I remember the day he died. We were building a two story house and during our coffee break my guys were saying that they had not heard or read much about Howard Hill lately. At noon Paul Harvey announced that he had died. I will launch a cedar arrow today.

Here is an honest question. How would howard fair against the shooters of today? Like if you gave Dewayne Martin an ASL? Whatcha think?

I don't know how well that Mr. Hill would contend against archers of today. Let the NEW guys use the same gear as MR. HILL and be interesting to see how THAT worked! If I remember correctly? Howard worked with some very heavy weight bows in his hey-day?? Pretty SURE that ONE of a kind and they broke the mold!

Its not always bout bulls eyes Wonder how most folks would feel standing there ground with a bull elephant with nothing more then a longbow or even a lion trying to attack you 196 consecutive field archery championships,,,,who else has done that with any bow from any era? I dont think its a question of what if,,,Howard did it all and noone else has and in my opinon will

Well I've been into archery and bowhunting since the late 50's and I've never heard of a "semi-longbow"! It's either a longbow or it ain't.

Seek out a copy of Hunting The Hard Way. You will enjoy the read.

Mountain Man, you got it right no one will ever win that many consecutive wins even with the wheel bows with scopes, mechanical releases, engineerd arrows, balance shafts, even if you hooked all that up to a robot that wouldn't do it.

I DID find a reference to an American STYLE Longbow. Which makes far more sense to me.

Next quiz Elb. I am with you Steve I like words or parts of words. He shot or made a few terms in bows. In some of the records in Europe I don't recall the abbreviations ASL. Rooty

It makes sense because he was picturing the English longbow, and made changes to it that were designed to improve it technically, and make it more american, which in this case seems to involve simplifying it and using local and improved materials (or Bamboo). So it was only partly an English longbow. He also changed the tiller or shape at full draw. Which is fundamental to how a bow does what it does. And he changed the center cut.

As far as a technical definition of a longbow, a bow that relies on it's length to achieve it's draw length over OAL ratio, the ASL is pretty much all longbow.

People often have lots of ideas about what Howard Hill and what he was not. I wish Jerry would right that book and clear some more of these rumors up. Comparing Hill's shooting to todays archers target shooting is not what would set him apart. Go small game hunting and the difference would be obvious. There is a record that will never be equaled. I matched Hill's pheasant record. I would bet that if Hill grew up or lived where I did that there would many more pheasants listed and he would not have missed the hundred or so that I missed, but the fun is in the attempt. I was told that the game taken list is incomplete. Hill on bowhunting, "It's a lotta fun."
