Jim made me a yew self bow a few years back. It shot great and was beautifully made. I spent an hour or so at his place in Missoula on my way up to Ronan, MT. We talked bows and he showed me his shop and large inventory of stock bows. You won't meet a nicer guy or find a better self bow.

He is a great guy and one of the best.
I camped close to him at this past Moses Lake Rock Shoot and his great laughter had me smiling all weekend.

I'll be there at the jamboree to see him. Yes make a bow there it's a life time experience and you'll come away with a bow that will mean this most. Rooty

Blackhawk said it. Jim's laugh is a delight-and it's so infectious because it makes you know how happy he is-and how happy you should be, just to be in the same place! He's a heck of a bowyer-and, I think, a heck of a man. I hope to be with him at the Flight Nationals this September...it'll be a joy.

I've purchased and traded Jim for a couple of his bows and he's helped me make a few of my own. He is good friends with a couple custom bowyers in the area as well. His self bows are as good as they get. He can build several in a DAY with aged staves that are ready to go.
His wood working skills are second to none as he has a background as a cabinet maker. The amount of wood he can move with his hand tools will blow you away. Jim's handles are a very unique design and I can usually spot those at a glance. Absolutely no sanding or file marks with narrow, flawless tips. Most self bow guys stop a few steps short of the level he builds to.
He's built thousands of bows......He used to build them while he was an overland truck driver with simple hand tools braced against his leg. If you have a chance to learn from him at the jamboree, you'd better take the opportunity. He's good buddies with Jim Neaves (Centaur Longbows) and Dan Toelke (Montana Bows) who both started as self bow guys themselves. They gift bows to each other and admire one another's work.
I've gathered bow materials for him over the years and a couple years ago I cut some green ash while in eastern Montana ice fishing. Beautiful wood with very few knots but the bows were rather weak between 30 and 40 pounds. He built the one on the left and I built the wider limb design on the right. I'm preparing to sinew back each of them and see if they get stronger and snappier. We shot each of them and Jim simply gave me back the one he made. Like others have said, very nice man that is willing to teach and share his knowledge.
