. That booth was mobbed, wish I could have spent some time talking with him.

His 'Snuffer' heads are true classics that have inspired others in the field.

Wow, how did I miss this? I met Roger once at Compton thru Kelly Peterson and it was one of the highlights of my Compton visits. I talked at length with him about the Snuffer and the design of it. A few weeks later I received autographed copies of his both of his books in the mail from Kelly. I still read them from time to time and they are probaly the only two books I will never part with. A true legend in deed!

I used the Rothhaar Snuffers for several years. I was not aware that he also made recurve bows, until I came across one in the wodow's stuff. Looks like new "Spirit"

MDW, it was his nephew that made that bow, Alan Rothaar.

Rest in peace Roger. I had the privilege of sharing a hunting camp with him in the early 90's in South Texas, chasing hogs and Javelinas. The dude just oozed coolness.
