Afraid we will not go to Comptons as planned, weather forecast for 80% rain :(

From: Woodeye
Date: 13-Jun-17

That's what is hold me back also - at least at this point in the planning phase. Northern Wisconsin is my other option for the weekend and it doesn't look much better.

I'd HATE to end up staying home and doing yard work this weekend!

From: Ron LaClair Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 13-Jun-17

I just checked and it says 60% chance but it changes daily. I've changed plans because of forecasted rain and it changed to no rain.

The saying is if you don't like the weather in Michigan then just wait a minute.

I'm 3 hours north of Compton's. Possible severe weather forecast for Weds and Thursday Scattered rain forecast after that. There has been interesting weather events in the past but it adds to the adventure.

It is an awful long way for us to come if the weather suck.

We had a heck of a huge storm roll in last night, big dark clouds, big wind. I tucked the potted plants in for safety....don't water the garden...bottom line it didn't rain, and the moon was so bright at 2 am it woke me up....we will all be in together at Compton, it will be a great time a little rain only adds to the challenge. See ya there.

From: Mpdh
Date: 13-Jun-17

If it rains maybe the temps will go down some. I wouldn't mind being out in the rain for a while, instead of this heat.

I would not rush to decide. The forecast isn't for a washout of Compton (not Comptons plural or Compton's possessive ). As mentioned already, the forecast is just that and changing.

Compton's "location" for the purist. It is a long way to travel for you, but a special event:>)

From: Ron LaClair Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Berrian Springs is near the big lake so the weather is not very predictable. If it rains a little and you're made of sugar, better stay home. Man up...I'll see you there :)

From: Bodark Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

The storm may come the big tent might fall but arrows will fly See you all there coming from KY Gary

From: elk nailer Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Just splash and dash showers. Wood chips are down and targets are set. No big storms predicted.

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 13-Jun-17

Some years ago I stood on the porch of the lodge at Denton Hill while a tornado passed about eight six to eight miles to the northwest of us. We thought the vendor tent was going to go airborne, but alas it stayed. The shoot went on then after the excitement passed. Weather can happen even on a calm forecast so if you can get there...get there.

From: Skeets
Date: 13-Jun-17

It's too early to tell for sure what the weather will be. 3 days ahead is more accurate. Wait until tomorrow. The good thing about Compton is that any variation of west wind comes off Lake Michigan which is about 64 degrees right now. So the temperature is usually cooler.

I suppose ya'll would cancel your huntin trip if you thought it was gonna rain a little. You can only get so wet, go and have fun.

From: TrapperKayak
Date: 13-Jun-17

Good thing you guys don't live in the Cascades. You'd only shoot 3 mos a year. ;)

From: mgerard Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Who hunts or shoots in severe thunderstorms? That's the concern here.

From: YH2268 Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 13-Jun-17

In all truthfulness, I hope that any of the severe weather in the forecast bypasses the grounds at Compton, and everyone that is going has a safe and fantastic weekend.

From: THarris
Date: 13-Jun-17

Let me say that the weather forecast for nearly all week gave a 60% on Friday, 80% on Sat & Sun for the Howard Hill SE Classic.

It only rained, albeit hard, on Friday afternoon for about 20 minutes and never rained at all on Sat & Sun.

See y'all that'll make it there.

Terry Harris

From: Gvdocholiday
Date: 13-Jun-17

I had called the wife last Friday to discuss the possibility of cancelling due to heat and rain forecast.

We said heck with it...rain is rain.

The tent and gear are packed in the trailer and ready to head 3hrs south. If we have any prolonged rain, a couple of board games are packed to pass the time.

As long as it's dry when pitching the Kodiak Canvas tent...I'll be g2g.

From: THarris
Date: 13-Jun-17

I agree with Ron, 40% Thurs. (am), 60% on Fri. & Sat and 20% 0n Sun. That's an improvement from this morning.

The weather is constantly changing and I know personally how weather forecasts can affect travel decisions.

All anyone can do is check as close to the days of the event as possible and decide then.

Pappy, with the Twin Oaks Classic has faced more than his fair share of bad forecasts and most of the time, it's been much better than predicted.

The forecast will be totally different by Friday. Worst case a rain shower rolls thru, it happens. Compton is well prepared for rain. It will not be a all day soak, think positive. I will be there for sure rain or shine. What if you don't go then weather turns out to be just fine?

From: moosehunter Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Bought my airline tickets, going no matter rain or shine and plan to have a darn good time regardless. Leatherwall attendees let's meet up!

From: Pappy
Date: 14-Jun-17

What Terry said, all I look at the forecast for is to see what the weather MIGHT be setting up. Other than that I don't worry much about it.Only one knows for sure what it will do and it sure isn't the weather forecasters. Pappy

From: TrapperKayak

I read this and wonder how some of the hard core trad archery shooters and hunters could be concerned about the weather. A possibility of rain? When did that ever stop anyone before? Thunderstorms? Severe storms and wind? Big whoop, just go inside if that happens. To not show up at a shoot because it 'might rain' sounds so out of character on here IMO. You fletch might get wet... Um, they make vanes for that. :) For those here that aren't concerned that it might rain, that sounds like the norm for archers and hunters to me.

From: Skeets
Date: 14-Jun-17

Right now there's a 40% chance of thunderstorms. That's 60% chance that it will not. If your arrows shoot bare shaft it won't matter if your feathers get wet!

I will add. Always use some caution with the weather. There was one year when there really was a bad storm which blew the vendor tent down.

From: Jon Stewart
Date: 14-Jun-17

It's Michigan and the weather changed a minute ago. Our big Lake dictates the weather not some weatherman.

A few years ago the weather was real bad and one of the vendors lost money because his large canopy was destroyed. It happens and yet that vendor keeps coming back for more, lol

It is a great event and there are some real finds at the Saturday blanket sales. We are at the Mayo clinic the next few days or we would be there. Although we do get to visit the Footed Shaft this morning.

From: mgerard Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 14-Jun-17

Hope things go well at Mayo Jon. I was there the year the BIG vendor tent went down. I helped several vendors gather and secure their merchandise. I was also there the year some smaller vendors tents and canopy went airborne, along with some camping tents. Anyone who scoffs at the possible severity of the storms in that area is uninformed. There is not much shelter available when those storms hit. I'm just trying to help members be informed. I hope all have a great time and are safe.

From: Ollie Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 14-Jun-17

It just isn't Comptons if you don't have a big storm roll in and blow over some tents at least once during the weekend!

From: Fall Gray
Date: 14-Jun-17

Weather forecast has been for rain the past three days. I have not seen a drop yet. I am about 100 miles North of Compton.

From: tradarcherychamp
Date: 14-Jun-17

I spend my time and money to travel to shoots because it is my hobby that I take pleasure in. I do not take pleasure in getting wet, muddy, miserable and cold. If I were hunting to feed my family and had no other options, then ok. I would do that. But this is supposed to be fun, not an endurance test, and I am no less of an archer or a person for not wishing to drive 800 miles to be rained on.

From: mgerard Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 14-Jun-17

Exactly Julia. AND it only seems fair that you hear about and research the weather forecast. Mark, we've had rain the last 2 days, heavy but short deluge today, with more "predicted" for this afternoon/evening. Hopefully the weather stays safe in Berrien Springs, the course isn't muddy, and the skeeters are big enough or numerous enough to carry small archers away:>)

From: THarris
Date: 14-Jun-17

Holy cow, it seems we've all got opinions about the weather, BUT, it seems there are those that certainly wear their feelings on their sleeve.

I don't think anyone here was seriously attacking anyone for not going to an event just because of weather.

I have also not gone to archery events before because of weather forecasts, that's just part of it.....CHILL OUT!!!

So you left because you were afraid of the storms forecast tonight? :>)

From: THarris
Date: 18-Jun-17

Just got back from the Compton Rendezvous, and Ron LaClair was right. The weather was great compared to what was first reported that was SUPPOSED to be.

In my opinion, if someone doesn't plan on going to an event because of their fear of weather or anything for that matter, why try and ruin it for everyone else....JUST DON'T GO AND LEAVE IT AT THAT.

Well my ring finger is numb, so we must have thrown enough arrows. Excellent time and nice muggy hot weather. The board at Comptons put on another great event, a lot of hard work goes into it. Thanks again for making me proud to be a compton member! Herb

From: mgerard Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

I wish vendors would be as concerned about others safety as they are about filling their pockets. Providing local forecast certainly doesn't "ruin it for everybody else". I'm sure attendance was good enough for everybody to be happy, and a few posts here didn't significantly affect the bottom line for Compton, BSCC, or the vendors.

From: Gvdocholiday
Date: 18-Jun-17

They said Friday night before Neils presentation that they had more campers Thursday night than all of last year. The wife and I have already written it in stone...as long as it continues to remain in Michigan or neighboring state, we will make it every year. Our 5yo had an amazing time...got crabby a couple of times from the heat and did freak out during the Friday early morning thunderstorm(we stayed bone dry but it was alot of thunder and lightning), but other than that, she walked the courses with us nearly a half dozen times taking her shots and made me drop a few GW's at the aerial range.

Once I figure out how to post several pics in a single post from photobucket, I'll be sharing our weekend.

From: THarris
Date: 18-Jun-17

Nothing wrong with capitalism, after all, they are the ones taking the risks of either making ends meet or not. Those that host the Compton Rendezvous will put it on whether or not anyone shows up to or not, the show must go on.

Only we as archers or the vendors have the luxury of deciding whether or not to attend, those that host these event don't have that luxury.

All I'm saying is that those who put on these events don't need the help of the nay- sayers that don't want to attend for their personal reasons, again...JUST DON'T GO!

The weekend was great fun. Yes the weather was always a question, but never stopped us.. Awesome shooting courses. The event was well organized. It was great to see so many families there. So many things to do, and see, not enough time in the day. So we stretched the day into long evening guitar picking and sing'n sessions around a camp fire. Not before consuming a couple of venison steaks cooked up over the camp fire Compton Folks, thank you again! Dave, Tracker7

We were there Thursday thru Sunday and I thought the weather was just fine! It sure beat the weather back in Southern Illinois.

Had a wonderful time and really enjoyed seeing everyone again! Sure missed those who didn't come.
