It seems that the self bows folks get a little left out at the IBO World, not sure why but just seems that way to me. I am a self bow guy and since the IBO World is at Twin Oaks a few of us had decided to make that different this year. We will have the top 10 scores for Self Bow off of the Hunter Challenge course have a shoot down, 5 targets head to head, last person standing wins. We will pay out the top 3 places.$500.00 for the winner/$300.00 for 2nd and $200.00 for 3rd.It will be sponsored by Arvin Weaver self bows/CD Archery [Calvin and Dwyane]and Twin Oaks bowhunters. We have had a good turn out from the self bow world over the last few years we have done the World but hope to have a really big turn out this year, so if you are one of the self bow folks come out and support this. Pappy, its great to see the self bow class growing. I shot in the 1st IBO world and got 2nd place in the primitive class. In the finals I was the only one shooting a self bow because you were allowed to use bamboo backed bows. Nice to see the self bow making a comeback.

Yes Will it is a true self bow class now, nothing on the back that will enhance performance or durability. Snake skins are allowed but that is about it.Ron I doubt Jimmy will be competing and if so I doubt it will be in the self bow class, although there will be some very very good shots that I am sure will be there. Steve it is usually about the same number of shooters, just different, it is like 2 shoots in one event, we have a lot more that shoot the Hunter Challenge side of the event which is like the TN.Classic set up, usually about half will shoot the IBO side of the event and I think last year it was something over 200 for the IBO and around 400 for the Hunter Challenge. The Hunter Challenge is separate and has it's own set of awards.Love to have you back someday Steve, you know there is always a bed for you in the Cabin even though you don't sleep much. You can shoot it in the Hunter Challenge and if you score is in the top 10 which you probably would be the way you shoot, you are in. You do have to do it on your first round. Pappy

I could never figure out why there is no selfbow class in the Olympics. That is what they shot in the original Olympics so why isn't there one now?

Why do twice as many shoot the HC vs the IBO course? Is it the money?

I have enormous respect for all those who set up and run these tournaments and I'm looking forward to participating some day.

Someday I would like to see a Pope, Young and Ishi class because they would not be able to use their bows under these present day regulations. Ishi taught Pope and Young to use clarified rawhide backing to protect the sapwood back of the bow. It does not improve accuracy or speed. It only protects the bow. I know from experience and consultation with bowyers. I have an English longbow carved from Cascade yew by Don Adams. No rawhide backing. I also have an equivalent bow carved from Cascade yew by Gerry Welch. They are the same poundage and same speed and I can miss with either one.

Just my two cents recommendation for future thaught.

I understand Robert. but you have to draw the line somewhere when it comes to backing, if you allow one kind of backing then everyone wants to know and tries to explain why what the one they used is no different. I work and lobbied hard to get a true self bow Class in the IBO World, which is self backed. Pappy

Ken Not sure if it is the money or they just feel intimidated by the IBO and of course some just want to come and shoot for fun, they don't realize the IBO courses are fun also, we set the IBO courses also and set them so everyone can have fun, the best shooters will always come to the top. They don't have to be set so long that they aren't fun for most to shoot. At least that is my take on it. Pappy

Pappy - I get your point. You did a great job getting a selfbow class set up.

I agree with Pappy since it's fair to say that sinew and bamboo as backings do add performance. Baby steps. Who knows what it will look like in another decade in that category. Some of you guys could read up on Erwin Pletcher, who used a self yew bow to win the Nationals three different times. The bows are plenty powerful enough when treated properly.

Yes I wish more people would shoot the IBO side < not often you get to shoot 40 brand new targets at a shoot for the money spent. and no one said you have to turn in your card. All and All this is still just a fun place to be !! The shoot downs are a very fun thing to watch or be in. This shoot is more like the Classic than a regular IBO shoot, so come check it out you will not be sorry you did !! Just Sayin Cal
