This is for people who work in leather or just know about it. My question is what ounce/weight (thickness) of leather for arm guards and a good place to buy.Thank you.

Not sure of your local area, but Tandy leather in the Dallas Ft. Worth area normally has good quality leather. It's a bit costly, but good stuff.

Tandy is all over the map. There is also Weaver Leather supply online. If there's a Tandy Store near you, they have a scrap box they toss all sorts of bits and pieces into, cheap supply for an armguard size piece.

It kind of depends on how much protection you need and whether you want to line it. 8-10 oz. is getting up in to belt and holster range. 6 oz.is plenty for me especially if I want to add a deer skin or felt lining. 6 oz is 3/32 10 oz is 5/32 Tandy's is 10 minutes away from me so I don't shop around. If you have to order, measure a couple of leather things it will give you a better idea. I usually purchase a double shoulder or a shoulder at least. That will give you a little variation to pick what you want for a project. 5 - 6 oz and 8 -to- 10 shoulders cover most things. You can pick exactly what you want in smaller pieces. If you can go there it gives you a better idea to look at what you want.>>---> Ken

Depends on how many you want to make too. If only one or two you could take your pattern to a place like Tandy and probably purchase odd pieces large enough for your project.

I had a small leather shop in Michigan that had a bin of scraps when you walked in the front door. The shop worked on all my biker leather and fixed shoes, holsters, coats, etc. Find a small shop, those guys are always willing to help. Second choice would be Tandy. John

Harness. Shops are a good place to find leather, they will also make quivers and knife sheaths for your old knives.
