Went to the local bow shop to use indoor range yesterday because it was pooring down rain. The shop owner shoots recurve and longbows some but mainly compound. That's what 90% of his business is. Anyway I was shooting and some other guys showed up shooting compound bows. The range is only 20 yards , so I was shooting as tight of groups as them or most of them. Anyway they kept talking about how fast and hard my longbow was shooting . The shop owner came back there and wanted to shoot it. As soon as he shot the look on his face was priceless! He said wow ! This thing is fast. He shot several more times. Then he took it to the chronograph and it said 192 fps. A lot of them had played with traditional gear but not a hole lot. When I left yesterday I had about 15 different guys shooting my bow and a lot of them writing down the maker because they wanted one . Great day at the range with maybe some new comers to our side . My Omega Imperial and Easton Axis Traditional arrows.

My impression is that most compound shooters a just never introduced to traditional bows nor have they ever shot one. When I show my bows and wood arrows to guys, they all want to hold it and remark how nice looking it is. Unfortunately I shoot heavier bows and they can't shoot it but they will watch me shoot. They sure do like the looks of them though. Most see a recurve on the wall in a shop and think "Grandpa's antique bow" and it all ends there. i was die-hard compound until I saw some guys shooting recurves and got hooked.

The funny thing is also that I was the youngest guy there. I'm 37, they were all I'm guessing 45 to 65. A couple of the older gentlemen told me about the bows they shot when they were younger it said those bows would rattle your teeth. They could not believe there were no shock when shooting the bow.

Yeah, the CP guys that I have let shoot my bows always seemed to like them. I don't know how many switched or got into stick bows, but judging by the reactions, I would imagine some did. They closed the shop that I used to shoot at, so I lost track of the guys I shot with.

I would liken your experience to glass guys being introduced to a proper self bow. Most have no idea what a good self bow shoots and handle like.

A lot of compound guys get excited about traditional bows, then lose interest when they don't shoot well right away. Ego plays a role and there are usually plenty of egos in any archery shop (I generally try to avoid those types anyway).
I try to give new folks enough pointers to get them shooting decently without sounding like a "know it all" or taking the fun out of it. Sometimes its a challenge to hold back my enthusiasm though. - John

That is awesome. I think the best thing about traditional archery is how beautiful the equipment is - your bow is no exception.

My Buddy and I went to a 2 day archery event locally a few weeks back, and we walked in with our 66" longbows, and got more stares, from compound guys, like they never knew that guys even shot longbows. set em on the picnic tables, and everybody was picking them up, and asking questions...think we converted a few that day

I remember along time ago I met up with some old high school buddies at our hunting camp and I hadn't seen many of them for several years anyways I was hunting with a new Crow Creek black feather bow and we all starting getting our bows out to shoot off the back porch and they all was shooting compounds I think it was when very hoyt came out with there new fancy riser anyways I hunt my longbow up and they laughed alittle and said hey if you can't afford a good compound buddy we'll all chip in and get you one !!! Ha I said REALLY you are swell but I'll stick with my cheap wood longbow it only cost about 700 bucks lol but they had no idea that traditional bows was so nice and I took the biggest buck that week an 8pt about 17" on the 3rd day lol

Some of the CP shooters at our club have never shot a traditional bow. It's almost like they're afraid they won't be able to be a good shot on the first shot. Just about anyone that show's even the slightest interest in my bow, I'll offer to let them try a bow I keep in the trunk of my car. The look on their face when they see how simple and fun it is, is worth my time.

They were probably stunned by how light it was in weight and the fact that they didn't have to tighten an arm muscle just to hold it up!

I don't think wheel guys typically have the necessary back muscles.
Hand them a 60# longbow and they sing the blues.

That's great Joey and yeah, this stuff is FUN!
I've hunted with a couple buddy's, for years. They shoot CP bows and in all the time we've hunted together I haven't been able to get them to shoot my bow. You'd think trad bows had the plague the way they avoid them. They've always told me that they don't have the time to practice with a traditional bow, which I know to be bull. They practice with their CP's and admit that they don't really enjoy it, but It's a necessary evil if they want to hunt. I tell them how much I enjoy shooting a trad bow, but they don't want to hear it. I've never understood their attitudes toward traditional archery and I know they'd love it, if they'd just give it a try.

Monkeyball, I've been looking at them for a couple years. I'm going to need to drop down in poundage soon and if we ever get out from under the financial rock that fell on us a few years ago, I'm thinking I'll probably get one.

Craig I have looked at his bows but never in hand. With building homey88 a bow right now (should be fine with it this weekend) I hope my bow is at least near the same level. I feel omega bows are lower priced because of a single core and oak riser. Low cost woods and single lamination but still performs. That's all a guy needs.
I want to shoot Mike's omega bow when he comes for the Timberstick I'm building him.

I've gained the respect of several CP shooters at some clubs. Several times I may be the only traditional shooter and I always get stares when I walk up with longbow in hand. They were use to seeing some guys shooting traditional but not gals. I was on the way to a shoot in Tennessee several months ago and stopped to get gas and something to eat. I had a "Bowhunters are Awesome" shirt on and a guy said "I like your shirt....do you shoot a crossbow?" Hit me wrong, so I figured I would have some fun. I said "no, too easy". One of them said "good, a gal that knows how to shoot a compound". Well, it was game on at that point. I said "no, bows with training wheels are boring and also too easy." I shoot a longbow and I'm on my way to a tournament now." After they picked their jaws up off the floor, one of them said "Dang woman" the other ones said "I think I'm in love." Upon which I just winked at them and said "keep practicing." Hahahaha

Interesting, I would be afraid of limb twist. He has out down from what I hear though.
I like the heavy grain in oak. Never thought of using it in a riser. I may try that.

I meant to add in my post that I have no ill feelings toward CP bows, or the people that shoot them. I've always prefered traditional archery, but we're all in this together and there's power in numbers.

I was in our local archery shop Saturday picking up some feathers(yes, he still carries them). Now this is a large shop, 30yd indoor range, Techno-Hunt, full Hoyt pro shop, compounds, crossbows and a surprising line of traditional bows and accessories. Hoyt, Stalker and Samick. While the vast majority of his business is compound bows and setup, believe it or not, there were more guys, and kids, out on the range shooting stick bows than compounds by a wide margin.

192 fps with a 9.36 gpp arrow is not really fast with a 29" draw. I am assuming that you measure the draw at the back of the bow and not to the deepest part of the grip like in AMO definitions. There were bows which shot around 190fps+ with a 26.25" draw length to deepest part of grip=28" AMO over 10 years ago with a 10 gpp arrow. Is it decent? Yes. Good middle field.
