To get a 600 spine carbon arrow to fly perfectly I need to leave it full length, 30.5". I only draw 27" so that leaves 3 1/2" in front of the bow. Is there a point that is too much extra length? I can cut them shorter but then I would need to load a lot of extra weight up front.

I cut mine down and wish I had them longer. Just my thought, in a hunting situation I like keeping the broadhead a few inches from my hand of possible.

If they fly perfectly, then you've answered your question.

The only real issue is having enough weight up front to balance. I'm not talking about 'high foc'....just enough foc :)

I shot cloverdale this weekend with full length 600 trads, standard insert, 100 grain tip.
Thats what spined for my bow and came out 9gpp exactly. I can tell you that was "enough" foc for sure.

I draw about 27.5 and don't cut carbons at all. (Unless I damage the front!) They 'like' to be long. It's easy to shorten them too much, easier to put the cutter away ;-)

Thanks for the help. They do fly perfectly full length. It just looks a bit odd having that much extra arrow. I am used to aluminums that are cut one inch more then my draw length.

With carbon arrows they don't come in as many different spines as wood or aluminum. With carbons you adjust the spine by the length or front end weight. With carbons length doesn't matter as long as they are well tuned to my bow.You just have to get past the old school of that arrow is too long for my bow.Carbon arrows are a new learning curve when compared to wood or aluminum.

Do you aim using the shaft and point?

To say it's perfect only applies to what you think, not any of us. To me it's not perfect for a 27" draw. It's wasted length, but if you like it that way...then there is no need to pursue it further. If you are not happy with it, then you need to change it. For every inch you cut off, you are adding about 5# spine to that arrow. Act accordingly. There's pluses and minuses in everything we do.

Yes I do aim using the shaft for alignment at closer distances and then when I hit my point on distance then I just put the tip of the arrow on the spot. You are right George there are always trade offs. I like the lighter total weight of the arrow with them full length. If I cut them down I will need to add another 100 grns. to the tip to make them fly as good.
