Nephew wants a bow for Christmas - has asked for a 3- piece T/D recurve, God bless him. He’s Air Force ROTC in an engineering program at Purdue...

Saw a sale price on a Red Stag riser, but what do you do about limbs?

He’s from an entirely different side of the family... 6’2” with quite the wingspan.

And will a Sage be OK for a guy who needs a full-length arrow? Or is there a better choice in a comparable price range?

Height don't always equate to a long draw, but it sure can. I think that they still make a 64" like the Journey. Check with Southwest Archery.

Get a 64" bow because of his height.

Agree with 64" bow.

Southwest Archery.com 3-piece recurve Spyder XL. Updated version of Samick Journey (64" version of the 62" Sage).

64” makes sense to me! I’m 5’4” and don’t own anything under 62”...

Is the Spyder XL/Journey simply a longer riser, with the same limbs and attachment system? He asked for a #40, but I think he oughtta go #30 or #35 tops, since he’ll be getting at least a couple extra inches on DL.... but that’s the beauty of a TD...

I don’t think he’s looking to hunt with it yet, but will find out.

Anybody know the legal minimum for Indiana?

from the thread title-no the sage and red stag arent interchangeable.Journey is a good start.Red Stag is purtier.

there is a pair of 40lbs in classifieds now

The Red Stag riser will accept either the Deer Master or Sage Deluxe limbs. The limbs are pinned with this riser. I have a Red Stag riser with Deer Master limbs and it makes for a 59” bow. It is plenty long enough for me and I’m 6’3”.

Just listed a brand new pair of 40# Journey limbs in the classifieds. Save yourself the cost of shipping and a few bucks off new price. Then pick up a sage riser discounted from Lancaster and you'll have a 64" bow at under $130. Pm me for info.

OK.... quick time out.

Is the Journey just a Sage with longer limbs, or is it a longer riser with the same limbs?

And either way, are Sage/Journey limbs interchangeable?

I think if I were Samick, I would have built one limb form and 2 riser patterns, but maybe that’s just me?

I have both Sage and Journey. Journey is longer limbs and uses the exact same riser as the Sage. Having shot both with my 30 inch draw, Journey would be my choice with anything longer than 29" draw. I have the Red Stag also it is a 60" bow. It will handle my 30" draw it does have some stacking past 29". "I" believe the Red Stage is a little smoother than the Sage with my draw and not as loud at release as the 62" Sage. The Journey and what ever Southwest Archery calls their 64" Journey clone would still be a "better choice" for a beginner with a longer draw of those 3 bows. Any of them will work though. As mentioned the Sage/Journey limbs are not interchangeable with the Red Stage, they have different attachment systems. One thing to be mentioned is the Red Stag is no longer in production and hasn't been for about 2 years now, so finding limbs will be hit and miss if you look for different weights. DANNY

Yes, Sage and Journey limbs are interchangeable and go on the same riser. The Journey limbs are just longer and much smoother. I can lower my price down to $75 TYD if you would like.

Jon - you’re on the radar, thanks! Don’t want you running afoul of Phil...

So next question.... does anyone know if there has been any change in limb attachment system between the Journey and the Spyder XL? Thinking down the road and in terms of heavier limbs.... At his age I’m sure he’ll want them at some point...

GF,

From what I have seen and read they are exactly the same. The only difference is there is some accent wood in the Spider Bow riser, they use an allen screw instead of the thumb screws to mount the limbs, and the bezels as with the Sage and Journey are permanently mounted it the limbs. Again from what I have read some of the people that made the Sage and Journey are making these bows for them. DANNY

The Spider, which is also sold under other names, is a little more refined with rounded edges and a nicer attachment bracket and allen head bolts with bezels.

Samick is selling the Red Fox now in 64"...same as the Journey but with some of the same refinements.

What everyone else said is true, no differences at all.

GF, Lancaster has the Red Stag risers for $60.00, but they're left handed. You can get a new Journey on ebay right now for $95.00 shipped. The seller has 35#,40,45#,50#, nd 55 listed.

Thanks, fellas!

Does anybody think I’m crazy to recommend #35,rather than #40?

From: GF
Date: 05-Dec-17

And while I'm at it....

Looks like if you shoot them full length, you can shoot a 2117 out of a #35 recurve like the Sage if you use a 125 grain point.

That puts you at 12 GPP and not a lot of smoke on the arrow.

I'm reluctant to recommend a carbon shaft, but I think he's going to be shooting full length anyway, so I guess it's not a big concern that carbons are harder to trim to length than aluminum...

Do you think a 31" ICS 500 would be about the right thing? Seems crazy to me, but you never know....

From: Linecutter

GF,

I don't think 35# is crazy. With my 30" draw I am pulling 41# on my Journey, the Sage would be more. A good starting weight or just good weight in general. I use a full length 2016's with 145gr tip and get great arrow flight. Not knowing for sure what his draw length will be, I think 2016's or 2018's would be a better starting point then 2117's. I use the Easton Jazz shafts for my 2016's. I forget what my actual arrow combo weights but I believe it is 10 plus GPP (450gr maybe?). Which ever bow you get him get a High Performance string of some sort to replace the existing string. You'll be surprised how quick those bows will shoot even at the lighter weights. DANNY
