How much play will the limbs have when they are latched but unstrung? I just bought a green stripe and I have about an 1/8" of play up and down on both limbs?

I wouldn't worry. Once strung they'll be rock solid. I have limbs that slide right out without the locator screws but I hunt with them without issue. Vintage handles matched with newer limbs can lead to fit issues, but Ive never had a set not work. String it and forget it.

That's probably more a limb problem than a riser problem. Are the limbs original with the riser? Regardless, Bear has been making a lot of TD limbs for a lot of years, and there are a fair number of after market limbs around as well. They don't always fit the same, and many don't fit tightly.
I usually put a couple of strips of mole skin on the base of the riser slots where the limbs slip in to solve the problem you're describing. Usually, that's enough. If the gap is really large, I also put strips of moleskin on the bases of the limbs. Have never had to do more than that.

They are all different and one set of limbs which are tight in one riser may be loose in another. I believe the latch bases were cast so the could some tolerance differences. I do have two late 80s brown stripes and every set of limbs i have put in them is tight. I have two green stripes and it varies on them but i noticed that the 70s white tips fit more snug than the older red tips, the ones i have had anyway.

I have a green stripe from 83 that is perfect with the 83 limbs. But the new red tips are sloppy and I can't keep the limbs latched or else there is a very loud creak during the draw. I've waxed and shimmed and can't figure how to eliminate it.
Not a problem, because it give me an excuse to buy a new (modern) riser.

Thanks guys!! The limbs are not original!! Would love to find a set from the same year as the riser. I have always dreamed of having a Bear takedown! I can't wait to take it to the woods!!

I bought my green stripe from Anderson Archery in 1983. The original 65# limbs and the recently bought used 45 pounders have no fitment issues. Fit is solid and no noise when shooting. The originals are Gainesville built and the used ones Grayling.

Mines an '86..the original limbs were somewhat loose so they are moleskin shimmed. My older Grayling limbs all fit perfect with no shimming. I prefer the Grayling white tips.

I have quite a few,some has a snag fit some don't once they are strung there isn't any problem with anyone. Enjoy it it is a great bow and with some good limbs is at the top.
