Was hunting the edge of a clearcut this evening. A buck crossed the corner of it and made his way toward me. He was really being cautious. He constantly stopped, and looked, seemed to miss nothing.

I thought to myself.."he's a cagy little rascal"

It was a medium sized 6pt nice big Y's and pretty nice brow tines nice for a 6pt.

I thought if he comes in range I'm going to shoot him.

sure enough he turned and came right toward me.

At 15 yds he angled behind two small white pine, and I came to full draw....AND THE LITTLE BUGGER STOPPED AND LOOKED RIGHT UP AT ME!...LOL heck I was 20' in the air! I know because my rope was 16' and when I stopped my bow was clean off the ground, so I had to be 20'-21'...

Anyway we had a good long stare down, and I held at full draw for what seemed like an eternity. I looked him right in the eye and literally smiled, and thought..."you little rascal, your gonna beat me"

And with that he swapped ends and was gone.

Guess that's why I love bowhunting.

Wow, and that is a steep angle for him to bust you. I had same thing happen years ago, but I was able to let down without him spooking, and shot him a few minutes later. But, the sun was at my back and shining into his eyes so I dont think he could see me well. Anyway, good story and there is always tomorrow.

Not to hijack your thread I had similar experience this evening with a doe, exception I was in a brush blind and she was at 10 maybe 15 feet out just as was getting to full anchor she turned insides out and blew snot in my face!! And yes I just chuckled and said man that was fun.

Come down outa that tree, Shade. I know you are plenty good enough to take one from the ground. I'll bet that will raise the short hairs even more.

Great encounter!

But...but...they're not supposed to look up! That's the whole appeal of lugging treestands and all the stuff that goes with them into the woods!

Geez.....someone needs to teach these dumb deer how to read so they can learn what they're supposed to do and not do!

4nolz...I always pull my rope up, not so much because they smell it..if they can smell your rope they can certainly smell you anyway. But I have had deer notice a rope blowing or moving in the wind.

Regardless as to whether I'm in a tree or on the ground the last thing I want is something that draws a deer's attention to my stand location.

They are wiley buggers for sure! Worthy prey!

I never make eye contact...I swear the can pick up "predator vibes".

That said...they can be pretty good at remaining whitetails instead of table fare. I just cant believe they'd rather spend a cold winter hunkering down in blowing snow, rather than resting comfortably in my nice toasty smoker!

Go figure.......

You need a HECS suit. LoL. Where's RC when you need him! :)

Those type encounters are what keeps us going back. And makes us better bowhunters.

I always felt that bowhunting whitetails was always like a game of tag, trying to get the shot off clean before the animal saw me.Once spotted I couldn't claim any kills!

WE all been there! The buck i am hunting now scans ahead in the trees looking for stand sitters so I am forced to hunt the ground. Actually laying in a ditch/creek bed 6' wide he crosses- lol. Maybe you could do the same???

Deer have learned over the years where to go, when to go, and where to look, lol!

deer look up a lot They know hunters climb trees lol

Wensel also said 30 years ago you could dance in your stand and deer would rarely notice you. Now a days button bucks walk through the woods looking up in trees. He thinks it's a learned behavior taught by old smart mature does that have been around a season or 5. Makes sensr to me.

You didn't get him cuz God's got plans for you to shoot a big 8 point in the rut. That's my wish for you anyhow Steve!

Pa Steve...the smartest critter in the hood is the old matriarch doe who's tended to mutiple years of younguns!

I've been busted by more of those evil vixons than any buck!

I had one with twins, a couple years ago, who hunted ME down like it was her job...maybe it was!?!?

She'd go above and beyond to find me, then spend an hour or so blowing & stomping til any deer in the same area code was alerted. ALWAYS either just out of range or she'd work her way behind me such that no shot was possible.

Our numbers are down following a CWD debacle for several years, so I won't shoot any does...but mark my word...I'd of taken her out in a heartbeat if the opportunity arose...lol.

Which, of course, never materialized........

I had an old doe do that to me several years ago. This deer had my number. So, I introduced her to my 35 Remington once doe day opened. I know it was the same deer because as soon as I laid eyes on here coming up through the woods, she was doing what she always did. Looking up into the trees. God Bless

LOL...yes i've had a few run in's over the years with those "evil vixens"..LOL (got a kick out of that).

I will admit though the tree I picked?... well I knew better.

That's what really makes me smile. It offered the best shooting lanes, but wasn't the best tree to be in. Knew it and did it anyway. Had I chose a tree in the midst of the pines close by, I might be frying his backstraps with my eggs this morning.

Deer have a way of using our dumb mistakes and live another day all the wiser.

Here is a trail cam pic of the spot.
