This picture was taken about 3 weeks ago. This field is planted in sainfoin. The deer largely ignore the alfalfa to get at this stuff. They stay in this field,24/7,all Summer long. The eat and sleep there, that's it.There were about 35 bucks in this group but there were other, smaller groups and a few does, scattered throughout.
They get plenty of water from the irrigation pivots, without having to move. The ground outside the irrigated fields is powder dry.

""Farming with Sainfoin | Legume Plus legumeplus.eu/farming-sainfoin Sainfoin is a silage or hay crop that can also be grazed. It is drought-resistant, needs no nitrogen fertiliser, does not cause bloat and is a natural anthelmintic.""

I'm no expert but when it was planted, about 8-9 years ago, that it has a higher sugar content than alfalfa. There are elk and some other whitetails and a few mule deer, coming out of the canyons at night to feed on it.The deer that stay in the sainfoin are safe from mountain lions, which is a good thing. Those using the canyons are putting themselves at risk.It seems like all the biggest bucks stay in the field.

Reminds me of a late wet summer a few years ago. The barley in my little honey hole got swathed lots of rain after that so the farmer couldn't harvest ended up rotting underneath. The deer would walk through soybeans and pass up acorns to get to this stuff. I think they were getting drunk off the stuff lol. Some fun hunts and big bucks seen in that spot.

"This stuff makes a guy want to get home and practice!" Are you freaking kidding me???? It makes me want to bag the east and get right the heck back out to Montana where I should be!!! Blow this popcorn stand, can the job...go back out west. I've probably only seen half that many nice bucks in NY all my life here (30 years of it anyway, when I lived here), much less at one time in the same field!!! Why did I ever leave???

In montana whitetails habitat is scarce, mainly along rivers which is mostly where hay is grown. So seeing a field with that many deer is not that rare, especially in winter. But what is rare is seeing deer live in the fields like the do in alot of sainfoin fields. It's mostly just a tease tho since most ranches' river bottoms are leased by outfitters or are pay to hunt. I used to hunt the Snowcrest ranch along the Ruby river but once Ted Turner bought the gland along the river you have to go thru his hunting company.

Not really that rare as you say. Drove through the Madison Valley last fall from Virginia City to Island Park ID starting in late afternoon and all the fields had dozens of deer. All private, yes, but access for one bowhunter must be somewhat easy. Used to be. I got to hunt the Sun Ranch for goats once. They told,me I,was, the, first guy they let hunt there in a long time. And I saw an enormous mulie buck, probably 20 points inc. stickers and junk, laying in the fog in the middle of the wide open range. Deer season not open yet. Got my first speedgoat that day. Many open fields Ive seen there contained dozens of whitetails, along the Shields, and down by the Bighorn confluence with the Yellowstone. Now lots of whities in the forested western MT too, and Idaho mts.
