So what do y'all like in your target or 3D bow ? Or do you use your hunting bow ? I use both, but I for the most part like a bow to be longer, more overall mass, and a little less draw weight than my main hunting rig. So what you like ?

From: HARRY CARRY

Large riser, the "horned" shape, length of 66" or longer, with pulling weights between 30# and 35#. Either the wood riser, or the various older metal risers. And LEFTY! I am not a hunter, so I am describing my "everyday" bow choice, since target Archery is my only Archery.

I shoot a full olympic rig at paper.

White Wing by WING archery. 66" long and 37# @ 28. Bow is a beater but one of the best shooters I own. Getting it sanded down now.

Olympic rig and Bear Tamerlanes. Mid to upper thirtys in weight. Havn't done any target work since I had to switch to L/H. All my target bows are right-hander.....I can no longer shoot even very light bows right-hand. Need to rectify that situation!

These will be pretty tips soon as they get a new finish.

Like for it to behave in the hand after the shot and point well. The wing fills both for me.

Bustedarrow, like the shape of that bow. It will look really nice when you refinish it. Please post pics when you get done with it.

Thanks Barber. Will do.

I would love a full blown ilf target rig, but that's not in the budget. Those that I've shot were fantastic. I also have a soft spot for the massive, horned - riser target bows from the 60's. Right now I'm nursing a work related shoulder injury with a '70 or '71 Pearson Javelina very similar to the Wing above. 66", 30# big rosewood riser, white glass. Made a ten stand padded loop d97 string for it and it shoots .750 carbons fast and better than I can hold.

What I like has changed. Liked the massive risered target bows from 1963 to the late sixties long ago, then liked the shape of the risers in the magnesium takedowns of the late sixties early seventies, then got used to looking at the D longbows, like the Hills my best friend was shooting, then decided the best shaped risers were the old painted Black Widows of the late fifties and early sixties, then years later, finally made up my mind what I really liked.

Those classic shaped risers of the rosewood bears with good feeling grips from 1960 to 1962. The '59's had too straight of a grip for me, but the medium size grips of '60's to '62's feels good in my hand, and I really like their riser shapes as well. The '62's have the grip slightly forward and the riser wood extends well into the limbs. That maybe why I like the shape of my '62 Kodiak Special the best of all. If everyone knew how well they shoot, there would be a demand for them, especially the 63-inch one I own. It's smooth, well balanced, steady, and looks good too. I'm telling you, there's "Nuttin Moe Betta" than my '62.

Sentman r/d longbow, dish grip, 66" 60#... few other longbow shooters around here so I'm grouped with recurves and increasing numbers of semi-target (barebow) target rigs, shooting as if trad.

For the occasional shoots that have formal barebow class, want to try my rarely used Hoyt Gold Medalist riser if I can find a deal on long 45-50# limbs

I have two that I like the first is a Wing P-2 and he second is a Golden Eagle, but my favorite was a Bear Tamerlane, I would sell either one of my target bows for a Tamerlane.

For 3-D I shoot a Titan III riser with medium BF Extreme limbs, about 43#.

For indoor I shoot an ILF 25" Gillo G1 riser and SF Ultimate Pro limbs 36#. I also shoot this rig in field archery.

Well, coming from the 60's I favor the wood riser bows like the Hoyt Pro Medalist....likely the best target bow I ever owned and shot. If not that one, then a Wing Presentation....not the takedown, the one piece model. So many good target bows back in the day and sad that they are not in vogue anymore.

My first target bow Soveriegn Lord Mercury something or other complete with mercury filled extension stabilizers. On a three d shoot the thing would wear me out just lugging it around. My rosewood Black Widow had to be the prettiest, but the Hoyt takedowns were by far the best shooters.

Same as you Barber, while I hunt with a 62" 50# bow my set up for 3d is 64", 40#, with lighter arrows.

Hoyt Excel ILF Riser with Medium Hoyt Triaxial Carbon F7 Grand prix limbs that pull 34# on this riser. My own BCYX string. Super Smooth and extremely accurate with both 700 spine and 600 spine arrows.

I favor the wooden bows. Love my Tamerlane. Thinking of ordering a new target bow.

I'd like to see Bear reintroduce one of their longer bows like the Tamerlane, but I don't know if there is enough interest with today's archers. Be nice to have a wooden riser target bow.

All of my shooting, paper or 3-D, is geared toward hunting, so I shoot only my hunting bow and arrows. BW PTF 50# @ 24.5" with 575 gn Legacy. (225gn up front)

I have been wanting a White Wolf Target Master for a few years now. Keep buying and trading other bows but it keeps jumping out at me. At some point I'm just going to have to order one. LOL. They come 68 or 70 inch . they have a large riser and they are a R/D longbow. They fit the bill for what I would like to have.

From: deerhunt51
Date: 10-Dec-17

Barber, I hear you on what you like "wood bows" Me to. However, once I shot my Excel ILF I could not believe how smooth and accurate it was. If Target and 3D is what you want to do, you owe it to yourself to try one.

From: Barber

Deerhunt51, I have had a couple ILF risers. I own a Hoyt Satori now and its a fine shooting bow. I will keep it because its always good to have a takedown for those out of state hunting trips. I have tried several takedown bows through the last 8 years and they always loose my interest. I just love a one piece . no special reason other than they just keep my interest.

I'll second what George said. A great shooter indeed. Hard to beat the accuracy of some of today's metal bows but there is something special about each shot that comes off my 1970 Tamerlane. And so accurate and fun to shoot, and smooth as well. Would love to see them start producing the tamerlane.

I would love for Bear to also. I guess the closest thing to a Target bow they have now would be the 64 inch Super Kodiak as far as a one piece.
