How far do you tapper a shaft from 11/32 to 5/16? What is your favorite finish on cedar shafts.

I put about a 9-inch taper on my 11/32s down to 5/16. Have been using Minwax stains and Bohning lacquers. Bohning is a tough, hard finish, but the fumes are causing me to look for another product.

Depends on the profile I'm looking for on the finished shaft, and whether I am or not using the taper to match weight within a set.
Sometimes it's full length. 11/32 on the point end and 5/6 on the nock.
Other times, it's just the nock end. And, as previously noted, the length of that taper is decided by whether I am matching weight.
Occassionally, I have tapered both ends to 5/16 in either a "breated", or barrelled" configuration.
One of the most overlooked options is tapering am 11/32 arrow to 5/16 on the point end and 9/32 on the nock end.

I barrel taper my shafts. Point end is 5/16, body is 23/64, and the nock end is 9/32.

Following Hill's instructions, I tried barrel tapering some 23/64s and then fletching them like he wrote except I used thread instead pins. They flew like drunk bumble bees having a party. When I thread fletched some 11/32 70-75 without messing with them, I had the best flying wood arrows that I ever had, so it must have been my barrel tapering that was way off.
