So this is a season unlike most of mine. I've had bad knees for a while but quit taking any medicine for them due to kidney issues. So by the time season opened here in MO it was hard hiking to my stands. In addition to that, my son was getting married Oct 21. The rehearsal dinner was at our house so a lot of time was involved in getting ready for that. Also the weather was really warm a lot and I didn't have a strong desire to get out. Finally did hang one hang on stand that I hunted about 5 or 6 times and saw deer but no shots. Now I also have 3 ladder stands out and a week before gun season I went to the one down hill behind the house. Now going downhill is the hardest on my knees and I bet it took me 20 minutes to go 200 yds to it. That night I had just climbed up, pulled my bow up, sat down and put my bow on my lap when I heard something. Thump. Thump. We've all heard a deer stomp a hoof before. Looking around there is a little 6 pt buck in the brush 25 yds away looking at me. You can guess how that ended. A week later, the evening before gun season opened I was back in that stand. 20 minutes before shooting light ended I heard something and saw a deer approaching from my right. It was a little buck walking right in front of me. I grunted loudly several times but he didn't slow at all. So I took a walking shot at about 8 yds. He ran about 20 yds uphill and stood there in the brush. He stood there for a couple minutes then walked a few more yards and stopped. Putting the binoculars on him, I could tell he was going to go down by the way he held his head. Very soon he was down 30 yds from my stand. I had to call one of my sons to help get him out of the woods. I was happy to get some nice meat. Then last week on Nov 29 I had double knee replacement surgery. So that's the end of my season this year

This is the rest of my season.

I’m seeing plenty of blood on the arrow and none on the deer, so I’m guessing the bow is strategically placed... helluva nice shot, man!

Lemme guess.... complete pass-through with a good, sharp 2-blade?

Get well soon!

Thoughtful photography. Best time to take photos is before gut cavity is open, and entrance woods can be wiped or covered. Excellent photo and hunt. Get well quickly.

The broadhead was a 190 Cutthroat on a cedar arrow. Complete pass through. Good blood trail even though I didn't need it.

Hope you heal up quick and complete. Way to go on that buck, that's the real deal. Congrats!

Great hunt, shot and deer! Hope you heal up good as new! And take care of those wounds! Wyatt

Great deer. Do your PT and you'll be soooo much better off next season. Tough to do both at once, but you may be happy in the long run!

Neat story. How long is the recovery from double knee? How do you get around like that?

If you are taking narcotic pain killers, be sure to take extra stool softeners. The worst part of my Nov 8 knee replacement was horrible constipation. Keep a positive attitude... The pain will slowly subside. Good luck, Richard

Thanks for all the well wishes. I'm doing my therapy and following instructions on my meds. Pain has never been real bad but I have a high threshold. I was up walking the next day at hospital with a walker. I'm able to get in and out of bed or a chair by myself. Go to bathroom by myself. Just use my walker to get around the house. The therapist wants me on a cane next week.

Congratulations on the deer. And good luck with healing from knee replacements. My wife has had both her knees replaced so I have a small bit of knowledge about what you are going through. It is a tough situation but in the long run it is a better situation and you'll wonder why you waited so long to have the surgery. Again, good luck & congrats on the deer.

Congratulation on your deer.I know what you are talking about. Had knee replacement Oct 30.My surgery cut my hunt short but glad I had it done.Keep on top of the rehab to keep the knee flexable, I'm doing well and looking forward to next season.

Reading your story I'm reminded how many season I've had similar. Just when you think it ain't gonna happen, nothing can go right, you'll be eating tag soup this winter the hunting gods shine on you and send you a winters supply of venny! That's part of what keeps me coming back for more season after season.

BTW, good luck with the knees and congrats on marrying one off!

Dnovo,

I had double knee replacement on Veteran's Day of 2015. Missed that year's rifle season.

Was playing golf and walking the course pain free by the end of April.

Don't cheat the rehab, listen the your Physical Therapists, and you be in great shape. The 1st few weeks of rehab suck, but it gets better quick.

Great deer and nicely done photo. Bad news, for now, on the knees but you will be better with the fix. I am due for one, maybe two new knees.

My season has really never started. Bad case of plantar faciitis and I have only made it out once. Hope to get out again before season ends but walking any distance is almost impossible.

Despite the knee issue, your season ended on a good note.

Congrats on a nice buck! And you can't beat it when they go down within sight. Thanks for sharing your story. I wish you a full and fast recovery with your knees. I don't know how you talked them into doing both at once, though. I need to get mine both done, but they say they won't do them at the same time. Too much stress on my body all at once, they told me. Hope you heal fast and congrats again on your buck.

I've had a few very nice PMs and I appreciate all the thoughts. Little update on my recovery. I feel like I'm doing pretty well. At 9 days post op she took my walker away and I'm just on a cane. I can actually walk without it for a time. I didn't really know what to expect in recovery but I think I'm doing good. I do all my exercises like I'm supposed to and then some. Can't wait to get out of the house.

Daniel, you are doing fine! Do exactly what your physical therapist asks you to do and be sure to push yourself at home with the daily exercises. This part hurts, but the more you do the better the results. I still have to take a pain pill now and then, especially after walking a couple of miles and bending the knee,.....the pain makes sleeping tough. I still sleep in my recliner in my den as I can't seem to find a comfortable position in my bed. I've been averaging only 2-4 hours of sleep each night, but I usually take a nap after PT and walking. My PTherapist said that this is a slow marathon, not a sprint,.....a 12 month project. We'll both be hunting next fall, pain free! Keep in touch with your progress. Richard

I was off work for 8 weeks when I had my one knee replacement. I'm glad i got it done. No pain now. Only thing I messed up on was I should've got it done 3 week later so I could've got some spring turkey hunting in before I went back to work. I still gotta be careful when I walk through the woods over logs and boulders. It does feel differant. You'll be happy you got it done.
