Folks, here's the plaque & bow riser of the "Tradition Lives On" signature bow. The bow is being raffled off for a local Boy Scout I use adjacent to Tannehill Historical State Park, as well as going for Children's Harbor here in Alabama, that works with chronically ill children and their families to help them cope with their diseases. The bow will be given away at the next Howard Hill Southeastern Classic, June 2nd, 2018. There are 21 outstanding gentlemen that have been great torch bearers for Traditional Archery, who have signed this bow. About every week or two, I'll post a photo of one of these individuals along with a photo of their signature. I'll also put a portion of their history that will be in the "Tradition Lives On" book that goes with the bow, as well.

Here's a photo of Dick Mauch. Dick will be inducted into the National Archery Hall of Fame in 2018. Here, also, is part of what I'll be putting in "The Tradition Lives On" book that will go with this one of a kind bow.

Question: "Can you share your most memorable moment you had, such as a hunt or some other event while enjoying this sport."

Answer: "Perhaps topping the most memorable would be the 1965 Trip to Mozambique, Portuguese East Africa. This was from boarding the plane in Omaha to join the group (hosted by Fred Bear) in New York until my return to Omaha about 7 weeks later, like a dream. I had to pinch myself every day that all this was real."

Here's a photo of Byron Ferguson. I've always said that in my opinion, Byron is a true ambassador of traditional archery the way he has promoted the sport all around the world.

Here is also a little of Byron's history in traditional archery.

" Who, in traditional archery, do you feel influenced you the most and was there someone you would call a mentor."

"Fred Bear and Howard Hill were my inspirations. Mr. Bear for hunting, Mr. Hill for shooting. I credit Jerry Simmons of Jasper Alabama for teaching me how to hunt with the bow and arrow. Before he passed I told Jerry this but he refused credit saying I was already bowhunting when we met. I replied while it is true I was hunting when we met I didn't start finding anything until He taught me how."

Here's another photo of one of these outstanding individuals that carry the torch of Traditional Archery proudly. Again, just a little excerpt of what will go into "The Tradition Lives On" book that will go with the Signature Bow.

Terry Harris

Can you share your most memorable moment you had, such as a hunt or some other event while enjoying this sport.

Answer: "The 3 month bow hunt to Alaska, where we lived in a tent and took care of ourselves, eating mostly what we shot or caught, was a wonderful maturing experience for a 25 year old. We occasionally saw a pilot who checked on us and brought us a few staples, but we never came back to civilation in that 3 month period. Roy case and Art Laha hunted with us for a while before they returned to civilization."

Guys, I'm just scratching the surface. There's 18 more of these outstanding gentlemen with portions of their stories that I'll be posting over the next several months. By the way, Fred Asbell was inducted into the National Archery Hall of Fame just a few years ago.

I plan on posting another photo every week or so over the next few months. This way, each of these signee's will have time to their selves so all can learn a little about them.

Here's a photo of T.J. Conrads, owner of Traditional Bowhunter Magazine. Taking the tradition of our sport all over the world with this great magazine.

Terry Harris

Also, a little piece of his history in traditional archery.

What part of the country are you from and what was your earliest memory introducing you to traditional archery.

Answer: "My father picked up two lemonwood longbows back in the late 1950s and we had those for many years. I remember saving up 25¢ to buy three wooden arrow with those pressed on metal tips. I actually killed a jackrabbit (and my mother's prized Bantam rooster, Jose, with one of those longbows. I fell in love with the bow arrow at a very young age.”

Here's a photo of Monty Browning, I'm gonna try and talk him out of that candle holder.

Part of Monty's traditional archery history.

What was it that inspired you to get into traditional archery?

Answer: "There was no such thing as “traditional archery”, then, it was simply a bow and an arrow. When I shot that first arrow, I was hooked on watching the feathers spin through the arc. I still thrill at that scene today."

Here's a photo of Barry Wensel and a little of his story about traditional archery. Terry Harris

When asked what was it that inspired him to get into traditional archery?

His answer was, " I really wasn’t “inspired” to get into it, I was just handed a small longbow to “play” with. Our dad taught us the basics/safety, etc. and turned us loose, obviously watching us from a distance. Dad was one who always wanted to teach us but then lets us grow and learn from our mistakes, making suggestions along the way."

Folks, if you're interested in winning, what I think will truly be a piece of Traditional Archery history, now's the time.

Tickets are only $5.00 each, and only a limited number will be sold.

These tremendous torch bearers of Traditional Archery that have signed this bow, truly have the character and integrity of someone that truly belongs here. I'm sure we all know someone that also could have made it on this bow, but, in my research, I feel in my opinion, these are some of the very best.

I know this, none of these gentlemen felt that they DESERVED to be on the bow, but felt all the others certainly did, now THATS integrity in my book.

Three signees have already been inducted into the National Archery Hall of Fame, and a fourth will be inducted this coming year, 2018.

Stay tuned, there's so much more to come.

1959 Bob assists in forming the Pope & Young Club, an organization dedicated to developing records for quality game taken with a bow and arrow -- the archery counterpart of the Boone & Crockett records club

1968 Bob is instrumental in forming the national Archery Manufacturers Organization (AMO), an association that develops industry trade standards for measuring bow weight, draw lengths, etc.

Terry Harris

When asked, can you share your most memorable moment you had, such as a hunt or some other event while enjoying this sport. His answer was, "probably my most memorable hunt was a combination hunt for Pronghorn Antelope and Mule Deer in Wyoming and Western Nebraska in 2007. I was fortunate to take a P&Y Pronghorn in Wyoming and then an 8 Point Mule Deer in Nebraska the next week."

A little more info about Steve Turay

When asked what did he think is most important to keep our sport of traditional archery alive for it’s future. His answer was, "we need to remember Traditional Archery is a challenge. Shooting and hunting with a Traditional bow takes dedication, commitment and perseverance. We could all take the "easy way" and shoot a compound or a crossbow. But , that's not who we are".

Terry Harris

When asked what Nail could share the most memorable moment he had, such as a hunt or some other event while enjoying this sport.

But what I will say is the most memorable is all of the Traditional Trade shows that I have attended over the years making friends from all walks of life. Fellow archers to many to mention like Dick Mauch, Wade Phillips, Marv Cochran, Marv Clyncke, Dale Karch, Big Jim, just to many to mention and everyone that is so great to talk with at the shows, and I do mean everyone. Terry Harris

When asked: Can you share your most memorable moment you had, such as a hunt or some other event while enjoying this sport.

His answer was: There were many moments in my 75 years behind the bow but a very important one was when I brought home a stringer of frogs I had shot with my bow along a creek near home. My Dad said to me, " now that you killed em you have to eat em" He showed me how to skin out the legs and fry them in a pan. I remember how the legs jumped and twitched in the pan. As I ate those little frog legs, that was the day I became a bow hunter....I was 6 years old.

His answer was, I was born in Newark, NJ in 1939. During the 2nd World War years, moms would occasionally bring their children to a movie theater to see something called a “matinee” in the day time hours. The movie “The Adventures of Robin Hood”, with Errol Flynn starring and Howard Hill doing all the shooting was something I saw one afternoon with my mom, when I was 4 years old.

"Some thoughts Ken has on traditional archery is that traditional tackle is a challenge that brings many rewards. Stickbows do more than deliver an arrow to a target. They deliver memories…memories of traveling to a hunt, sharing a camp fire with valued friends and family, frosty mornings and succeeding against difficult odds.

Ken has said that at Black Widow they take great pride in what they do. They just don’t build bows , they create adventures."

Here's Bob's signature as well as a little of his traditional archery history.

When Bob was asked, "Who, in traditional archery, do you feel influenced you the most and was there someone you would call a mentor.

Bob's answer was, "In 1969 I became friends with the great Howard Hill and took instruction from him at his retirement home in Vincent, AL. He will get most credit as my mentor."

Folks, I think this important for me to say this.

When I started this endeavor about "The Tradition Lives On" signature bow, I knew in my heart what I believed what this bow meant to me. I first believed it was men LIKE THESE that made this bow important for our traditional archery history.

I've come to realize it is not men like these, it is THESE MEN that have made this bow important for our traditional archery history.

If it weren't for these men, I really feel most of us today wouldn't be having this sport, hobby or even a great part of our daily lives here for us to enjoy.

I know there are others out there that could also have been on this signature bow. I know of three others I tried to get. One declined to be a part of it, another, at the time, was in a nursing home, and one never would respond to my requests to speak with him. I'm also sure there are some that many of you feel should be on the bow.

I started this project last Spring, and with what I know now, I truly feel I have the BEST of those torch bearers in traditional archery still with us today that are represented on this bow

Now, at the time of this writing, I've sold 363 tickets out of 1000. The proceeds, as you know, will be split between a Boy Scout Camp and an organization that works with chronically ill children, both noble institutions.

There are less than three months before I will draw for this bow. Folks, think about what this bow means, who you might pass it down to if you win it and what it might do to help some child.

Even if you say to yourself, "I don't need another bow", help me sell these remaining tickets and even if you don't want the bow, I'LL BUY THE BOW FROM YOU AT WHAT THE BOW WOULD COST YOU IF YOU BOUGHT IT FROM HOWARD HILL ARCHERY COMPANY.

Don't let, what in my opinion, is a piece of our traditional archery history go by you without trying to get it for yourself.

Sincerely, Terry Harris

When asked, "Can you share your most memorable moment you had, such as a hunt or some other event while enjoying this sport."

Jerry's answer was, "I’ve had a couple of really lucky shots in years gone by. One was shooting the head off a bumble bee (in flight) with a broadhead (had a witness). Another shot was a woodchuck at 40 paces, in the eye, with steel blunt (no witness). Glenn St. Charles told me “if you shoot enough arrows in the air, you are bound to hit something sooner or later”.

Dick's signature as well as a little of his traditional archery history.

When Dick was asked if he could share his most memorable moment he had, such as a hunt or some other event while enjoying this sport.

His answer was, "I was lucky being born in Montana in an era where there was very few bow hunters. I ended up getting a 30 inch mule deer at age 17 and a 7 x 7 bull elk at 19. Gene Wensel was the first real bow hunter I ever met when he moved to Hamilton Montana and was a great inspiration to me"

A little of Dale's traditional archery history.

When asked, "Can you share your most memorable moment you had, such as a hunt or some other event while enjoying this sport."

Dale's answer was, "Meeting Fred Bear himself and spending some time talking to him and being in awe of him taking the time to talk to me. He was a very humble and kind gentleman. My BC Moose hunt is number one in my list. There is nothing like hunting in wild land were you are part of the cycle of life."

Here we are folks, the last great torch bearer who has helped to keep traditional archery going for all of us.

Here's a photo of Craig Ekin.

Let me add, when I first spoke of the idea of "The Tradition Lives On" signature bow to Craig, he thought it was a pretty cool idea. When I told him I'd like to be able to use one of his bows to do this and asked what I could get the bow for, Craig didn't hesitate, he donated the bow to me.

I asked Craig to sign the bow and Craig humble said that his name would be on the riser, as he does for all of his bows. This wasn't good enough, in my opinion, Craig's name deserved to be on the limbs along with all the other fine gentlemen that has their names on the limbs as well. Thank you Craig Ekin.
