Low key, but fun-filled!

How’s that for our description of the upcoming September 9-10, 2017, “Strictly Sticks Traditional Archers” 2-Day shoot?!!

Yes, The Crew has a pretty full set-up planned, and it looks like there will be all-kinds of Archery shooting possibilities, for EVERY type of Traditional Archer, young or seasoned, experienced or new-shooter!

A hillside’s worth of 3D targets for our regular marked course; our unmarked Hunter course (where only the two people setting up the course know how many targets there’ll be!); a “Hoot ‘N Holler” course; and introducing a “block target” course SPECIFICALLY FOR BLUNT-TIPPED ARROWS (no field points or broadheads…bring some blunts!!!!).

Plus, a long-distance “50/50” target to test you. The “Fred Bear Challenge” held Saturday evening inside the club, with competitions for ages 16 and younger, then for ages 17 and older. The “Eagle Eye Competition”, with ongoing qualifying on Saturday and Sunday and the shoot-off at 1 PM Sunday.

And the kitchen will be active, too, with Breakfast and Lunch both Saturday and Sunday, and the Traditional Spaghetti Dinner around 5 PM Saturday (before the “Fred Bear Challenge”)…..all reasonably priced and satisfying.

Plus, there’s a limited amount of primitive camping space for folks who wish to arrive Friday and camp until Sunday, in the parking area edges, and under a few building structures if needed. There’s a shower room, and restrooms that will be open. And enough dead/scrap wood around the hillside for those welcomed campfires.

“Strictly Sticks Traditional Archers” knows we aren’t Denton Hill, or Baltimore, or even a few other more regional events. But, we’re not really trying to be. We’re “Strictly Sticks”, a unique little happening tucked away in Alverton, Pennsylvania. Laid-back, low-key, fun-filled. And all depending on if YOU decide to visit us!

This year, we’ll be trying a few “Announcement Schedule Boards” for folks to see at-a-glance the whats and whens things will be happening, to “tweak-up” the original flyer that’s been posted online and found at various local Archery venues. And, we’ll trying out a few other events, if all things (including the weather) are co-operative. You may even find yourself shooting from clubhouse property you’ve not been on before!

So, what’s it cost, you ask? How’s this sound: Ages 17-older, $10 per day or $15 all weekend; Ages 12-16, $5 entire weekend; Ages 11-under, FREE all weekend!

As noted above and on the flyer, “Sticks” has an inside air-conditioned building, restrooms and a shower room, and enough chairs both inside and outside to just sit-down and “take it all in”. The beverage coolers will be stocked with water or soda and will be available throughout the day.

Does this sound like YOUR kind of Archery 2-day weekend? If so, then we humbly invite you to stop over with your bow, arrows, family and friends, and make it what YOU want the weekend to be!! Once you are here, it’s all up to you!!

The Crew will be awaiting, and welcoming!!

That some good news Randy, thanks

You're most welcome, Jeff! Really looking forward to seeing any or all of your crew, and all the other friends who stop by! AND THANKS AGAIN FOR FIXING "MY TEMPORARY APARTMENT" AT THE CLUBHOUSE, FROM THE GHOSTLY FLICKERING LIGHTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From: Shortdraw
Date: 11-Aug-17

Looking forward to the event Randy! You guys do make it FUN!!! Laid back... I don't know. Still trying to get the kinks out from the "lim-bow" shooting position from last year... lol! Will the "nuclear" mascot be somewhere on the course? Will there be the famous "hunt'n" course this go-a-round? You can't beat the value for a late summer tune-up before hunting season. If you don't walk away with confidence after this shoot then you may not belong in the woods this season. Let the games begin! PS, you may hear banjos late at night but don't be scared. <')))><

Randy, All I did was fix the lights. The ghost are still there bad karma to disturb them;)

From: Shortdraw

Jeff, is Randy's apartment the space above the storage room? Some folks claim to have heard "voices" coming from there. <')))><

PM Scott.

From: HARRY CARRY
Date: 11-Aug-17

Hawkeye, I'll do my best not to disturb ANY ghosts, or Voices that don't belong to me. ("Where's the Greasegun??" echoing from both near and far....)

Yes, Shortdraw, Nuclear Teddy is "still out there" to our knowledge, unless the DEP and MIB came to take him away. But as long as Nuclear Creek flows through the valleys of Alverton and East Huntingdon Township, there'll be a good chance a cousin or two of his might just take to the woods "Steve Earl/Copperhead Row" style, so keep yer eyes peeled. ANd if ya think something might be looking at you, iffn you find yourself on a shaded, dark part of the course, with a banjo pluckin off in the distance, you'll probably be right!! It'll be good to see ya there, Shortdraw... (And yes, the Hunter Course will be there...don't ask me where the targets will be or how many....I get lost easily, and those targets they use confuse these color-blind eyes...!!!!!!!! They'd find me over at Scotty Field, in the middle, mumbling incoherently!!!!!)

And, as you said, "let the games begin"....

Sounds like a real good shoot to attend, hope to make it.

From: HARRY CARRY

Hey there and Howdy, Longbow Dave! We create our monthly single-day shoot schedule shortly after the 2-day is over. THe sportsmens club gives us the winter months, while the "open Archery" group gets the spring and summer months. Our schedule normally runs around the 3rd Sunday of November, December, January, February, then the "Archer Appreciation" day in March. We look at The Crew's availability, work schedules, the sportsmens club's agenda, all that, before we can create the schedule. But, we do get the word out ASAP when a schedule is created. I'll keep ya in the loop, Dave!

Wapiti--M.S.: we try our best! Sometimes, we surprise ourselves (!), and sometimes we learn...to do something differently!!! Our main goal is simply to provide a weekend getaway that's Traditional Archery based. Once our friends and guests arrive, the interactions begin, groups of friends join up, and the arrows start flying. Most first-time attendees quickly meet up with regulars, and are invited to join in. Folks shoot as much as they want, or as little as they want, when they attend ANY "Sticks" event. The only "competitions" would be a particular course (the block course)at a certain time frame. There's also the "Fred Bear Challenge", which is more of a public display of how folks do when LOTS of people are watching!! We don't make it where critical judges are needed, or people are going around making sure score cards are kept a certain way!

As we say, "Low Key", and "Fun"! Thanks for considering joining us!!

You are right Red, I don't want to miss it.... I'll be at Letchworth state park, NY, girlfriend maintinence.....

From: HARRY CARRY
Date: 18-Aug-17

UPDATE!

The sportsmens club obtained a "whole bunch" of "NEW TO US" targets, from an event held at Seven Springs this past weekend. SOOOOOOO, "Sticks" attendees will be seeing some new "faces" out on the course. (OR YOU WON'T BE, DEPENDING ON HOW WELL SOME OF THOSE REALISTIC SHOT PLACEMENTS ARE!!!!! Heheheheh)!!!

ALSO: for those who knew "Saint" George Porterfield, one of the early "Sticks" founders, well, a few years before George's passing, he gave "Sticks" a contraption...totally homebrewed...that chucks aerial disks into the air, for "flu flu" shooting. A couple of the mechanically minded daredevils from The Crew fired George's creation up last night at the club, and good golly Miss Molly, we have a new toy!!!!! A little bit of tweaking, a few welds here and there, a handful of new Bungees, and actual UL-approved wiring will have the contraption, which we think we will now call "Saint George's Guillotine" (or something similar), up and ready for some fun at the 2-Day shoot.

So, BRING FLU-FLU arrows!! Bring BLUNT TIP arrows. Bring field and target tip arrows. Keep the broadheads at home....at least for a few more years!!

Oh, you ask: what will "Sticks" be doing with some of the old 3D targets and target pieces? We will either be selling them, or auctioning them, or both...at the 2-Day shoot !!! Might be the time to get some pieces to create your own "post apocalypse" 3D critter, for your own personal shooting enjoyment!!!

That's the latest! Stay tuned.....

Just a refresh/bump up...

From: Stew
Date: 24-Aug-17

Randy, working on flu flu's for Emily and myself. Did you get your hat done Sunday night?

From: HARRY CARRY
Date: 24-Aug-17

Stew, my goal was simply to get the hat on stage, where the main "Performer" would see it! I talked with all the security folks BEFORE the show, and they were all cool. They thought I wanted it autographed, and I responded "I'm 55. I don't ask ANYONE for their autograph!!! After the song about the famous Archer and Bowmaker (!!) the lead security nodded to me, I approached the stage, and perfectly tossed it right in front of the main person!! BUT, the BASS player came over, and kicked it to the edge of the stage, where it sat until the show was over. In the teardown, it got lost, and the main person didn't get it. (At least I don't think he did. A crewmember could have found it after, and given it to him. That's what I'm hoping....)

BUT: at least East Huntingdon Archery was represented at the show, if even for a fleeting moment!!

It was good to see you there, Stew!

ANd very glad you and Emily will be able to attend the 2-Day shoot!

This is the time I start getting nervous about the event, simply because I worry probably too much!!!!! From all indications and responses, though, it sounds like it will be a great "reunion" of many old friends, which I am totally looking forward to. ANd meeting new friends yet met...!!

Sounds like a Great White Buffalo might appear? Only the spirits know. <')))><

From: HARRY CARRY
Date: 24-Aug-17

Shortdraw, you have no idea how frazzled I'd be if a "Great White Buffalo" would walk through those doors Saturday or Sunday morn!!

HOWEVER, I AM..ATTEMPTING....to find a few stuffed critters at the local thrifts and yardsales that are related to the BUFFALO family. But they just don't make a lot of oddball stuffed animals!!! I have seen a stuffed cow.....!!!

I could kick myself when I passed up 2 lifesize stuffed panthers at the sale the Synagogue intown a couple years ago; I kept looking at them and looking at them, and they were still there later in the day when I went back. They asked if I was getting them "for your grand kids (!!)", and I just smiled. THey said a price, but I declined, and said something like "they would really be used as toys", which garnered the question: "You won't be using them to train dogs, would you?" I replied....truthfully....to the horror-sticken looks of the crew. THey decided that they would not sell them to me...!!!!

I do know there's an ape in the back of my Jeep, been there for a couple days, that's going to find himself on a tree out on one of the "blunts" courses. I have him propped up, looking out the window. Drivers and kids smile and point.

I'm hoping one or two of them might be Archers, thinking like I do.....

ANd I'm hoping the stuffed ape doesn't catch on, to his fate.....

See ya in a couple weeks!

From: Red Beastmaster
Date: 25-Aug-17

It wouldn't be the first time an ape ended up in the back seat!

I didn't know Greensburg had a HOV lane HC? Is it properly secured? Hope a rookie officer doesn't give you a hard time at a DUI check point between now and the event. We'd have to have a special shoot to get ya out of jail. :) <')))><

See yinz Saturday.

From: HARRY CARRY
Date: 25-Aug-17

stickhunter: we get the weekend that the sportsmen's club OKs for us. They have other things going on during the summer, and the original weekend....the June weekend from years ago....that got reassigned to the slingshot group. Good luck on the elk hunt, though, and for the heck of it, shoot at a stump when nothing's around, just to say you "shot with Sticks"!

Shortdraw: with all the antennas and numbers on my jeep, I get waved to by rookie officers. The only HOV lane is at the local Sheetz....

Bob H: Banjo, Mrs. Banjo, Trad-freak, and Jon-O will be heading down Sunday. They/we were all going to ride down Saturday, but they got called for weekend work, and I got called for work around the homestead. Sunday wasn't going to be a go for me, so I'm gonna miss the Seneca shoot altogether. I like that shoot.... I'm going to try to get a handful of Sticks flyers to either Scott or Jon, for when they head over Sunday.

Shoot well, and hope I get to see yinz in September...

Pretty cool camping Sat night. Might be a Three Dog Night!

Really glad the annual shoot was moved to Sept. Most summer shoots are a sauna and too hot to really shoot much. Looking forward to airing them out in comfortable cool weather.

From: HARRY CARRY
Date: 06-Sep-17

All of our collective fingers and toes are crossed for some decent weather....

Just a note or two:

Bring BLUNT TIPPED ARROWS, and maybe a few FLU-FLUs. We're using a new kind of target material on one of the courses. And the Flu-Flus will be for "Saint George's Guillotine", which if it co-operates, we'll have up and running. (We really miss Saint George....)

Also, one of the courses may be a bit more realistic as far as traversing. We used 2 quads last evening to literally run down a course. Totally workable, no evil hills, but it won't quite be the greens of a USGA golf course! REALISTIC HUNTING SCENARIOS AS ONLY "STRICTLY STICKS" COULD CREATE!!

Always different: that's "Strictly Sticks"!

Wojo: no schedule yet. After each year's 2-Day weekend, we look at "help" commitments, the Sportsmen's club schedule, all that. Just keep the same gist of weekends in mind, that we've been using for years. It's been roughly the 3rd Sunday of November through March....

Thank You, Scott/Shortdraw, for being a part of this great weekend. ANd thanks to the MANY Leatherwallers and PA Bowsiters, and bunches of other non-computer folks....109 folks in total...for making this weekend's event one of the FUNNEST we've had in years. I know there were some Leatherwallers who attended, but we were not able to attach names to "handles" here.

If you did attend, our thanks go to you for taking the time to see what "Strictly Sticks Traditional Archers" is all about! We hope we met some of your expectations!

We do know that by 7:30 AM Saturday morning, a half hour before the "official registration time of 8 AM" (!!!!!), we had 4 states represented: Virginia, West "By God" Virginia, Ohio, and PA. If there were folks from other states, I apologize for not recognizing that whilst I was at the registration table all weekend.

Please know that EVERYONE who attended made the shoot as great as it was.

With our friends, both old and new, we would not be "Strictly Sticks"!

Aloha & 73! Randy aka HARRY CARRY, registration table guy, and guy with the "Grand Poobah" hat Saturday eve...
