Shakespeare X-15 66"

45@28

It was someone's hunting bow. Got it from a small gunshop. I told the shop owner I was going to pass on it. He wanted it gone and stated a price I could not turn down.

It does have two holes in it from a bow quiver mount put there by the deceased previous owner, but hey, this bow has stories that will forever go untold now. Maybe some new ones can now be made.

I love finding bows like that. A little TLC and they become beautiful meat making tools again! Best of luck. Post a finished pic once you get it back to looking new.

The glue from the masking tape softened the logo. After the cleanup it is now gone.

Does anyone make old Shakespeare repro decals?

Vinyl and black painted masking tape has been on this bow for years!

Nice wood you have uncovered. Looking real nice.

Great seeing that turned around. I would not be able to pass up reworking something like that, except for the left handed bow part. What did you use to remove the adhesive and tape? Chuck S

I love seeing them old bow being put back in action.......good job.

Goof Off, Chuck. But it softened the old yellow finish on the bow. I just rubbed it down, a bunch, with an old cloth and the Goof Off. The old tape glue softened the logo, and the Goof Off on top of that was too much for the old logo to take. It is gone mostly, now. :-(

After the tape residue was gone I used polishing compound to brighten it a little. I found two places where the glass is beginning to split. Very minor places, but, I doused them with Loc-Tite 420 and now we shall see if it holds.

This is what I wrote on facebook about it:

I came upon a project bow yesterday. When I bought it, it was covered in tape and I thought it might be a Shakespeare. Turned out it was. It has two holes where the previous owner, who is deceased, attached a Bear four arrow quiver. Some miscellaneous arrows and broadheads came with it.

There is some limb twist, but not too much. I shot one of the broadhead tipped arrows yesterday. It would appear the archer who owned it before me was probably my same draw length. The old XX75 2016s with Zwickey four blades flew wonderfully out of this Wonderbow. The bow and arrows are still in tune as matched by its old owner.

There are some vintage traditional archery enthusiasts that would never buy a bow in this condition, especially with holes in it. I can only see it and ponder on the memories of previous hunts that I will never know that were shared by this old forgotten bow and the unknown man who carried it.

My wife rescues cats. I rescue old forgotten bows.

There is a member here that reproduces the old gold Shakespear logo decal. I think his name is Al. If you search here for decal, I am sure it will come up. My brother bought some and gave me one for my Cascade, I have not put it on yet, likely this winter You can get creative filling the bolt holes possibly a dowel with a medallion cap Chuck S

Hope that You can get that BOW restored so that it can shoot again!

It's looking good already. The X-15 was their second in their target line back in the day. I had one made in 1968 and it was a great shooting bow, and I used it for several years in field shooting and indoor. It's worth refurbishing.

Should read, 'I had one that was made in 1968'.

Stuck the Hoyt rest back on it and shot it multiple times. It's a nice smooth shooter. Doesn't feel 45lbs. More like upper 30s. Must be the 66" length.

Bud, I may know where there are a few of those left handed rests. Seems like I saw them in a gun shop some time ago if you are interested I can go back and see if they are still there.

That is the original Hoyt Pro Rest.

From: Jon Stewart
Date: 21-Nov-17

The ones I saw were also the original Hoyt Pro Rests also. The owner bought some old stock. He also has some odd size aluminum inserts if anyone wants me to check on a size I can do that for you also. Prices on the inserts were around $4.00 a dozen.

Damn..nice..take it back into the gunshop owner and show him, and just say "Snap!"

Just imagined what it would look like if it didn't have all that tape on it protecting it for all those years, the previous owner did you a favor except the part where he drilled the holes. beautiful job.

Just an fyi, in the future don't use the chemicals. Just use a dishwashing detergent and warm water. You would have been able to save the decal had you let it dry out for a day or so and then used the detergent and water.

Looks great for just a clean up. Not sure that Al does the Shakespeare dry transfer. I asked him if he does Howatt and got a no. But he might. [email protected]

Very impressive, Bud B.! Your taking the time, and having the patience, has awakened a sleeping Lefty, and introduced her to a new day worth living and shooting!!

A few years ago, a bow completely wrapped in masking tape came my way. From the shape, I guessed it was a Bear or a Wing. After peeling and scraping and lifting around 25 feet of tape (on it, said the previous owner's son, since the 1970s), the bow emerging announced itself as a 1970 Bear Alaskan. One of the nicest surprises I've found. Fortunately, for me, it had no holes drilled in it....they can confound me if I don't feel I've filled them correctly...
