I need to work with this bow and see what works. Shot it on 8.75 brace noisey then 9 1/8 still noisey Thats with no silencers.Ialso removed the small bumpbehind the striker plate. They had made the bump out of a little piece of leather. I think it needs to goback in. To late and tired to mess with it now.maybe tomorrow.

Try a new quality string with a couple of Wool puffs. Before I was building my own bows I had a few Black widows.. Mostly TF's and PSA's. Most of then tuned perfect with a 8 3/4" to 8 7/8" brace height. The stock strings are pretty good BUT I like to use aftermarket strings with padded loops, I make my own wool puffs. There are several awesome string makers on this site that can make you a quality string.

8 1/2 Brace height. D97 string, yarn puffs and limbsavers will take care of it.

I either use yarn wraps or the small rubber brush buttons and 1/2 a hush puppy yarn puffs. Gets them all to a dull thud

I bought a Widow that was 75 at my draw. Shot it for about a year and decided I'd drop 10 pounds, ordered another set of limbs. When they came I was excited and anxious to shoot them. Put them on the riser and strung it up. It sounded like .22, not a long a Mag.

After a few shots I came back home and took the bow apart put the limbs back in the box that they came it. As I was doing that I noticed a card that said, "Do not shoot the bow before reading this". On the other side of the card was two yarn silencers. The directions said cut the silencers in half and put one about 8 inches from the spot the string leaves the bow and the other 12 inches. Same on the bottom limb.

Took it out again and it was either quiet or my hearing was damaged from the first couple of shots.

Ever since, I've been doing one better than widow. Three up and three down.

Your brace height is fine.I shot mine at 8 and 3/4 or a tad higher

I would put a custom string on it with wool puffs.I always shot SBD (Silent But Deadly) bowstrings on mine. They made every Widow I have had owned quieter and with less vibration. You should try one.I have had 3 PA Widows.

I've found that 450+ string material does wonders for a Widow.

A good string, good string silencers,

and

if it's a take down, some cork between the limbs & limb pads will work wonders.

Like Rick said about the cork. I had a Greybark years ago. The cork plus loosing that factory string made a world of difference. I think I put beaver balls on the string.

I just use the widow string, always have and it's always worked great. Throw on some silencers and you'll notice a huge difference, anything will do...cat whiskers or wool. A lot of people's noisy bow problem comes from their release as far as I'm concerned. Practice shooting and practice relaxing your release hand. Trust me it isn't the Widows fault.

They are not loud with a B50 string so its the factory D97 string. I also used 450+ and it made a big difference.

Crows bow is a PA one piece.

I would recommend a 8 strand SBD string/wool puffs for your 42 # bow.You will see a difference immediatly!

From: fdp

Crow, nobody can tell you for certain how to quiet YOUR bow. It's cool to listen to folks ideas, etc., but that all.

The noise a bow makes is directly related to the person shooting it. How you hold the bow, how you hold the string, how you release the string, the arrow, and on and on.

It doesn't matter what someone else's brace height is set at, how high their string nock is, where or how many string silenceres there are.

Forget all that and set the bow up for you.

All the talk on here about how "unique" "Traditional archery" is, and how different, and 90% of the people try to make it seem that one set up scenario fits everybody. It doesn't.

From: KyPhil

If i was shooting a recurve with no string silencers and it was loud, the first thing i would do is put string silencers on it, especailly with a D97 string. Then go from there.

From: Archer

Try a sbd string talk to them first they may be able to help. But that being said fdp is pretty right on. It's just advice and your adventure. Good luck. My widows are all whisper quiet. So don't give up.

From: trapperman
Date: 06-Sep-17

When I got mine in April I thought it was real loud also. After the string shot in it seemed to quiet down. Nock tension had a big play in it for me. I run two spider slilencers and a pair of cat wiskers. Set 9in bh.

From: bfisherman11 Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

I like to either wrap the end of the string with yarn or put the felt sticky pads from 3Rivers where the string would slap the limb.

My PSA's are all set to 8-5/8 to 8-3/4. They are not longbow whisper quiet but the critters I've killed with my Widow never seemed to mind the sound as much as the arrow passing through. Ha.

I also use a combination of two spiders and two yarn puffs. That is all I have needed to get my Widows hunting good.

Hope that helps, and Congrats! Bill

Sounds like you guys have silencers all up and down the string. lol. I'd love to see some pics of that if you have any.

From: David McLendon
Date: 06-Sep-17

Quieting a PA is a bit of a challenge, they can be nearly silent but don't typically respond well to the standard issue that most throw at a bowstring. I have owned three of them at one time, each made of different wood and each one was very different requiring variations in silencing method and material. However not a one of them required half a muskrat or beaver's butt or multiple yarn balls. Ditching the 14 strand D97 string is the first good step.

I just made some make shift silencers out of paracord. It is pretty quiet now. Im going to get a sbd string. Already got some beaver balls on the way.

From: bowhunt
Date: 06-Sep-17

Beaver balls are nice and look good. But I dont think they work as well as wool.Been thier done that more than once.Make sure if you use them that you wrap them very very tight around the string. They need to be very snug.Still I would recommend wool.Just have SBD put puffs on if your not sure how to do it.3$ is the cost.

Its easy to make your own puffs once you know how!

8 1/2" brace. wool string puffs, wool yarn bow hush, moleskin on the limb pads... quiet enough for me.

From: jon boy

Get a skinny(8 strand) string. They seem to be a lot quieter and a little faster.

From: Arcobsessed

Widow strings just are plain noisy. Swapped mine out as soon as I got the bow. Just as quiet as it can get since. Widow strings can be dangerous to your hearing. Chuckle!!!

A good string and wool puffs in the sweet spots and they are quiet. >>>----> Ken

x2 what womble said. change out the D97 from Widow to 450+ w/hush puppies and you've got yourself a real quiet widow.
