I ran across a garage sale on my way home from dropping one of the boys at school this morning… There's a 2 1/2 inch belt sander there and I wondered if I could use it with my taper jig to do nock and point tapers?

I have one of those $12 plywood taper blocks from Kustom King or 3R.... I know the woodchuck paper towel runs off of a larger disk, but it made me curious as to whether a little belt sander would work?

No reason why it will not work. Depending on how long the platen it you might even be able to taper the shaft also.

I have used a belt sander to taper nock and point tapers on a shaft, and even tapered a few full length. It works well. Go for it.

I bought a belt disk combo type sander from Harbor freight and made a simple jig for tapering and it works great. I got back into woodies and It makes prefect point and nock tapers ever time and cut the effort way down time wise. Will post pic if you like @ work now.

I have the same block and it doesn't work very well on a Rigid type belt sander. If you feed into the direction of the belt. It wants to push back. Fed with the direction it wants to pull the taper into the jig. Either way it's not a very clean even taper.

I don't have a disk sander but did rig one up on a table saw and IMO the disk is the way to go. I don't use it anymore because it's a pain to set up. Just went to a Tru Taper V2 and am happy with it.

But, by all means go buy the belt sander. Who knows what fun projects it will lead you to.

I made a block like that and put a oak runner on the bottom to fit the miter slot in the sander. I have a lot better luck on the disc sander. Also found a stop helped a lot to keep all the tapers the same. How were you using the block? >>>------> Ken

Here is the unit that I got works great for me

I built one for my belt / disk sander to do shaft tapers i have blocks for the drill press to do my point and nock tapers .sanding /grinding is much better than cutting inmho

I use this simple jig for 9" arrow tapers on my belt sander. I have a 36 grit belt on the sander in the picture but use a 180 or 220 grit belt when I am actually doing tapers and not taking pictures. I did a few on the 36 grit belt but couldn't get rid of all the sanding marks on the shafts.

It takes a few holes in the jig to get the taper just right, I go to a little less than 5/16" on the nock end mostly by tapering and checking and maybe tapering a little more.

I use this jig for nock and point tapers. I have a piece of wood on the underside that fits in the miter slot on the sanding table so I cam take the jig off and put it back on with perfect alignment every time.

I could do it either way but I tend to taper the nock, taper the shaft, complete the arrow, cut to length and point taper.

You should be able to make a jig. Mine rides o the fence. I only use its to cut point tapers since I do self nocks..

Well, it looks like the joke is on me! Five bucks later, I come to find out that my local Homer store doesn't carry 2 1/2" belts, nor 3" in anything approaching the correct length. Don't know if anybody still makes them in the right size, but hey, maybe I at least got a good little motor out of the deal! LOL

Let the improvisation begin!

GF: You can buy them on line from numerous suppliers. What width belt do you need. distance between drums?
