Headed out to the woodshed a couple days ago and just about stepped on this little fellow. He was curled up on the doorstep and I wasn't paying attention. I never expected to see one in the yard! He had likely been born that day as he was very unsteady on his legs as he ran off (he didn't go very far). I found him in the grass and took the attached photo.

He stayed in that spot for several days, but last night his mother decided it was time to take him out into the wide world. My family watched as mom nursed him, bathed him, and then off they went. He was checking everything out in his new world. Mom would wait and he would go running back to her. It was enjoyable to watch!

I know that someday he and I may meet again under different circumstances, but until then I wish him only well!

I really enjoy watching most all wildlife babies. Thanks.

Perfect size for the crock-pot! ..."oh no he didn't." Kidding aside, it's cool to be in the woods in spring, and jump a doe that just circles you. Many times she has one of those nipple monsters hiding somewhere.

Great story and opportunity for you and your family. I'll bet if you saw him in three years you'd give him a pass.

Great story. The non-hunting public needs to know how much the hunting public cares about wildlife. Stories like that go a long way towards making that happen. Matthew

My english cocker dug out 3 baby groundhogs, eyes still close, that were under the cabin, she just laid them out on the grass and watch them. I couldn't kill them and put them in the other new hole on the other side of the cabin and where gone a few hours latter, knowing that they will be a pain when bigger. It is ironic how we can look in aw at newborns and put a hole in them when adults.

I occasionally get to see very young deer but mostly enjoy watching new born calves. I especially enjoy it when they are three or four weeks old and will run and buck just for the joy of being alive. I'm glad that you were treated to seeing the fawn. That is a fairly rare thing to get to see up close.
