Found these on a scouting walk today.

That's a pile there George. Too hot for a scouting walk here today. How was the deer sign?

That is a haul, will be great with some sautéed onions and tenderloin.

Lots of sign, but they are laying up on the windward side during the heat, and moving late to the creeks and ponds for water. It's amazing at the heavy fawn count since we have lots of bears, coyotes and fishers as well. Nature is pretty cool, even in warm temperatures.

Great harvesting George. I'm picking mine. Yummy :-) JF

Congrats on a successful hunt, George.

I was out on the game lands before the morning fog lifted. Tried to concentrate on lowlands and creek bottoms since it's so dry here and Hens, or any shrooms, don't seem to be growing up on the hills where it's so dry now. Apparently I should have been doing this for weeks because I found 4 Hens, 3 of which were rotting. They were all growing at the base of shingle oaks close to water/swamp. I found one smallish one that was prime and brought it home.

Probably the most common I find along with sulfur shelf. You get a ton when you do find them they can be huge. I just leave me now as they make me nauseous.

Nice find, George. If I lived closer I'd stop in around dinner time just to introduce myself and say hi, lol.

Jeff, your picture is making me hungry, too.

Tzio, take pics of those corals bud, they're cool looking.

Gonna check out some new creekbottom spots tomorrow that came to mind.

Yeah Jeff, these appeared around the time I left for Forksville, or a few days before because I checked a week prior to that. They were starting to dehydrate already along the edges at the top. I'll have to check the deep hollows up on the ridge above the creek as well. Very dry here as well.

You could cook those out here on my driveway right now, I got a little bit of Buffalo left-hehe!

George, yours looks nicely mature, judging by the size of the 'leaflets' and lack of smaller, up-n-coming ones. Another way to age them is by the thickness of those leaflets. Generally, the older they get, the thicker and fuller they get. Just something to watch for, you'll get a feel for it. Also, assuming rain hasn't washed them away, they drop their spores enough to be visible once they've peaked, and you may notice a white dusting on the ground beneath them, sometimes only visible after you cut and remove them from their stem, or visible where they dropped from one leaflet onto another. A lot of mushroom varieties give us this sign. The spores under the Maitake I picked today were obvious, and I saw some gilled mushrooms nearby that had an obvious dusting of spores on the leaves under them also. It looked like white paint overspray.

I went to a new-to-me place on the game lands this morning and found what I believe to be an old Sheepshead, but not sure.

Also found some Sulfur Shelfs. They were very tender but I left them because I have so many in the freezer already.

Great find on the chicken of the woods Jeff D. I haven't found any more of those back here now for about 3weeks :-\ JF

Yeah, these are the first and only good ones I've found so far this year. As dry as it is here, who knows, they might be the only good ones i find. I should probably go back in and get them.

I'd go get um Jeff D :-) You might find a pickling recipe :-) JF

I have been "collecting" oak and ash trees with hen of the woods at their bases for some years now. I stopped counting when I reached six dozen trees.

It's been very dry in Maine this late summer and early fall, so I expect very few of them will produce this year. Nonetheless, I did mange to find about twenty pounds worth of them from three different trees this afternoon--that'll do me for starts. No sulfur shelf yet, however...we need rain!

We need rain too. But I feel selfish hoping for rain when others have too much.

Went this afternoon to check on some Golden Oysters and look for some Hen-of-the-Woods. Jackpot, thanks to the soaking rain we got a little over a week ago. JF

I wish I was confident enough in identifying mushrooms, but I won't take the chance. Have to study up more on them.
