Well the younger bucks were chasing doe's like crazy last night was the report a friend of mine that hunts the same area here in Indiana seen so I hit the woods for a few hours this mourning and had a 4 pt buck pass by at 8 yrds at 9:07am and I had to leave at 9:30am to get back home when on the way out I seen a doe cross a buried gas line cut out (about 30 yards wide cut) and just another 40 yards past here was an old pot belly buck with small tree on his head-lol. I know wehre I will be in the mourning : ) Got a pic of the doe with phone and didnt see buck until after i had crossed and he was left of the doe on the edge browsing then stepped into the thicket.

yepppers., I guess that doe was using that big oldd buck for 'protection" haha!

You may have heard the story of the spike buck and the old one... ;) Good luck tomorrow.

haha! you know the reality though-bucks like that never cross the same spot twice within a two week period or so, but generally within a 40-80 yard spot though. I will just have to see what the wind deals me and terrain. Lots of scrub and thicket to deal with, my only chance at him is when he crosses the cut out and hope he is within my range. He avoids any tree large enough to put a stand in except when he is in the stuff you can't get a shot in even straight down-lol.

..and thanks TrapperKayak--have a feeling I will need lots. Still watching wind and temps, does not look good until next Tues/Wen. though. Getting warmer in my area so he may not be inclined to be out past first light. First I am waiting on a friend that hunts the same area to make sure it is not the buck he is on. If so , then I will go back to my stand and see what the cards deal me.

My friend goes goo goo over antlers so I always let the one he is after go by. I just like getting a big one with huge tenderloins and football roast on him-yummmmy!

I would like to add I am only sitting a stand as my comfy stalking boots (High Country Hunter) won't be finished on a resole and stretch for another week or so from Russell Moccasin. If your looking for the best boots/shoes they are the place to go. Mine are triple vamp so they are waterproof too with 400grams of thinsulate. I sent them back to change out the sole to a Turkey wedge with a Newporter sole for stalking. I hate boots with lots of deep tread on a muddy day-feel like the michellan monster going through the woods-haha!

I'm up north near the IN/MI border; where are you in Indiana seeing the 'great chase'.

Haven't seen bucks chasing here yet.

I hunt Johnson County-sorta south central Indiana. I wouldn't exactly call a bunch of youngsters chasing "tail" the great chase though-haha!

srad-I have not personally seen it but I was there yesterday mourning and did not see it but after I left as I rarely hunt evenings ( I take full time care of Parents) if I cannot get a nurse to watch over Parents anyway, but a friend of mine hunted in the same vicinity I am in and activity can change from one ridge to the next really there and he text me this mourning and told me just after I had a forkhorn come by. He is a straight shooter so there is no doubt to it.

We are seeing it too. Young bucks have been running through our yard and doing a little light 'sparring'

I saw 6 different bucks in 24 hours Monday and Tuesday, after not seeing any so far. Southern Illinois.

Re-checked the weather and in the mourning looks to be good, about same as today. Hope I find a good set-up for that buck as he is coming out of a 1/4 mile circle of scrub and tall grass, weeds, crp, golden rod and a few hundred other short growing plants-lol. Be hard pressed to see an Elephant-haha!

Have had a couple of nice younger bucks running in my pastures last two days. Scrapes and rubs have amped up big time. Hopefully we have a good rut her in Michigan

I saw a real nice 2 1/2 year old 10 pt with a doe yesterday. Hoping he gets to pass his genes on. Anyhow she wasnt letting him mount but she wasnt too intent on chasing him away either.

Yup all over the place just the right one hasn't been lined up yet. Babies need to grow up.LOL

Need to be there when he is at right place at right time and then all good things should happen!

Yep, she is just letting him know he has an admirer : )

Spot on there RymonCat, problem in my area is come gun season there is 9 million shooters popping everything that moves and the young bucks are running around like it's their birthday- haha!

From: RymanCat
Date: 18-Oct-17

True but the big ones who hide in the housing dev. aren't going to get gunned down they just keep growing. Got to get it while its on after leaves fall and the small game season starts gets even harder unless you know how to set up and let scatter gunners push to you.

I spent the afternoon in one of my brush blinds. About 4:30 a doe came running through and stopped right in one of my shooting lanes and offered me a perfect shot at about 12 yards. I have another doe tag, but I thought I'd wait and see what developed. A few seconds later and here comes two bucks hot on her trail. One was a spike with about 10" horns and a four point. They both stopped and thrashed some beach brush on their way through as the doe ran down over the hill. They came to within about 15 yards of me and milled around then started eating beach nuts. I missed a decent buck a few days ago just at sunset and I'd like to use my buck tag on him if I can, so I wasn't really considering shooting either of the two smaller bucks, but after a while I started to weaken. I decided if I could get drawn on the 4 point that was now in the neighborhood of 10 yards, Id take a shot. I had a blast over the next ten minutes. I had both of those deer in my lap, but one of them was always looking in my direction. I got to half draw twice, but couldn't get to full draw and had to let down each time. After a while they fed out of range and over the hill, but I had more fun with those deer than I would have if I'd shot one. Now if I can just be in the same spot at the same time as that other buck again...

RymanCat-in my case the big ones seek refuge in the bordering military grounds : ( throwback-that is great! I sorta had same thing this mourning only to come across a huge buck which after calaboration with a friend/fellow hunter in the area he may be a buck I thought to be dead already, not shooting may pay off. Maybe great things are in your future as well!

From: throwback
Date: 18-Oct-17

Thanks Fiero Furry, I hope that's the buck you saw. Good luck with him.

I jockeyed some other things around so I can get in the woods earlier tomorrow. I'm going to hunt mid morning til dark. The buck I missed isn't a slammer, but he's decent for around here. Should have had him the other day. I hit a branch about half way between us that I didn't see and saw my fletching kick hard to the right and shot just behind him. Thank God I didn't hit him.

"you know the reality though-bucks like that never cross the same spot twice within a two week period or so"

Don't let the bucks where I hunt get wind of that! LOL! I've seen the same three nice bucks come out at the same spot in the morning and meander a cross the same small over grown food plot three times in four days.

Sounds like fun times. It's been warm and windy here in Nebraska and we haven't seen much deer activity at all. Just waiting through the October lull for things to pick up.

From: Fiero Furry
Date: 20-Oct-17

Clyddebow-haha! I will keep it a secret : ) the land I am hunting now is public and the deer re-act a lot different than any of the private lands I hunt, there you can almost set your watch to them-hehe! To find a mature buck here you don't look for 'trails" but you first picture a little 8" buck on the ground and look for small seedlings and pre-saplings rubbed on one side within 6" of the ground, this is the hoof doing that and will tell you the direction of travel.

Nothing but does and fawns in my backyard for over a year. Then this am this guy shows up. The only reason he showed up has to be the does that are here everyday.

I didn't get out yesterday, I won't today or Sunday. I hope my big 12 stays away from the muzzle loaders.
