Deer archery runs to Feb but normally after gun season around here , the hunting is tough Not saying its impossible, just very little movement in daylight hours. so normally once gun season hits Im done. I often will do some squirrel hunting with a 22 or shot gun (if I want to eat)

Speaking of longbeards, had six of them hanging out around the house yesterday. Why aren't they as unconcerned with my presence in May as they are now?
Was able to get out the last couple of days for our winter bow but no luck. Got busted the first night as they came in behind and I didn't hear a thing. Just turned my head for a quick peek and one of them was staring right at me. Needless to say what they did next. Weather forecast looks good for the next week so there's still a chance.

Haven't been in the mood this late season and tomorrow is it. My buddy is having issues after recurring Lyme's Disease along with over a dozen back and neck surgeries over his lifetime. Just not in the mood myself. Will likely get after the stumps and maybe squirrels later, I can't stay out of the woods entirely. Also spending quality time with my lab Rocky. He's twelve and arthritic so I don't know how long he'll be around. Don't feel in the mood for killing any game right now.

Right into the heart of hare season and just got done boiling coyote traps. Today was a mess, deep snow and a heavy rain. We are supposed to cool back to zero and get 6 inches of snow tomorrow. I will set traps in the morning and let the snow cover them. Then I will take the beagle up into the boonies. Sunday it's church followed by me playing at the county nursing home. A captive audience. Kind of sobering when half of them are younger than myself. I thank God for my health.

The bad front has reached us, at about dusk today. Was nice and, warm all day, you could see the snow evaporating into fog whenever the wind came up. It all but dissappeared in the heavy rain last night, 60s temps, and warm wind. I did first shot, and it was nice being out in the garage. Everythinv in it was covered with heavy condensate though. Cold in there, high humidity, and warm outside. Not good for my tools and table saw thats for sure. Hunting seems in such the distant past. Hard,to believe you guys still have that option. Ive seen deer in the areas I hunted, just feeding about, unalarmed. Now its, sleeting hard, getting cold again, mid Jan is over. Going back into the sub zeros again. Drag... Time for a tropical vacation... There are no rabbits and squirrels about anyway.

Season ended today for me. This weekend is the youth hunt . If weather will warm up just a little I will take my oldest daughter and hopefully get her on her first deer. She missed one last year and this year she has really put the time in and sat for long hours , so far no shot opportunity. Hopefully before weekend out she will get her first deer .

The last day in Illinois is tomorrow, but today will be my last day. I’ll sit a couple hours until closing. No deer harvest this year. I can’t remember the last year I didn’t harvest a deer. I thought that would really bother me, but it doesn’t. I still enjoyed the season and I’m thankful to be healthy enough to get to the woods and sit in a tree.

My favorite month is often February. The farmers are no longer worried about hunters killing their deer and pheasants, so they are more receptive to a guy with a longbow and a quiver loaded with cedar arrows with blunts, it is often warmer, and the rabbits that survived the super cold will have less to no fleas. Winter rabbits in a large Iowa farm grove can be a lot of fun, as long as the famers dog does try to eat me or thinks he has to help find rabbits. Last yearI got into a serious argument with german shepherd, he was positive that he found the rabbit first, even though it had my arrow stuck in it. Luckily, the arrow came out when he carried the rabbit off to eat it. He left me go about my rabbit killing business after that. I hope my Is joint settles down a little first. The steep hills kind of beat me up with buck chasing and pheasant hunting.
