Here in Northeast Penna. it has been unseasonably warm for this time of year and very dry as well. Evening sits have been very tough with the gnats and mosquitos swarming around all the time. It is also so warm it is tempting to doze off, but luckily I am hunting from a folding stool on the ground and if that happens I won't have far to fall. When I get home I always strip down and do a thorough search for ticks in front of a mirror ( that's not a pretty site ). So far the only tick I have found was on my pant leg Monday evening. All in all it is still great for this 72 year old bowhunter to be out and enjoying this wonderful heritage of ours. I only hope that one of my grandsons will pick up the interest, my son is sort of into it, but not like I would like to see him. This year I am hunting with a Black Widow PSA-V, 53# and using Carbon Express Traditional shafts that I crested & fletched myself ( see photo ). Best of luck to all and hopefully we will get some rain and cooler weather in this part of the state.

Got a rain here in central Ohio this morning.

Zero ticks so far here in Michigan. We have been running several degrees above normal. Forecast is for temps to drop next week. The long walk to the stands and back are rough on my knees but I keep trying to go. Good luck with the gnats and skeeters, and stay in the woods!

It is frustrating. I agree. I will get out Friday night. Just got my new camera arm. Going to try to film a KILL this time. Ive tried so many times and cent keep em in frame.

for this reason I have not even been out yet. Got warm rain last night. Might hunt at Samson state Park this weekend, going camping there. Gonna look for the monster white buck I saw in velvet already sprouting 10 points back in June (he's not available to hunt unless he got out of the fence). I've not seen a single tick this fall yet even on the dogs. It is supposed to be fairly warm, but also kind of wet this weekend. May be a good hunt coming.

Haven't been out since the first day. We need rain and it looks like Monday and Tuesday will be the first time for some wetness. Been cleaning up around the house; flower beds, trimming fruit trees and a few lilacs next to the road. Fixing the bird feeders, and making sure the chickens are ready for winter. They seem pretty ambivalent about the whole process though. Got the fields mowed at the farm and the cabin in fine fettle so all is pretty well set now. None of my kids or grandkids hunt either...so I suspect I may be the last of the Mohicans in our immediate family.

Actually, I just haven't been in the mood for hunting, and I keep thinking about gutting, dragging and getting it taken care of quickly in this warm weather. Nowadays I don't do much of anything quickly. But I know it will only take a cool down to get me to the woods for anything but stumping. I'm sure I would be eternally confused if I lived in Florida or other southern state were it really doesn't get much below forty....at least normally. Weather is what weather is so we just endeavor to persevere 8^)). Have a safe season.

Calvin, I will be in the Adirondacks Saturday if you want to join me..the season in the North is just too short. The warmth isn't helping any, that's for sure.

It is warm but you can't get these days back, so I hunt as much as I can. Found one tick so far. Had a bee buzzing around for a while the other day. Guess my thermacell doesn't really work for bees.

Was a bit warm this morning and now up into the 80s, getting muggy and the darn wind is backwards. Probably will just stay in this afternoon with the wind swirling and being humid and all. Dang

Much like the rest of the N.E. as of late ...HOT and dry..with switchy fronts thrown in for measure ....Like George , only out opening morning thus far ....Rain today , then more warm (and those finicky winds) before a projected more stable , fall like weather pattern enters late next week ......Hunting small areas leaves little room for hunting fidgety winds . Patients is whats called for in such conditions .........but boy is it tough to do ;)

Vacation starts tomorrow, but instead of chasing critters, I'll be working on the wife's car. She hit a buck evening before last and her car is out of commission.

We almost got rain today but it went just south of us.

Been a little cooler in the mornings this week. Mon morning some folks had frost, I had 34 here at the house, I'm sure parts of North Central PA probably seen temps in the 20's in the morning ? But its been warm in the afternoon yes.

Been out a couple of times this year during early seasons in PA and VA. The temperature was in the 80's in both places. Just doesn't feel quite right. Will be 80 degrees again in VA thus weekend for the opener. Anxiously awaiting the first freeze so it will actually feel like deer season.

wet wet wet here in iowa this week which is good as we have been in a drought all year. we have had south east wind most of the fall so far as another hurricane is coming to the gulf coast. still i saw 3 deer and about 10 turkeys tuesday evening. i know one thing my old pearson bph - 52 is ready to rock and roll! best shooting short bow i've shot. at 75 years young i'm still thrilled to be in the woods...just don't climb trees like i used to.. which is fine! you all have a great deer hunt this fall and GOD BLESS!

I really like 60 degrees for the morning hunts so far. I usually stay out till 8:30. Haven't seen a tick or mosquito yet. Evenings are way to warm for me, especially if you have a marginal shot. There is plenty of time left here in 2B(11-25-17). The deer seem to be bedding way before daybreak.

Temps back around 80 again this afternoon and very humid, but we are expecting rain tonight and tomorrow ( remnants of hurricane NATE ). Put a ladder stand up in back yard today for practicing in anticipation of Indiana bowhunt in 2 1/2 weeks. I don't have any up in the woods this year, but my son & I will be hunting out of them in Indiana so need to get accustomed to shooting from the elevation. We will be hunting with Bushy Creek Outfitters in Indiana and hopefully will get some shooting out there. Later in the week our weather should start getting back to more normal for this time of year.

What a crazy season it has been. The first day was the coolest so far. Hot, hot, hot so far.

Hunted the corn the first Sat. a.m. Very windy and thought it would be a good time to do it. Hunt into the wind or cross wind, walking across rows. Peeking into the row and looking up and down before stepping into it completely. Row after row after row....

Last Saturday was very hot. Found a spring fed pond while on a bike ride the day before and rode up on a very surprised 6 pt. Guess where I hunted Saturday a.m. and p.m.?

And guess what I saw? Two million gnats and mosquitoes, thought I was taking a raft trip down the Mozambique.

Today...for some mentally challenged reason, I had the need to head to the Gamelands.

I guess I figured I would not be messing anyone's hunt up as it was pushing 1:00 when I got there.

Plan was to head up the road for a certain amount of time then cut down over and see what the woods were looking like.

From: monkeyball

To bad it is so blasted hot, the sky was beautiful, and there was a nice nw breeze blowing.

A nice "transition " area on the way down over...

From: monkeyball
Date: 10-Oct-17

I had " X" amount of time to get down to the bottom and I was almost there when I hit "POSTED" signs. I got out farther on top than I thought.

And now it was time to head back up, as soon as I got past this rock bed.

Man, it was hot today! Hey Mr. Joe Frisky, check out my deer hunting knife, and no, you can't have it.

The Blade Smith's last name must of been China. Don't let that fool you, the bugger is sharp! OK, I'm cooled down, let's get back to the top of this ridge.

Good sized Oak....

When I got to the top there were lots of little pines growing and you could actually smell a very sweet pine aroma.

I think they are White Pine.

A good way to tell is by the five needles growing out of one capsule.

Just about to the top and look what I found. We are a lucky bunch to be able to live in a country like we do.

I folded it up and took it out with me.....with honor!

So finally back out on the road, and I can see my trusty ride down thru the forest.

Rumor has it that Fall will be here one of these weeks. I just hope it shows up while the Archery season is still here. Good Shooting->->->->Craig

Same here in NW Jersey. Amazingly though, not a single tic. Hard to fathom after the onslaught this spring.

A little cooler this morning but still very humid. Can't wait for those high 30s and low 40s mornings and evenings.

Have my buck but another doe won't go to waste. Luckily here in NJ we have a permit archery season starting around Nov. 1st so have another chance at a buck during the rut.

Good luck to you guys.

Another rainy day today, almost more of a heavy mist. Wind is suppose to be out of the East and temp was just a bit cooler.

Have you ever had one of those days that just pull at you to get in the woods? Today was it for me.

Did not get done with house stuff until about noon, then gathered my stuff up less my camera and seat. This was going to be a quick sneak and peek.

Decided to hit the other side of the woods due to the East wind and had just got to the top of a short hill and checked the wind. It was coming out of the SW. To late, as I was there now.

Was not in the woods but 15 min. sneaking 4 steps at a time out this Oak ridge. Looked up ahead and saw a big bodied deer bedded down behind two small trees.....

and he was locked on to me. Maybe 30 yds. 1 thsnd 1, 1 thsnd 2, 1 thsnd...up and gone! Very low, but wide rack. Not sure how many points, but enough.

Out there in the center you can see two small trees close to each other. He was bedded right behind those. Sorry about the photos, they are of off my Primitive flip phone.

From: monkeyball
Date: 12-Oct-17

So I kick myself a little bit for not being a little slower and then continued out the top.

The buck had gone down over to the right of the last photo, I was going straight.

Slowed it down even more, 4 steps then look, 4 more then look.

Looking down the other side now I see antler. I pull the glasses up and yep, antler for sure, and this one is bedded also and looking slightly away from me. Looks like a typical small ridge buck. Maybe 6 and they fit in a medium basket.

There are a few trees just below me and I tried to close the distance a little, maybe 25-28 yds now.

All of a sudden his head turns up at me , nose in the air, and he gets up. He's facing me now, and looking hard. dang!

I bleat to him with my mouth and he strains his neck out further and I get a slow side to side tail wag. This goes on for a few minutes and then he turns almost broadside to me like he is going to walk away.....but then turns again and faces me. This isn't going to happen.

I managed to dig my cell out of my pocket, flip it open, and take a photo. He stands for a short while, gives about 3 foot stomps and a blow, and heads out the ridge in front of me.

In the photo below if you see that one little squiggly limb about a third of the way over on the right. he is right above that looking at me.

Finished out my walk and had two doe come up on the gravel road in front of me when I was heading back home.

Man, it was a great day! Good Shooting->->->->Craig

Scott (Caracajou), Sorry, just now saw your post. Thanks for the invite. How did you do? I have not ready any further in this thread just in case you posted something already, my apologies for not seeing yours before. We went to Samson State Park camping last weekend. I didn't hunt, and it rained a good part of the time. This weekend we are going to the Inlet area, and into Moose River Plains. I'm hunting but I also realize muzz starts up there this weekend, so either that will spell doom for any undisturbed deer-situations, or it will help move them around some and maybe into my lap, who knows? It would be ideal if there were be few or no muzz hunters, but I'll bet there will be some around. Just glad to be going no matter what happens. Hope you did well Scott. TK

Buddy Paul......how is that arm doing?

Today was the early Muzzleloader season start here in PA. Heard one shot at 6:47 a.m. They must of been on a field edge.

Anyhow, damp and mild on this side of the ridge today. Sun was never out and not much wind at all.

Did get out tonight. Hunted a little finger of woods that run between two fields. Got in the woods about 3:30 and got my seat set up. Never hunted this area before and with the calm wind I was going in a little blind.

Had a Tufted Titmouse get so upset with me I thought the little guy was going to fall off the limb. He was so worked up a male Cardinal came in to see what was going on. Beautiful birds.

6:00 finally rolls in and I see something dark off to my left and cross in front of me. It's a yearling doe and looks to be alone. It goes into the thick stuff and the next thing I know she comes busting out and passes me at about 6 yards. Yikes!

Out comes a mature doe and she looks right at me and locks up. Stare down time, then hoof pounding, then mega-snorting. She didn't bolt, she just stayed there and let me have it. Ten minutes is a long time when you have one of these educated gals messing with you. I am probably going to have nightmares tonight.

The yearling sneaks back in behind me and at 4 yds she was just about to "feel the steel" when she bolted and ran off a couple yards and proceeded to blow at me.

Well, my "blind" spot was panning out pretty well so far and I was wondering if they had worked out into the field yet. I was set up close to the one edge. A few minutes pass and here comes the dark yearling down the field and I can tell she is trying to locate me.

I get turned around to possibly shoot and she starts angling over towards me then stop. A minute or so goes by and she turns and is walking up past me at maybe 5 yds. I hit anchor but to much brush right there and let up slowly. That was close......again!

I sat till right before dark then slipped out. What a night.

Bennett got a shot...I almost shot one yesterday in the shade but it was a risky shot and I didn't shoot. Very few shots around me. I only saw one deer yesterday, and hunted 7.5 hrs yesterday.

I have bear pictures on today the 17th... Three bear. So I'll be hitting it hard next week.
