Saw a utube video that said Bradford Pear was very hard and dense and turned well on a lathe. It looked yellow and aged to a deep color just like Osage.Any one tried it for bow wood.Thanks. >>>---> Ken

I made a short paddle style bow from Pear one time. it was just a domestic per tree that was growing in the yard of an old homestead over in Lee County Texas. it was good bow, but I let somebody talk me out of it.

My experice is that any fruit or nut tree will make a good bow.

Wood looks good and there is plenty of it available. Any bow makers tried it? >>>----> Ken

I know they are brittle to wind at least all the ones in my neighborhood

Yes they do break a lot. What I read is the angle the branches grow from the trunk and the weight of them. They seem to always split off at the junction but the limb itself doesn't break. The wood turners are starting to pick them up. Just wondered if maybe we are missing out on a good deal. I would like to try making a self bow but hate to waste a lot of work if it is not any good.>>--->Ken

Had a large one come down in the yard a few years back. It was fairly dense wood. I've heard that it's brittle in tension. Might be a good idea to back it if you do try it out.

I have made one bow from Bradford pear. I would call it a very decent bow wood. The piece I had was about like red oak in weight, lighter than hickory anyway. It seemed to behave pretty well, I don't remember all the details but it was about 64" and 50# stiff handle bow.
