Who is a good supplier of various premium staves for bow making, around 72 inches? Looking for hackberry, hickory, osage orange, vine maple and cherry mainly. Any links, Ebay sellers, or names of premium wood suppliers would be appreciated, thank you.

Mike Yancey at Pine Hollow Longbows has premium staves and is a pleasure to deal with. I'm working on one right now that I bought from him.

I've bought them on ebay, Craigslist, at various rendezvous, and such, but I like to cut them myself when I can. Problem is there isn't much osage around here and no yew of course... so I'm always on the hunt.

Mike Yancey at Pinehollw is great to deal with. He really listens to your needs.

Gary Davis at Rattlestick is awesome too.

Echo archery has most of those.

Curt Brisky of Brisky Bows. Well known bowyer with correctly dried staves at a good price. Great guy to talk to regardless.

Dave Robertson at Medicine Bow Woods has yew and vine maple staves. I've gotten a few pieces of yew from him. He sells on ebay as burl.quilt

Osage Outlaw aka scrub-buster has the best I have seen for sale. He sometimes puts them on eb*y, but they generally bring $120ish. I think he has a site, google osage outlaw

Clint (osage outlaw) has the best prices, service and quality. If you avoid the auction and get with him direct you can save a lot of green. He is a very dear friend of mine and also the guy I get all my osage from and have for years. Unless of course cool guys like Jeffy send me presents of wood. I wont put Clint's number up here, PM me if anybody wants it. He will text or call ASAP and ship just as fast.

MY CONFUSE? No desire for MAPLE? I thought (?) that it was a good bow wood???

From: PEARL DRUMS

Maple has uses, but its not good self bow wood.

Any wood that makes a good selfbow will make a good glass bow, but the converse isn't true.

Wanted to get to the hardwood store today. Didn't make it. Had to work late.

When I go, I'll be looking for hard maple, or anything that will make a good bow... of any sort. I love going in those places with an open mind.... well, ya kinda HAVE to, since they don't sell osage or yew :^)

I have been buying mine from Clint lately, ( osage outlaw) no complaints, I am a happy camper with what he has sent me.

Haven't been here for awhile but am shaving some wood again. I'm not "Hurt" by the Maple comment, but have made some hard hitting, low mass and durable straight stave bows from Hard (Sugar) Maple. It's easy to find an 8" blemish free tree here in NY state that is 6' with no branches, or more? Maple was the core wood of choice for many of the early fiberglass builders, and still makes a fine core and backing.

I am another fan of maple. I still prefer osage but always look forward to working a good maple stave when I can find one. I will often go to the hardwood store and examine the 2X6 maples to see if I can find a stave inside that I can chase a ring on. If I don't find that I go for straight ringed 1/4 sawn. If I get lucky on a 2X6 and it has a stave running down the middle I can usually take an edge grain stave on either side of the stave.
