My brother in law,LWer overandunder, bought the entire collection of 1957 world champion OK Smathers' archery gear from his widow when she was having a moving sale. When he got tired of sorting bows, arrows and gear, he gave up and gave me a trash barrell full of arrows. I have sorted them ,sort of. The barrel contained an out of sight - out of mind treasury of arrows of a champion archer who never got around to refletching, repainting, replacing a nock, etc. There were 14 dozen altogether, and I have posted an ad in the classifieds for most of the aluminum and woodies. But I thought I'd share these goodies. For starters, four competition flight arrows, double tapered, tiny swaged bullet nose points and aluminum nocks, and tiny slots at the tail to insert razor blades or other thin, brittle vanes.

I have actually owned one of these that I inherited from a more senior archer but I shot it at frogs and such...50 years ago. A splined and tapered bludgeon arrow, 32" long, with a cap made from cow horn sanded to shape and a home-made nock fashioned from iron wood wedged into the cedar and the ends of the fletching secured with tiny red thread. Marked "P. Vandederpel, Lang-Munt 25- GERT"

Finally, a handy little marked dowel to measure arrows with the nock against the ground...the markings are 5/16" longer than actual.

I did a google search and "Lange Munt 25 - Gent "is an address that is now a clothing shop on a narrow street in Gent, Belgium.

The big blunt I believe those were called popping J arrows for shooting a fake J bird attached to a wire some 25 ft up bd

I wonder how OK Smathers of western North Carolina got hold of of a Popping J arrow labeled by a fellow in Belgium?

Thanks for taking the time and effort to share. Love seeing historical items like that and those things are excellent.
