From: dean

I ain't no bow ho, those bows is hoes. I use 'em then hand 'em off to the next guy to use 'em. There are lots of things to collect that can be put to good use. I know a farmer that collected license plates, he had stacks of them. Then one day he realized that hundreds and hundreds of old license plates in his old milking parlor was crazy. So he patched the leaky roof by shingling the entire thing with license plates. Which proves that an old license plate can serve a better purpose than an unused bow.

I think I crossed a red line last week. Carelessly hit the "bid" button without really thinking- now I've got ANOTHER (but only 3 so far) 1955 Grizzly. I swear some of these Ebay sellers have bow boxes already ready with my name & address on them; last two or three arrived three days early!

But it shoots great! Love it! (Dear God please help me.....)

I was a DRUNK for almost 15 years, Have been Sober for 39 years, Now I have many years ago turned my addiction into collecting Recurve Bows. Arrows and Bear Broadheads. I still think its's cheaper than a jug of Hooch a night. And no Hang overs. And my wife of 53 years stood by me all the way. Talk about WONDER WOMAN!!! LOVE HER TO DEATH!!!

From: dean

I am a one woman man, but I have had way too many bows stack up on me. I parted ways with a bunch of them. My wife is not one of those women that likes to cuddle and talk about her feelings. A lot of those bows were, they had to go.

Was looking at some more Bears now and was just thinking recently how I would really like to have about two more very special ones.

However, after I was in Shanghai, China this past weekend (also added some forum comments here from there), and was at three different family's country homes where they had no more than a bed and table, but were very happy, I'm good with what Bears I have on my rack right now. That trip woke-me-up on what I need to get by and how well I've been taken care of by my maker. My rack of a few Bears behind my desk is fine.

I decided many years ago when I hit 50 I would make the choice of just one bow and stick with that so I have went through a ton of bows in the past years and only have one or two at any given time. Next year I turn 50 and I have it narrowed down to one of three bows all of which a friend of mine crafts and are all Horn Bows. In no particular order. 1. Saluki Scythian Horn Bow 2. Saluki Turkish Horn Bow 3. Saluki Crimean Horn Bow

Lukas and I have talked and laughed about this for years as he said I will never be able to stop just as he can never stop making them-lol. We shall see-haha!

I go through periods of trading, buying and selling. But I usually have around 3 or 4 bows. I have 3 now. My wife has 1. I still look in the classifieds to see what might interest me. I told my wife the new longbow I got would be my last one. She gave me that look with a smile and said ya-right.

I've been there lol I went through a spell where I shot a bear take down for years and decided I wanted an old browning (explorer) which lead to another Browning (wasp)then back to bear Alaskan then bear polar and a couple samicks then thought I need a custom job which lead to a black widow then then I thought I need a longbow bought an old York and broke it so got a crow creek and thunder child then I thought well I wanna try a hill Style so I went through three Northern Mist bows and about 4yrs ago a dear old friend built me a Hill a style with a grip to my specs and I'm still a attach to that bow but now I do long to have a NM classic black or a Great Northern longbow but through it all I learned one thing straight grip Hill style is for me but I am kicking around the idea of a very short bow for shooting while hunting and shooting from sitting on the ground but I like to think I'm a recovering bow acholic, lol

I figure all my bows don't add up to a single speedboat and they don't demand to be fed, so as far as hobbies/obsessions go bow collecting isn't all that bad :) Plus someone needs to keep all those custom bow builders fed.

From: Zepnut Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Way-way too many. You know its getting bad when you have to rent a storage shed.

From: mangonboat

I am not sure what phase of the disease I am battling. I've never got as much pleasure out of having the bows as chasing the bows. It's both an intellectual and an economic challenge. My weakness is bows that have fallen on hard times, were abused, misunderstood by their family. I am trying diversion therapy for ABCD ( Acute Bow Collecting Disorder) : I mostly limit my wandering eye to bows offered by non-profits, churches, charitable fundraisers. I've picked up some rare bows, several unique bows, and if I discover an "undisclosed flaw", it doesnt bother me because it was for charity and nothing some Loctite 420, elbow grease, epoxy glue and /or wipe-on poly cant fix. Along the way I learn a bit about bows, experience how difference in bow design and materials impact perceived performance and shootability, and most important to me, get to know archers and bow enthusiasts around the country. Like an AA meeting without the smoke breaks.

About three years ago JD sent me a bow. A few pounds less than my current Go to JD, but game had a way of making major mistakes when I had it in hand. Then this year Nate Steen sent me a bow a few pounds stiffer which allowed me to shoot more of my in stock arrows,(I have way too many arrows), that is built with the same philosophy. I have taken only two shots at game with the Sunset before I dinged my rib cage discovering that folding chairs have a lower weight limit than I was hoping for, one very close miss and one to the back of a bunnies head. Sorry no pics, he was loaded with fleas, I had to get the skin off of him fast, so I wouldn't take those fleas home with me. So now, I have a 55 for when I am up to par and 50 for when I am feeling a little beat up. An odd state of mind, I do not want another bow, these two are it.

From: ga bowhunter
Date: 27-Sep-17

I hear ya Dean wish I could say that lol

From: sake3
Date: 27-Sep-17

So-an hour ago i blindly won another bow on ebay.It wasn't a very good deal and i shoulda backed down/out.Yesterday i finally opened a bow box i've had for a year. The Catalina out of the box is beautiful. But the bows are stacked like firewood in the garage.I hate being so stupid, but i'm not smart enough to change.

From: Renewed Archer

Wade Phillips told me that years ago a friend asked him when he started collecting bows. Wade said, "I don't collect bows." His friend said, "Oh no? Then how come you have about 50 bows?" Wade thought he only got bows as a side effect of buying lots of archery items to get arrowheads. But he replied, "I guess you're right. I do collect bows."

Now he has about 1000 bows.

Do you think he worries about it?

From: Renewed Archer

ga bowhunter, we may never know who has the most bows that are not in a museum. I've heard most of the biggest collectors are very private about it. But I like to think I'm the curator of my own museum, however big or small or funky it is. As I've joked with KDdog, some bows will always be a permanent part of our museum collection, even though we shoot them and they are not just on display. Other bows come and go.

I'm not a collector. I'm a Bow Searcher. Yup. A BSer!

From: dean
Date: 28-Sep-17

Well Ken,You went and did it again. They say a sucker is born every minute, but I am hoping that when that five lam beauty come knocking that you will say where have you been all of my life and ya number of your other bows will either get dusty or get sold. When I get BCY strings I get them form Chad, Champion Bowstrings and have him match my nock size, be sure to ask for the small loops. If you have not watched the John Schulz video, do so and get that visualization ingrained.

Dang auto typer cannot here me when I talk quiet. Of course, I use it because my typing skills suck. I was going ask, How many Hill style bows are you cursed with Ken? I was up to 22 of them at one time.

From: zwickey2bl
Date: 29-Sep-17

Dean, I only have 3 right now; a Big River, a Bama bow (not precisely Hill-style, but close), and this one on order. I've had more in the past, and have had a few by Craig at Howard Hill, but always ones I bought second-hand (not that there's anything wrong with that). This is the first one I ever ordered just like I wanted it.

I love the vintage recurves, too, but find I just can't switch back and forth from recurve to longbow well. So I've sold all my recurves, though I miss some of them. Especially a zebra wood Super Diablo and a Super Kodak. And a Martin Mamba, and a Browning Nomad Stalker I, and... well, you know how it is.

There's been a few that I had to hang up or let go cause I can't handle the draw weights I shot when I was 20 years younger, like a lovely Jerry Hill Elite longbow he made special for me that was 80#. Killed a bunch of deer wth that old heavy stick back in the day. Wish I'd kept it around just for the memories...

Crazy thing is, I've got that one on order, but I'm already thinking "now, if I were ordering another one, I'd do this and this..."

Regards, Ken
