I started making some pine pitch this weekend and am not sure the consistency I am looking for. I made the first batch straight and it is really brittle, as soon as it starts hardening up as it cools. The next batch I added saw dust and bees wax and it stayed pliable for a lot longer but within a couple hours it is just as brittle as the raw batch. I'm not sure if it's supposed to set up like JB Weld or have a little give. Thanks for any help

JB weld would be ideal. :) Brittle is not good either. Normally the toughest you can get without brittle showing up is around finger nail hard.

no exact recipe but I start out and add about 1/4 Volume of bees wax and oak ash from the fire or finely ground up charcoal to my melted pitch, I get that mixed good then drip a little on a sheet of note book paper, let it dry,[ don't take long ]and try and bend it, if it breaks it is to brittle so I add more bees wax, if it will bend without breaking but is still sticky I add more ash. Takes a little fooling with it to get it just right, seem pitch is different so I have never been able to get an exact recipe, I usually make quite a batch at a time. Pappy

This, but I also grind up some dried rabbit dung and add to mix.

I just cook pitch in double boiler made from tuna, olive, chicken cans. Punch holes to strain out needles, bark, etc. mix with ground hardwood charcoal and deer or rabbit droppings. Mix slowly to a consistency that you can ball up on a stick. Warm pitch and wipe small amount on arrow notch. Heat the stone head push into the arrow notch, hold & straighten till it cools. John
