I heard of this person the tried to string a 60" longbow with a 42" string and the bow broke and he is wondering why the bow broke.

I wonder what the brace height would have been? Bows are constantly pulled to 26 thru 32 inches when people are practicing. I usually shoot for over an hour. Maybe it was already flawed.

I did the math...stringing a 60" longbow with a 42" string would flex the bow the same as being at 27.75" draw with a proper string, i.e a 26" brace height! Obviously, the strain on the limbs would multiply much faster drawing any farther with a 42" string and would quickly overstress the limbs.

When I was in my teens, a local boy bought a 75 pound Herters shorty, less than 48". I was the only whimp that used a bow loader on recurves and since they told me that real men don't need those, I was not about to let them use mine. They were claiming it came with too short of a string, that is why they couldn't get it strung. When they put a fresh stud wall into use, those three real men had no problem at all breaking that brand new bow.

What had me confused is, if they did get the string on it, they were going to need to cut the studs to get the bow off of the wall.

Not surprising. Once while I was roaming through the archery Dept at our local Cabelas, I noticed an employee trying to string a Bear Grizzly for a potential buyer. After he got the bow strung(across his thigh) it was obvious (to me anyways) it was the wrong string. A much too long string which left the brace height at 4-5 inches. He then let the fellow shoot it even after I tried to explain to him that it had to be the wrong string. With no millennial spirit in me I simply walked away.
