Well I have a Bear Montana that I love, didn't love the leather grip so much so I ordered a beaver tail from Big Jim. Got it in the mail yesterday. I think it will make my bow look great, just never have put one on before. I have searched here and read some how to post. If you have done it and have any advise please feel free to post it. I plan on starting the process tomorrow and Saturday. If I don't totally screw it up I will post a picture. Thanks ahead of time.

Jim does all of mine for me. Call him and maybe he can walk you through it. He does a great job of it.

Here's some high level instructions from how I did mine.

1. Soak tail in water until it's soft and pliable. 2. Wrap you bow handle area in a layer of plastic wrap. 3. Shape the beaver tail to the handle of the bow and secure it with a complete wrap from an Ace bandage. 4. Once tail has dried, cut to the desired finished dimensions you need. Leave a small gap of maybe 1/8" or less for the stitch seam 5. Add contact cement to bow and beaver tail. 6. Press tail in place and stitch it up.

Could the same be done with leather also? My grips are higher so heather tends to "bunch" and roll up like a gut on a fat guy.

Abe Penner sells beaver tails with instructions included. You might be able to find the instructions on the Cari-bow web site. "Matrijo" above just might have forwarded you Abe's instructions. If not they are very similar. The stitching is the hard part for me. Good luck.

Got the tail soaked and wrapped on the handle. I plan on glueing and stitch it on tomorrow, if I mess it up I guess I will send it some where.

Well I finished other than getting some of the barrage cement off were I used too much. Oh and WD40 works great on removing barrage cement off wood. I will post some pictures if it will let me. This was my first try so it doesn't look as good as say Big Jims but it looks good enough that it's staying on for a while.

I had my Beaver tail on my Big Jim Buffalo come loose. And kept putting off reglueing and lacing. Well,this season after a lot of rain it came so loose I could,spin it,around the handle time to fix it! Well I cut the laces and pulled it off and could not believe how beautiful my,grip was. Cocobolo and b/w Ebony with black horn overlay. I cleaned it up and did some shooting without it. And I can honestly say it's not going back on. I like the feel of wood better and the tail grip was,thicker in some areas. My grip feels smaller now which I like much better. And Im shooting better than ever I do like the look of the beaver tail grip but not as much as the pretty wood I have on mine.

It does depend on the bow. Some I hate to hide or enlarge the grip.Some fairly plain bows it really dresses them up. I personally like the brown color with most woods. >>>----> Ken

I agree, on most recurves I like the wood, on straight or slight R/D longbows I like leather on the grip and on hybrid longbows I like no grip...... I know confusing . lol

I have covered up many beautiful woods and it is a tough thing to do, but I just love the feel of the beaver tail grip.

Ive gotten used to it and it is great for hot days when I'm seatting un like those cool days that I'm sweatting :)
