Not sure how it is for other purposes but it does make a nice bow. This is my Ancient Spirits Kadiak, with a lot of curly maple in the riser and as the veneers.

The veneers are stained dark near the tips which makes the wood look very different. And also shows it takes stain well. I would guess though the density range for maple is considerable so it all depends on the individual maple you are able to access. Maple trees here in Alberta do not grow very much in a year and my guess is they are a lot harder than trees that grow quicker in more hospitable climates. I know the maple trees in my late grandfathers yard are all least as old as I am at age 65.

Box, have you used regular maple, hard and/or soft for making box calls before? I'm just wondering which would be the better tone wood.

Highly figured wood requires care with hand and power tools that straight grained wood doesn't. It's a lot more prone to tear out, so in many instances, sanding tools are more prudent than cutting tools.

Aniline dyes really add depth to the curl, almost 3d looking.

A birdseye call would look cool too.

yes,, curly maple will make a nice box call,, a lot of callmakers use this wood for box calls,, box or paddle, it works. just watch the grain on the board. I use fancy maple , very nice grain patterns on the wood. even worm holes and knots in the board. if you use a very hard wood for a box , try to use a softer wood for a paddle.. hope that helps,,,,,,,,,

Red maple tends to show more figure but is softer. I don't know if your calls would work better with soft or harder wood. Both seem to take stain well but I have only worked it for knife handles. Ken >>>---->

I used pine , cedar, walnut on boxcalls. Then used a hard wood (oak) for paddle/striker. I'm sure maple would be fine.

One suggestion would be to make one side of the call thicker. Thin & thick sides makes for two different tones. John
