Getting down to the wire here in Michigan, gun season opens tomorrow so I felt fortunate to have this doe walk by the stand this morning. I had about a 10 yard shot and believe it or not I shot just over her back!! I'm glad the selfbow is so quiet because it only startled her a little. I reached down and nocked another arrow and made it count this time. My women has been putting a lot of pressure on me to get some meat so I'll blame the miss on that:) the bow is the very first selfbow I ever made so that was pretty cool. I think it pulls in the high 40s. Cedar arrow tipped with a Zwicky Eskimo. She went about a 100 yards or so.

Nice going Steve, I know about the quiet part, when I shoot mine I have to look to see if I released the arrow....Ha!Ha! That is why they call it dead quiet.

I meant to comment on you shooting that deer with the second arrow, too. Isn't it cool when that happens? You've got the adrenaline rush from the first shot and now you have to get another arrow in hand and get it nocked, then draw and shoot all over again. Congrats again.

Congrats Steve on a fine animal. Love the bow and the story. Very rewarding getting it done that way!

Thanks so much for the kind words everyone. Hunting with a bow that you made makes one think about our ancestors and how hard it must have been for them. I have warm clothing and shelter, I built my bow with steel not a piece of flint. My arrows were built by someone else and I'm not skilled enough to knapp my own points. My string is fast flight, not twisted sinew or plant fibers. My taking an animal isn't a matter of life or death. I do give thanks for them though as I imagine they did as well. I've thought about this many times and my hat is off to them. The simple wood bow is just a reminder of how good I have it, and I'm thankful for that as well.

Congratulations. Amazing how quiet a selfbow can be. Nothing like killing a deer with a selfbow you fashioned with your own hands. Great job.

Haha Mike, good one! I've been jabbed more than once for shooting little ones but that's the best one ever. If it hadn't been so late in the season and my women threatening to throw me out for no venison it would have gotten a pass. I'm back in good graces now I got her an 8 PT with the Smith & Wesson today:)

Isn't it amazing how tough they are. Looks like excellent shot placement and tons of bleeding. Yet she ran 100 yards. Congrats on both your deer.
