I am thinking about trying a clicker to use as a trigger.

what clickers are best? are they all about the same or do some shine above the others?

What about set up? any tips to make them hassle free?

Not hassle free. I used one for a day and realized I didn't need it. Klikety klik is the one to use on a trad bow.

If you are concerned about competition, you can use those in RU class. No clicker allowed in the sight window. Oly recurves often use Beiter clickers that mount on the shelf

no competition for me, just working on form

I shoot a limb mounted clicker, and have for several years now. There are a few things a person should understand about a clicker. One, they are like anything you they won't work for you, you have to work for them. You are not going to give yourself an opportunity to learn from them or improve from their use if you don't stick with them. It's pretty hard to lie to yourself with a clicker but there are still issues that can take place with using them. There are other things you can use as a shot trigger, but I think the clicker is the best thing to start with. The first thing I would recommend doing is get rid of the rope and chain they come with and get some of the rope they use to make d loops on compounds. It's extremely durable and stays solid in the bowstring. Give yourself some extra tail on it to begin with because there is a good chance your draw length will extend. I have also hunted with one on my by and have seen zero reason to not do it. I believe the one I currently use is a crick it clicker.

Cowboy has the scoop. The chain has to go.

I used mine in Africa, but I was prepared to shoot without one also. Impala's make whitetails look like they're on drugs. The first one that came into the blind I drew back and clicked. No response. I had taped all side so it wasn't very loud. When it got real cold it wouldn't click at all. I kept my thumb on it to keep it warm.

For that hunt I taped in just below the grip. I was sitting in a blind. For whitetails or out west, I'd put it up near the top limb, because of brush.

I separated the bundles of the bow string and put a loop of the click string through the bundles. A pretty long loop. Then I drew back and the loop starts to close. Enlarge the loop until your at your draw length. Then take the end of the clicker string and put it through the loop, pull tight.

Leave that tag end. As you learn to use it your draw length will lengthen. You'll find an area where it gets hard to make the clicker go off. In that area, the clicker will teach you consistent finger placement on the string. Then you may have to shorten it a tad. As Cowboy states you need a nonstretch material.

After 30 years of archery I never knew what a good release was until I put on a clicker. I think everyone should use one for a while. Compounders wouldn't call us the 20 yd accuracy guys.

Exactly what Cowboy said. I have used one now over 10 years. I use the clicker called the Cricket. I also remove the chain and string it comes with and replace with D loop cord. I mount mine on the upper limb just below the curve of the limb. It takes less cord and I've never had a problem with it set up that way. I hunt deer every year using a clicker and the click doesn't seem to bother them. Some people put mole skin or tape on the clicker to quiet it down. But I don't bother with that. If you try one, give it an honest try. Don't use it for a day or two and take it off. learn to use it, and it will help you. Good luck.......

is the chain noisy or why is D loop cord better?

I've had problems getting to full draw for years, l tried clickers off on for a while. Finally this year I stuck with and what a difference it makes, I've gained about and inche in draw length and have better form with back tension.

I think the biggest problem people have with anything is not putting the time in.

I tried to set one up but something happened.. perhaps I pulled it too far... but it won't click back now... don't know if it's repairable or not.

So, be careful setting it up.. maybe get some advice from someone here that use's one.

The chain will hit your limb and make little dents unless you pad the area well. I remove the chain as Cowboy said. I prefer the Cricket clicker--just like the Clickety Click but shorter so it doesn't cover as much limb area and easier to keep off of the bending area of the limb.

Woodsman, try sticking something of small diameter under the clicker and bend it back in place. I had a friend over darw mine and had the same issues. I used a very small screw driver to bend it back over and it worked.
