I know 2 blade heads are recommended for low draw weight bows for better penetration. What is the minimum draw weight you guys would want for 3 blade heads?

Same as for any other. My first deer was taken with a 40# Pearson that I pulled to 27" or about 37#. Had complete penetration at 30 something yards and only the fletching kept the arrow from passing through. That said, I have mostly used two blade and 4 blades most of my hunting years.

3 blades penetrate just as good or better as 2 blade in my test. This deer was shot last Tuesday and Tami used a Wensel Woodsman Elite 125gr I had razor hair shaving sharp and she is hitting 28 to 30lbs at her draw. It went threw a rib, onside lung, centered the heart and into offside lung 50yrd dash and crash.

A proper set up low poundage bow (50-55#) will get better penetration than higher poundages- this is all I will say about this as I am sure it will start an all out war-lol Go study physics/engineering and "read and understand" Dr. Ashby's full study before reply. Case in point-stay with 2 blade fro trad.

So some of you that do not like to read -lol to keep you from busting a blood vessel my above statement is directly related to "arrow design" it all comes down to the arrow!

I'm a 3 blade guy. I wouldn't hesitate to use them on deer/black bears with any decent performing bow of #45 or heavier.

I don’t have an opinion as far as a cut-off number, but as considerations....
#1 - what are you looking to gain from a 3-blade?
I think there are reasons why 2-blades out-penetrate 3 & 4-blade designs, and which have nothing to do with the frontal area of the blades. So if you’re just looking to cut more Stuff, you might well get there with a wider 2-blade design.
Another thought.... A lot of 3-blade designs have a chisel-tip, rather than the sharp leading edge of a Woodsman or Snuffer. I have used the Thunderhead 125 in the past (and I would probably go straight back to it, if someone told me that I had to use a modular head), but there’s no getting around the fact that it takes more force to pop through the hide with a chisel than with a knife edge.
And don’t forget the length:width ratio.
I guess I’m saying there are a lot of factors influencing penetration with a three- blade versus a two-blade, and the actual number of blades is probably a lot farther down the list than you might think.
And we haven’t even gotten started on tuning or the all-up mass weight of the arrow behind it.
So maybe we all should’ve started by asking what draw weight you’re planning to use?

I have been using Woodsman Elites. Pulling 43#@27" on a longbow and have shot thru all 4 deer I have taken. I believe it to be the best 3 blade as far as getting good penetration with a lite setup.

I dont think draw weight is as an important factor as some believe. Most 3 blade heads now are of a slimmer diameter and if they are properly sharp, should penetrate just fine at lower weights. A well tuned arrow, flying straight and good shot placement are going to get you good or full penetration on a big game animal. An arrow hitting sideways never will.

I'd say anything over 30 lbs. Catch is those lower poundage set ups need to be really well tuned and I'd keep the shots under 20 yards

I use 2 blades but 3 blades leave a nice hole thats not going to close up on you. 2 blade leave a slot which on a slow bleeding hit can scab over on you. If shooting something built for penetration like the woodsman any weight bow that you shoot 2 blades from will work fine with a woodsman type.
