Wanting to make a riser to go with the dark brown glass I won in the drawing here from KennyM. I thought lighter wood might look better with the dark glass. Unfortunately all I have is one wormy (Carp bait) Marblewood block. Just not sure what this would look like or how much it may be effected in strength. I have several pieces of dark wood like Walnut, cherry, Mahogany, Purpleheart, and a few more small ones. Would like a few opinions please. Thanks

Making a riser/bow is a lot of work. I'd start with a good piece of wood.

Wouldn't be my choice, but then I think dark risers go well with dark glass. 8^)

Maybe if you could thin down epoxy enough for the wood to seal up that chunk may work. Maybe cut it into pieces and do a "butcher block riser and put some dark work strips from say Walnut to add strength. Just a couple thoughts.

A few examples of some stash I have on hand. On the left is the Marblewood, most of the worms didn't make it all the way through. I even got some mystery wood in the center. I may do some splicing or just order a new block of something.

"Butcher block riser, I like that. I'm thinking maybe I could use a good half of it and do some splicing.

I always fancied the I beam construction, makes a sharp looking riser IMO

I wouldn't have thought that the Bubinga would go with brown glass, the piece I have (center) is a little red tinted. Got a picture? I did use it on a Green glass bow. I have done Ibeam risers also Clay but need a thicker block. Still pondering. Here's the Green glass with Bubinga.

Personally I like the character of the worm holes. I've got a piece of mesquite crotch wood that has holes and will eventually become a riser. Just be sure to stabilize it. Maybe inject with epoxy and/or splice hard wood between. John

I have a couple chunks of California Pepper tree wood that looks like that Mesquite. What Stoner is doing to his wood is what we did in class to make decorative boxes from the Pepper wood. We had enough epoxy on some pieces it looked like the finish.

Don't know the origin of the Marblewood. I was in a woodcraft store and found it in a big box of clearance pieces. Paid about $2.00 if I remember right.

That does look good Mgerard. My Bubinga appears a darker color, the glass I have is darker also. I did a couple bows a few years ago with that color brown on belly and black on back. The riser was about as confusing on one of them. Doesn't show the brown belly but here is a riser pic.

My thinking today in what few minutes I had was to use about an inch of the dark Rosewood at the bottom and about an inch of Marblewood on top, you can see the line I drew to cut off. I may add a piece of red, black, or white phenolic between, not sure on that.

Just for opinions.... Would you add a piece of phenolic between the two layers which would be about the deepest part of the grip? If so which color or combo of? I got red, black, & white.

Even my this season hunting bow has white overlays, I must have got stuck! So it's black or red! Thanks throwback. I'm just a backyard piddler, I normally only build two per year. One for me and one for my hunting buddy. This is KennyM's fault for doing the giveaway on glass.
