The October weather here has been sunny and warm, perfect for getting to all the chores on my list. When the weather turns, and it will, I have 14 risers all cut out, ready to go, waiting for me in my shop. I did stop at Edensaw Lumber in Pt. Townesnd, WA and bought some Rosewood. I'm going to make a copy of my 1960 Kodiak Deluxe, Rosewood and Zebrawood. That will be riser number 15. The forecast is for cold weather and rain............my workshop is calling..... Richard

Richard don’t forget me when you glue some up! I’m ready for one in zebrawood 48-50 lbs haha

I was beginning to wonder where MOUNTAIN was a-gettin' those pictures! Didn't think that HE had quit steering trains just yet! I'll watch and cheer while Y'ALL build the bows! ( PURDEE BOWS!)

I am getting close to completing my Hickory bow, looking at 45 to 50lbs. @ 28"

I had to back it due to a ring violation, but will do another soon. Still have to fine tune my tillering, but very close to finishing as soon as I figure out what to use to do that. (color of stain)

Date: 01-Nov-17

I forgot to mention that I want to do an Osage bow, either next or do another hickory for the experience first. This one is 68"

Good luck on your Osage.

I've got one done except for a handle wrap. Trying to decide what I want to do there, either leather or glue soaked black jute, not sure how I want to go yet. Will post pics when I make the call.

It's 54" 42#@27" Osage self bow.

I've gotta get into this, I've just gotta. I've thought about it in the past, but since joining here and seeing the bows you folks make, It's lit a fire in me.

From: Hal9000
Date: 01-Nov-17

throwback.... it is way easier than you think on laminated bows. A bow making friend once told me, SmoothOn will make a bowyer out of anybody. If you can find someone close to you that makes them, having someone show you the ropes makes a big difference.

Thanks Paul. I don't know of anybody here locally, but I'll ask around. I guess I need to start watching some videos.

I have an osage in progress for Bob at Toxocraft Bows. That's about it right now, its hunting season!

I always have several going, and work on bows off and on throughout the year, but bow making really seems to kick into high gear after the hunting seasons have ended. I'm trying to do some bow work now, but also trying to hunt and get household stuff caught up before the weather turns to crap. The wife, for some reason, sees my Bow Shop more as a mere wood shop and throws honeydo's at me sometimes... like now... and that sets me back a little. I don't really mind... it's actually a nice change of pace.

By the way, I guessed Bodymanbowyer up above cuz that looks like his big paws.

This is one of the three I'm working on now. Bamboo backed osage. Just coaxed it gingerly to brace height.

From: Jeff Durnell Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member

Honestly, I think it's too radical and I'll be surprised if it doesn't fail sooner than later. It's good wood, good construction, will be good tiller and balance... I just fear I'm asking too much of it by way of design. I'm pushing our working relationship to its current limits... 'our' being osage, bamboo, and me. But you know how it's said folks need to know their limitations? This is kinda how we're introduced to them :^)

From: RonG
Date: 02-Nov-17

Jeff, I don't see how you managed to create that Osage, and I thought my hickory had dips and curves, mine looks like a sheet of glass compared to that Osage, that is one neat bow, I have never seen one that snaky......Wow!

Don't want to leave out the yew bow, that is super nice also.

There you go Throwback, here is your opportunity.

I agree with Jeff, it looks like bodymanbowyer

Jeff, If you straightened out that bow, it'd be 4" longer! My question would be does it draw like it's 4" longer or do you still have to respect the tip to tip length regarding draw?

Jeff D, this question is for yoouuu :-) JF

Handle, if everything works out for the best, they draw like a straight bow of the same length.

Yes, when laying them out, I figure the ntn length to suit the draw length like any straight bow. And, bow length is measured in a straight line from tip to tip, not along the curves.
