Has anyone written a book specifically on building and shooting arrows? There are short pieces on the subject in other archery books, but Im wondering about a complete arrow book.

Depending on what kind of arrows...James Duff's book, "Bows and Arrows" is cool, though he did almost all hand work and the book was written in the 1920s, I think.

I don't know of a book with the only subject being arrows.

Liquid Amber would know.

There is no book I'm aware of written specifically about making arrows. My friend Dave Doren of Archery Past has been working on one for years, but his health is such now I doubt he will finish it.

Depends on your definition of "book."

A number of books contain chapters on arrow making and several on bow and arrow making.

Doug Kittredge published a 16 page pamphlet titled "How to Make Arrows" in 1960 and second edition in 1966. Pretty comprehensive, spine charts on wood, aluminum and Micro-flits, discussion on spine and about all the information needed. I purchased 50 of the 1966 edition from Kittredge back in the mid 1980s for a quarter a piece. I gave them all away over the years with the exception of the one I'm looking at know.

Actually, it is not very hard and many threads of us "old" guys descibe what to do. But if you want a book to get you started, winds of change does a good job covering it, as well as, sam fadala traditional archery.

Are You talking about building arrows from scratch like the SHOOTS to SHAFTS deal by FRISKY? Or maybe taking "square stock" and turning it into arrow shafts?? Give us a hint??

Hey Liquid Amber, still have my pamphlet I got back in early 70's with arrow making kit, shafts pepainted, feathers, nocks, points. If I remember the whole kit was less than $20.

Sounds like there are a few decent books. I specially like reading the vintage stuff. I'll be looking for that pamphlet with Doug Kittredge.

Kodiaktd, if you like "reading vintage stuff" don't overlook James Duff's "Bows and Arrows." To me, it was worth the read just for its fascinating peek into the thoughts of a 1920 bowyer and fletcher.

Thanks Jim. I'll check it out.

The Complete Archery Book by Louis Hochman, 1957, paperback edition. Notice the cover photo of Howard Hill has him shooting left handed. It probably looked better with him facing that way, so they flipped the photo.

This is not exactly what N.Y. Yankee was looking for, but it does have a chapter on arrow making. Also there are chapters on bow making and string making. Many of the photos were taken at my friend Hugh Rich's archery shop in Glendale, CA. Great source of information if you like the old way of doing things.

If anyone is interested please pm me.

"The Dowel Arrow Handbook" by Nicholas Tomihama, he also goes by Backyard Bowyer, covers making arrows from dowels, whether you buy them from the big box stores or from an archery supply. Includes selecting, straightening, fletching, knocks, making a variety of arrow heads etc...

One of the better books on making arrows from scratch is Jim Hamm's "Bows and Arrows of the Native Americans".

The book "Bow Accessories" printed by the European guys has extensive information on traditional arrow construction.
