Hi All,

Having problems with arrows fishtailing.

Im new to the traditional side of things. I bought my kids a 25#, 54" Cabelas Ranger model recurve to shoot for fun. They have both been shooting compounds for about 4 years. One of my kids is about 4' 10" tall and the other is about 5' 10". I have 29" arrows that weigh 7.3 gpi, rated for 45/60 with 100 gr field points. When my younger son shoots the arrows fly true from what I can tell, but when my older son shoots the arrows fishtail about 10 yards down range and make contact with the target with the vanes to the right of the arrow. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Even with the "relatively heavy" points, the shafts are too stiff for that bow. Need to get something in the .700, .800 deflection range. Three Rivers and other mail order shops carry them.

There's also the chance that your brace height has dropped too low. Might try raising it by twisting the string tighter. May need to raise it as much as 1/2 to one inch. Difficult to say, not knowing what it is now.

Personally, I would head over to the nearest sporting goods store or even one of the "marts" and pick up some fiberglass camp arrows. Get them about 6 each and turn them loose. Let them shoot for a while and enjoy just seeing arrows fly. How they fly, and how they impact in the target doesn't make a bit of difference at this point.

It PROBABLY is the arrows as Orion indicated, (99.8% chance) but right now that doens't matter at all.

Do you suppose it has anything to do with one kid a foot taller? Perhaps there is a big difference in draw length which will change draw weight, which will affect spine?

Those are super overspined. As said .700 spine. Leave them long. Heavier points if necessary.

Also, you said "vanes". If they are vanes, you will not get good arrow flight. I'm not familiar with the bow and what kind of rest is on it. Feathers are better.
